I had them in my basement several years ago. They worked ok because i had low ceilings. I finally installed ceiling speakers and it was a big difference.

I would love to see a video experimenting with placement of up-firing speakers. I can place mine at ear level or above ear level and curious what would be the best spot. It would be interesting to see how far the seats are vs how high your ceilings are vs the angle of the speaker baffle . I think it could be helpful or a lot of people since most RU-vid audio guys dismiss them entirely.

I've done some experiments of upfiring speakers on my @joentell channel.

The science of sound reflection is...sound so you can't say they are snake oil. They just require optimized use cases as was mentioned. Everyone got/gets caught up in the fact that when they used them or heard them they were underwhelming, but that's not really due to the speaker's faults from a concept perspective.

Hey Gents... I have done both upfiring and heights. Upfiring I've found leans more towards unlocateably diffuse, yet still heavens based aura, whereas heights are more locked-in to a point but less atmospherically capable. BOTH are capable , but can't do everything well in one unit physically... I have found. There is no right or wrong, just different. 🤓👍

This is exactly my finding. And I argue for sounds coming from above, more difuse is better. In the atmos guide they even say: Dolby Atmos enabled speakers produce a slightly more diffuse overhead audio experience that is quite lifelike and, in some cases, may be preferable to the sound that originates from overhead speakers

I currently have up firing atmos speakers - due to height limitations. I am not impressed.

You never will be with up firing they are so crap and theres not much that comes out of atmos in most movies as it is so ditch the upfiring put some speakers up its night and day different

@@Mattyboy88979 I would not recommend them based on my current setup- which by the way is calibrated as well and still doesn’t sound great.

Like they say it doesn't work in every room, I think they work best in smaller rooms and also it's a science to make them work, I also want to say that you cannot use regular bookshelf speakers for the bouncy effect, Dolby only lets certain speakers be used as bouncy speakers and as far as Towers with built in bouncy speakers Dolby only allows 2 that I know of and that's Focal and Klipsch, My Klipsch RP 280FAs didn't work to my standards in my ManCave Multimedia Gaming Room as well as I would have liked but once I put them in my bedroom it was Height Channel Heaven, Also I would like to add that when you place height speakers over top of your towers that they are going to sound like they over your towers and they will not give you overhead effects unless you are close to the screen where you can look up and see them, In ceiling or speakers mounted on the ceiling over your head is the best.

I had some sony upfiring atmos speakers that literally gave almost no sound/effect. I currently have 4 Klipsch upfiring speakers and while not mind blowing, they do give a overhead effect. So I think its better than nothing.

I have the Monolith 365T and 265B and have tried them in two different spaces (one 7’ flat ceiling and one 8’ popcorn ceiling) and what I experienced was at best about a 30-40% of what actual speakers (what I have now) in those locations deliver. I totally wanted them to work well to not have to buy and mount additional speakers, but they were not convincing…once again, in my experience.

Joe here. That's interesting. I've never tried others except for these Pioneers and some horrible Onkyo ones I had back in the day. I would say the Pioneer ones provide maybe 70% of the experience I get with actual height speakers. It might just be that the 2khz dip on these really sells the effect, or my room layout is more condusive to upfiring speakers.
@DustinFrancis

@@DailyHiFi That’s why I love that you made sure to say that you are just speaking from your experience and I was just trying to give perspective from my experience. I definitely think they are worth it when it’s your only option, but I also understand to a certain degree the “bouncy house speaker” hate.

I don't like the atmos models but the ones that are built in the main speaker's that block the line of sight of the drivers it works very well. I've got the klipsch rp-280fa and am very impressed with the sound of atmos . But have tried the models before and didn't work at all for me .the sound never got any higher then the tv.

I actually ceiling mounted the AJ Pioneer Atmos speakers above and just ahead of MLP. Despite the 1/2 inch tweeter and high crossover, they work excellent mounted since they are already wedge like and are angled toward the MLP.
@trauma50disaster1
@trauma50disaster1 9 месяцев назад
I thought of doing the same and when reading some details from manufactures i read "do not use as regular speakers, they will be damaged." I wonder what the deal with that is? I wonder if only certain frequencies are made to go to the upfiring? weird
@joelgonzalez8289
@joelgonzalez8289 9 месяцев назад
Any speaker can be used as height or atmos. The problem with these is that they don't go as low as the the other speakers I think they only go down to about 180hz, so I cross them over around there. Also, per @joentell there is something funky around 2k hz...where the response isn't as linear bit I think they do very well for what it's worth.
@trauma50disaster1
@trauma50disaster1 9 месяцев назад
@@joelgonzalez8289 I mean that is nice hearsay, problem is when the manufacturer puts in these warnings as I mentioned above. Then what does a novice do? Helll with the manufacturer or some guy? See below from the manual... "Note: The DA4.2 speakers are specifically designed for use as Dolby Atmos enabled speakers. They cannot be used as traditional speakers; doing so will damage the speakers."
@blue13x

It's interesting how some reviewers are quick to dismiss upfiring speakers. The upfiring speakers can actually add a more diffuse sound that adds to the scale. Tried the helicopter demo on the atmos disc and I could clearly hear the heli circle around and go from front to back, so you can still pinpoint the sound but a bit more diffuse. I argue that with in-ceiling, it will actually break the illusion sound like its coming from a ceiling. The atmos guide from dolby supports this more diffuse sound and considers it in some cases better: Dolby Atmos enabled speakers produce a slightly more diffuse overhead audio experience that is quite lifelike and, in some cases, may be preferable to the sound that originates from overhead speakers
@mivanp2185
@mivanp2185 6 месяцев назад
Its a interesting discussion because I also hate when the sound is too localised like rears can be . And had to change the height of them so they would sound better fpr everyone. So the fact they are not pointing directly might be of benefit.
@stingber
@stingber 9 месяцев назад
Try using mirrors in the ceiling and then pin point it to the MLP 👍
@joentell
@joentell 9 месяцев назад
That's what I used to think also. I thought you had to bounce the sound to your MLP as if you were playing billiards. I no longer think that. It seems that the goal is to just add a height effect layer above the corresponding speaker. Where the sound hits the ceiling becomes the perceived source of sound. The off axis sound from the "pseudo height speaker" will still get to the MLP.

@MrNorcal81
@MrNorcal81 9 месяцев назад
@@joentell Yeah, those up-firing speakers need a solid flat and, ideally, a glossy painted ceiling to bounce their sound off of but even with that, most of them aren't very good.

@@joentell Let see: The Pioneer Sp-T22As and the NHT Atmos Mini Add-On Module Speakers (N-AFX Mini). There may have been another set but I can't recall. While the Dolby modules added some immersion, my textured ceiling was likely an inhibiting factor so maybe that needs to be taken into account. I now have 4 SVS Prime Elevations mounted as front and rear heights and, even though the overhead effects are discrete, the front/back panning is very good and the immersive sound bubble is okay. And of course for Auro-3D up-mixing, they are very good.

how do they look ugly, mines are built in, you would not even know i have upfiring unless i told you what they were or that they are their. From the couch, you can't see it. I've done tests already, turned off my side surrounds, and rear surrounds, asked the wife, where is the sound coming from watching ready player one. It was only the front LCR and upfiring. She kept thinking it was the side surrounds which i have elevated on the wall, my side surround are rp-500SA
