I used a vertical monitor to the side in my previous job but it wasn’t one I actively used much. I would have all my monitoring tools open on it so I could check system health at a quick glance. The vertical orientation worked best here as it saved space on the desk and it was easier to look up/down rather than left/right.

It depends on how you work. Say you're viewing a video tutorial. Video at the top with a chunk of comments you might be interested in below it, note taking at the bottom, and IDE the tutorial is about on the main monitor. If you're a fast reader, you tend to read rather than watch learning material, and for reading vertical is hard to beat.

Thanks your video helped a lot. I'm a programmer too. I'm changing my two 24" side-by-side monitors setup for a 29" WideScreen and as I'm keeping one of the 24" monitors, considering setting the 24" as vertical. But stacked makes more sense now.

Four 24" monitors; Two stack on each other horizontally; one on the left horizontal next to bottom one that's stacked. One on the right vertically: Three horizontals great for video editing; center for workspace, top for continues preview, and left for editing tools. Right vertical for reading documents, coding, webpages and social media. The setup greatly improved my workflow.

One file with hundreds or thousands amount of code lines is perfectly fine in the past it was told that every file should have a limited number of line but what's more important is the organization of the single file and not how to split it multiple files it can also be organized in a single file and it also has its benefits

I agree: I tried using a second vertical HD display for documentation and Slack, and it was okay but not worth the fuss. I recently moved (ascended?) from a 27” iMac to a 34” ultrawide, and while I *really* miss the visual quality of the Retina display, I also *really* like a wider display and will probably move up to a 49” at some point. For documentation, I tend to use an iPad about half the time: easier to read and rotate, portable, etc. Really enjoying your videos, BTW, thanks!

I have three monitors on my desk. Two vertical and the center is landscape. All 1080p. I’ve noticed two things from the setup. 1) anything on the vertical monitors that is below the bottom edge of the landscape one, I ignore. 2) I favor the left vertical over the right one but still keep most of what I’m doing on the center landscape one.

You touched on an interesting topic; what is your main trigger for a code refactor? Is it generally the line count or more so when a single file starts to cover more than one purpose? I generally try to group my files by a specific purpose or concern, but I've got one or two on my current project that are approaching 900+ lines.
@AivarsMeijers
@AivarsMeijers 2 года назад
I'm looking more into logical structure and not lines of code, but generally I tire to have: - one class per file - if class has more than 10 methods, most likely it is too big - if method doesn't fit two screens (100+ lines) something is wrong with it
@totheknee
@totheknee Год назад
It should be based on how hard it is to maintain. Don't worry about line count. If you use object oriented techniques, your code will be harder to maintain and understand. Don't worry about line count. If you use design patterns, your code will bloat and be harder to maintain. Don't worry about line count. Worry about modern "engineering" fads that are destroying software.

what size do most people use for vertical monitors? I haven't seen a 32 inch yet
@freefaler
@freefaler Год назад
I think vertical works great for programming, because when you read a long function the space you need to see the whole function can help you out with comprehension a lot. Also reading documentation on a big screen helps that you can see the definition and help at the same monitor and not goo to a wide one. Reading science papers that are formated for A4/letter is also much easier when you have enough vertical resolution. I'd love to buy a 6000 x 3000 px resolution monitor, but alas nothing like that is available.

I just set up my 2 16:9 monitors in a 1vertical 1horizontal setup. ... it's not about reading more code vertically ... it's about not creating a whiplash having these 2 monitors in a horizontal setup (which I've had for +10 years). ... and so reducing horizontal movement of your head and eyes. I'm glad I've discovered the 1v + 1h ... now I finally have a center screen again. Of course... a 1x 21:9 or wider monitor is probably better ... but at the moment don't want to pay for one. Also the use of fancy-zones is crucial to me ... I've got many overlapping zones derived from the default 16:9 and 4:3 ratio's. ... very handy Thanks for the video!

In your situation the monitor does not make sense because you also need to see the rendered app on the screen but for people who work in bacend developement this wouldnt be a problem and 1.5x or 2x the amount of lines would minimize a lot of scrolling.
