I never agreed with the idea that western is a dead genre. It certainly slowed down compared to its golden age, but compared to some other genres such as musicals, or slapstik comedies, it always stood tall in my eyes. Even the 80s gave us such gems as Pale Rider and Lonesome Dove.

If people on this video are hungry for westerns watch The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” it’s super underrated and really beautiful to look at

1:23 - Ah, just as I remember it from the good old days 1:55 - Good meme 2:05 - Why the Western Genre Perished**** 3:30 - Roses of the West 2??? 3:48 - He got a HANDFUL of cake 4:55 - Always appreciate a Pitbull reference 5:08 - I feel like the stories in "Ballad of Buster Scruggs” did a good job staying grounded in the traditional sense of the Western Genre even with heavy satire and that it wasn’t shooting for “blockbuster” status. 5:48 - Can we get back to Westerns please? 7:02 - If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it 7:28 - If someone could nail a Breaking Bad level Western, that’d be money 7:53 - Why is Marty Robbins not playing in the background? 9:15 - Breaking Bad mixes Westerns and Drug abuse 9:17 - Bass BOOSTED 10:52 - Confuse the snowflakes 12:34 - lol, Brooke and I were just talking about Wind River yesterday 13:30 - WhaaAaAt?? Not positive? No Way! 13:38 - HANDSOME 14:34 - Powerful scene 14:57 - His most notable role 16:38 - No Pitbull reference? 17:25 - Superhero energy > Historical Accuracy 17:57 - This got me boppin’ 18:24 - YESSSSS 18:44 - Amen brother 19:12 - Based and Red Pilled 19:31 - Chameleon*** This is very important distinction since Rango’s ability to change colors reflects his ability to change his personality in order to blend into his environment 21:11 - It’s a beautiful thing 22:44 - Meta meme 24:13 - GAMERS UNITE 24:48 - Missed opportunity to show some S tier RDR2 memes 25:50 - I feel like this point encompasses “Ballad of Buster Scruggs” as well. 26:34 - **Forgotten Media starts sweating*** 26:50 - Took 26 minutes to say IDK? Blasphemy. 8/10. Great video, but taking off two points for blatantly disregarding “Ballad of Buster Scruggs”

I totally missed an opportunity to drop another Pitbull reference. That's on me and I'm ashamed. You're right about Buster Scruggs. It keeps the important spirit of westerns but manages to infuse enough humor to make the genre feel alive and different. I think people are pretty open to that type of western in ways they aren't open to things like "The Magnificent Seven," because it's not "a normal western." Same wit RDR2. It's similar to normies who don't like fantasy watching GoT because "it's not normal fantasy." I should have covered Buster Scruggs in the video and there's no good reason I didn't. 😥 Also, HANDSOME 💙 was exactly what was on my mind when I mentioned Chris Pine Thank you for the attentive watch and feedback, Dave. You are the number one Book and Movie Guy fan today.

Honestly I loved the 2016 Magnificent 7. To me, saying hollywood blockbuster action doesnt work in a Western just isnt true. Look at Westerns like Big Jake, The Sons of Katie Elder, True Grit, Rooster Cogburn, Tombstone, Django Unchained... These are all great examples of successful, blood-pumping, hollywood action-packed movies. Of course you have neo westerns as well, such as Sicario, Hell or High Water, Wind River, No Country for Old Men, and even Logan. As far as a Western cannot survive as a franchise, you have the Dollars trilogy, which consists of A Fistful of Dollars; For a Few Dollars More; and the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. I dont think the issue is that the Western can't survive a franchise or high action. I think the issue is the story and the characters. Unlike old Westerns, modern takes on Westerns give us a rugged, broken protagonist who is pushed to the edge of what they consider right due to the circumstances they're faced with. Sometimes, they're driven to crime, such as in Hell or High Water. Sometimes, they're driven to do terrible things in the name of the law, such as in Sicario. To put it simply, they're anti-heroes. From Robinhood archetypes to Man with No Name archetypes, they're usually antiheroes pushed to the brink and forced to make a choice they normally wouldnt make.

Westerns will never truly be gone. The frontier and cowboy spirit is essential to the American story. Westerns have gone through and will continue to go through tremendous change. But that core frontier and cowboy spirit will remain. One change we should expect to see more of is a variety of perspectives and a more nuanced understanding of Western cultures and personally I welcome it.

I think Quentin Tarantino's movies are quite overrated. If you actually watch movies that inspired his movies, you'll realize that his films are just pastiches. They're movies about movies, without much to say about life. And for the record, I actually like the original Django better than Django Unchained. It's more focused. And The Hateful Eight is just a retread of Reservoir Dogs, which itself was a horribly overrated film with far too much trust in its own gimmick.

for some they never left , an odd funny sci fi movie with dullard Patrick Swayze it took place on some planet and a bleak future but the bottom line is that it was a RIP off of the old western hondo

Heavens Gate was just a bad movie. Good ones since are Lonesome Dove, Dances with Wolves, 1883, 1923, and Tombstone
