This video essay explores some of the criticisms around the 2022 Netflix film "Blonde," directed by Andrew Dominik. "Blonde" is a pretty mid film, all things considered, but many people felt it was the worst movie since the last worst movie. I talk a little about the positives and negatives of the film, where a lot of criticisms of the Monroe flick come from, and what the purpose of film criticism actually is. I make some comparisons to other movies like "Silence of the Lambs," discuss the male gaze, critical theory, and, uh, other things.
In other words, I spend 30 minutes pretending I know what I'm talking about or that anyone is interested,

It was a very interesting reflexions you give us in this video ! I agree to say that short content destroys thoughtful criticism, and this is why we have to continue our longer videos ! It was interesting to see how the cultural difference between our country let us think a little bit different about Blonde. In France, the movie was accepted by the most of the audience (but not considered as a masterpiece), and the press gave very positive feedback on the film. Peoples who don't like the movie said that its a trying and tiring experience which "wash your mind", and yeah, some of peoples don't like what the movie does to Marylin and her image it was show here. Personally, I agree that we not have to "react" in critics and we have to wait and rest the movie in our mind. When I watch Blonde, I loved the music, the shoots and the message given, but I though that it was a very trying ambiance. So I rote 2,5/5 the movie, and after weeks and months, I was always thinking about Blonde and I re-estimate the movie in my mind. I rote 3/5 and finally 3,5/5 the movie. So its an example that "time-attack criticism" isn't relevant at all.

That's fascinating to hear. I hadn't considered how it might be viewed differently in another country, and I think it's interesting French audiences were more so tired by the film than upset by it like American audiences. I also like your point about letting the film settle before coming to a solid conclusion. I've had to do with a lot of films, and think you've touched on an important part of criticism. What elicits a strong emotional reaction may not necessarily have staying power, for good or bad. I'm thinking especially of a lot of blockbusters that rely on nostalgia of some kind to conjure up emotions on a first viewing, but consequently don't hold up on a second or third. Thank you so much for watching and for your comment. I'm glad you found the video thought provoking!

13:30 This is like the actual definition of separating the art from the creator. Or in this case the artwork from the person it’s depicting which you can only do when the creator is dead and can neither benefit, profit from nor be disadvantaged by our consumption.

agreed 100%. I think the phenomenon you highlight here , is partly responsible for the quality of present-day films, in North America at least.
