Randy sir you should write a book about reloading. I’d for sure buy one. I’m not to old to learn stuff. Sir you have forgotten more than most of us listening to you will ever know. Be safe and GOD BLESS y’all Amen 🙏

@dalegerbec7301 how many and what brand I have a few thousand kicking around I may never use LOL,,, just had to rub it in LOL,,, I know I'm just being an A**,,, but seriously if I knew ya I would gladly set you up with enough to hold ya for at least a little while because I do have a bunch and I don't nor do I plan to ever have anything to use them in,,, thanks to a really messed up right shoulder and lack of desire to hunt I had to give up shooting anything bigger than my AR or 9mm PCC (pistol caliber carbine), tried shooting my Henry's 44 magnum lever gun a few month's ago and the three shots I took each and every one felt like a knife being driven into my right shoulder,, and for about 4 days after my entire right shoulder and neck and even down into my ribcage on that side was killing me ,,, so all my long guns bigger than the AR or 9mm PCC are gone,, even the arthrits crap in my hands and wrists is bad enough that anything bigger than my 9mm handguns bothers them,, so not even my collection of 44 magnum or 357 magnum handguns get much use anymore,, I need both shoulders completely replaced because they are basically completely FUBAR, but the doctors I see are affraid to put me under to do the surgeries to replace them because of a scare a couple years ago of not wanting to come out of general anesthesia for a much simpler proceedure I had done,,,so now it is on my records that I'm a code blue risk to put under,,, doesn't help that I have C.O.P.D. and am in stage 3 kidney failure,,, so the shoulders are most likely here to stay,, even if they replace them when I asked the Dr about shooting he just said only if I want the replacements F"ed up again and no longer being able to fix it so I even have arms that work at all.,, anyhow if you are desperate for primers try an outfit called Pacific Northwest Munitions they have a few CCI as of right now, like 5 one thousand round boxes non magnum and 1 magnum,, but be prepared for sticker shock $160 and $180 respectively,,, look around you can find them on the net,, I just did a quick little search and found some,, prices are high but as they say if ya wanna play ya gotta pay and I just just don't think that it is gonna get better any time soon at all, the manufacturers have gotten to see that as long as they keep us hungry for them they can get big $'s for them,,, it's either that or just be at thier mercy for whatever they load and put out there for us to use,, then they are high priced as hell compared to pre covid years,,,, so take your pick but either way we get screwed unless you want to turn a safe full of guns into seriously expensive paper weights,,, anyhow take care my friend.

I got into reloading in the mid 90s when I separated from the navy . My basis of fireams experience was the 7.62 NATO / .308 Winchester , 45 ACP , and 12 gauge shotgun ammunition loadings . Over the years I have expanded my knowledge of other cartridges and loads . Thank you Mr Selby for your wisdom.

I concur 100%! I shoot and load for several cartridges over 40 years. My favorite is the 300 win mag. My favorite load for it is 70 grs of IMR 4350 using a180 grn bullet and 68 grs behind a 200 grn bullet. Winchester brass and a federal 215 match large rifle magnum primer. This works in 3 different rifles. 3" at 600 yards. Love the video!

My grandfather made me read a 1970ish speer reloading book when I was 14 before he would start to teach me, now I'm 30 and I'm just as infatuated with it now as I was back then and every time I shoot a group I always learn stuff whether it's something to do with the data or something to do with the chamber or the cartridge itself. And I just want to thank you for your time and effort that you put into these videos to share your knowledge with us. Not enough people hand down knowledge anymore and even more. Don't care to learn it, but you learn things from people that you can never learn in a book. And that's something that I firmly believe in. There's no greater teacher than the man that's been doing it his whole life because he knows what the book knows and then he knows what the book doesn't tell you. So thank you for all your effort and your due diligence in making your videos. And I always preach to my buddies that reload exactly what you say. Load your cartridge to peak performance and I had to do some recalculating with some of mine but for instance my 7 mm Remington ultra mag I shoot 175 grain spear Grand slam (the old ones, translucent yellow box) and my average velocity is 3311 fps shooting a.9-in group at 100yd and a 3.6" group at 300yd I would take that gun anywhere in the world

I’ve always considered myself a handloader instead of a reloader, but I definitely became a handloader when I got my first big bore wildcat. That has virtually no load data for it except 400 gr loads in the 1970’s. Luckily quick load exist or I probably would have blown my face off by now.

My first reloading experience was with the simple Lee Loaders in .357 and 30-30. That was 1968 when I was discharged from the Marines. In short order I bought a Rock Chucker and kept on going. It has been one of my favorite pastimes in life. I will enjoy this till I’m done. I also have a lifetime of info and have reloaded for probably twenty five+ calibers. Truly a hobby to love.

At 15 I got a MEC 600 JR for my birthday, and have loaded ever since. I still have my Lee loaders that required a hammer, I loaded 500 45 ACP using one on one memorable weekend. Here at 60 I load for a lot of cartridges including big mediums like the 3765 H&H and a 416 Rigby, and one big bore a 458 Winchester Magnum on a beautiful Mauser action. I have taken up bullet casting, it is a natural extension for a big bore revolver fan, and my 8 year old grandson helps now and then. It is a great dimension of the hobby. I load for a lot of reasons, but almost always use factory rounds when hunting for ether Mule Deer or Elk. I use a 300 Weatherby as my go to rifle, having bought a Vanguard 25 years ago. It is not in the class of rifles you make, but it is a game getter. I use Nosler bullets for game loads, and love Trophy Bear Claws too. I own a 550 yard rifle range, and have taken a Mule dear a hair past that. I could not sneak closer because it was across a canyon. It remains 15 years later the largest Mule Deer i have shot, though I did put my son on a 29 inch old boy when he was in High School. I totally agree the only criteria for picking a bullet is its performance once it reaches the game. And, I believe as a hunter first it is silly to have any cartridge lying around that has a bullet in it that would not perform on game, unless it is FMJ for the cheep practice in the 3 principal military rounds of this age. Blacktail hunting, being my go to hunt, and being a shorter range affair, is where I experiment with the rest of my rifles and use handloads. Sadly even being a dedicated hunter, the number of opportunities a man gets to take a game animal is a small number in this age. Despite lots of practice I still see 350 to 400 yards as a heck of a long ways to shoot an animal. The biggest variable is the wind, it may not take you off the whole elk, and then you have wounded animal and have a bear of a time even finding the start of the blood trail. Or, way out there is that twig or branch you can not see, and again your off to the race with a bad start. Your series has taught me a lot, and I look forward to each installment.

I take a lot of stock in what you say, so after listening I'm heartened that I am a handloader. Every few years I sell partial cans of powders that didn't work out. The neighbors who started me out advised me to try different primers, and I do, but it was quite a while before i met another who did, so good to heR you talk about primers.
@garrytalley8009
@garrytalley8009 5 месяцев назад
Primers are but one piece of the puzzle. Changing a primer is like changing the volume of powder. A primer is a portion of the charge. In a pistol it can be as much as 10 percent of the charge. The load changes when you change the powder volume as well. What he says is true, but it is just as much true as to just changing the powder volume often does the same thing. I hope you understand what I am saying. You will go broke and crazy changing primers to make a load shoot better. When you adjust a load, it is easier to deal with powder charge. Bullet length is just as crazy as trying several brands of primers. When you change the length of the bullet you change the case volume of the cartridge which also effect velocity which affects harmonics of the barrel. If you don't want to go crazy just keep it simple and when you change something to make a load better don't change but one thing at a time.

Personally, I only shoot game that I can get with a point blank zero without having to make a hold over. Not too many rifles will shoot flat enough to 300 yards. Most the magnums will also the 25-06 Remington, 270 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor are a few. If you don't have a large enough window to shoot you have to get right on right away. Happy hunting. Thank you for another great video. I can count myself a hand loader i suppose or at least in training... I started reloading 14 years ago with a lee "whack a mole" loader for 30-30, i then went all in on casting for the little 30-30 marlin with a micro groove barrel and that was a character building experience! I got it worked out as long as i stuck to loads under 1600 fps. I now load with an assortment of tools that i found work best for me... no the color doesn't match and most are older but in my opinion that doesn't matter... I still love my lymon 55 powder measures Old Redding scale, Pacific and rcbs presses. So far i have loaded for 50-70, 45-70, 30-30 ,30-06, 8x57, 270,30-40, 25-35, 450 Bushmaster, 45-120, and 458 Lott. Many of the cartridge's i load black powder, modern powder, cast bullets hand rolled lube ,also powder coating, along with modern jacketed bullets. I hunt with the old 30-06 because it's what i have and just white tail in Arkansas. I open a manual every once in a while to see the new fad or whatnot (6.5 who cares) i watch this channel and others but march to the beat of my own drum with respect to my reloading just going by what i have learned and watching for pressure. And yet, I still get the look of concern and the comment of "is that in the manual?" Every time i mention new things i am trying. My father in law worship's at the feet of his Hornady reloading manual and doesn't even trust a cartridge if he cant find it inside. I have noticed im not invited to the range as often because i like to shoot old single shots and load my way... Im just not as hip as the cool kids with the black rifles, i have the 450 Bushmaster in a ar just to fit in but i hate it... I have developed three loads for it but just cant see a use in my world for the little ugly thing. Anyway, thanks for the video and god bless.

Huntin Farmin Livin thanks for the laugh "Whack-A- Mole" reloader,, got a good laugh out of that,,, I started out that way about 46 years ago now,,, Except I always called it Russian roulette reloading because you never knew when just one too heavy or too many whacks while trying to install a primer,,, like a large rifle magnum one you are installing in a 458 winchester magnum case (or any primer for that matter,, I had more than a few do it over the years I used the whack a mole loader/russian roulette reloader) is going to go off while doing so in your cement wall half basement scare the S**T out of ya,,, make your ears ring because in that basement the damn things are freaking loud,, not to mention while burnt gunpowder smells kinda nice those stinking primers do NOT,,, but you get to smell it for some time to come because said basement could do with some better ventillation to say the least,,, thank GOD for real reloading presses and a better way to install primers LOL.

I believe him on the primers. I've got an H380 8X57 load I've made for years using CCI magnum primers. I ran out of those and substituted Winchester magnum primers, and it jacked up the pressure to dangerous levels.

When you take a cartridge to its limit that can happen with a hotter primer. You will find in time not all he said is applicable in working a load. There are few things in reloading that are constant. Remember he is giving you his opinion and it's based on hunting loads at no more than 300 yards. BC's do matter to long range shooters. Bench shooters are not concerned with velocity. He may be a real gunsmith and quite informative to many people, but just remember it's his opinions and are old school.
@RickNethery
@RickNethery 5 месяцев назад
@garrytalley8009 I kinda like old school logic. The load I was using wasn't a hot load until I substituted primers. He did mention that the Winchester magnum primers were hotter and he was right. H380 isn't an optimal powder for the cartridge I was loading, I just used it because i had a fairly good supply of it, and I was using magnum primers because the reloading manual called for them. The load I was making was more of a plinking load I shot for recreation.

I have been a handloader for a while. If the ballistics are similar to SAMMI levels and I get great accuracy....we roll with it. Find what works and is accurate. Try different things..you don't have to hot rod but find what your rifle likes and load to that. A reloader just reads a book and says x gives me this and I hits the target. A handloader looks and finds what is the most accurate load for their rifle. I shoot a number of older rifles and TC barrels chambered for rounds that are not the mainstream. You have to try within known parameters and make it work. I don't shoot long range magnums, but if I get sub MOA with a perfect bullet and powder combo....I have handloaded my best load...not necessarily a stated load. That is where load ladders and bullet seating depth make things fun and accurate. It is all about making the load/gun combo do the best that it can for the situation. I try and tell folks...max loads are not always the best. I shoot a 6.5 Swed... 2600 with the proper bullet and powder combo in a 100 yr old rifle that will kill whatever I shoot at with sub MOA and is the goal and rewarding.

Hi Randy hope all is well. I started reloading 35 years ago for saving money on ammo and over the years I have killed almost all my game with hand loads. I never cared about s/d or e/s just group size for the bullet I wanted to hunt with. I used 3 shot groups because the 4th and 5th shot don’t mean much to a hunter if you don’t hit with the first three. I never tried to get the most velocity I could but I live in the east so 300 yards is a rare occasion. I have a Remington 700 bdl from 1977 in 30-06 that I load with h4350 and 165 gn. Spear hot cor. Bullets to 2700 f/p/s. I have a Remington 783 in 308 that I load the same bullet to very close to same speed that I use when it’s raining so I don’t ruin the wood on the 30-06. Randy I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with us. I love the muzzle break you put on my tc encore barrel it tamed the recoil of the 35 Whelen right down. My .308 load calls for a mag primer per Lyman. I’ve been using CCI mil-spec for my SOCOM and will be using Federal magnums when I run out of the CCIs which say to use magnum primer data. I use standard primers in my 303 Enfield. I also use mags in my 7mm Remington Magnum per the load manual.

A mil spec primer should be fine. Mil spec primers are made to shoot high velocity loads. Mil spec stuff runs at higher pressures to get more velocity especially out of shorter barreled rifles like AR's. Don't go crazy over this primer thing he was talking about. You're lucky to even find large rifle primers these days.

The folks at the gunrange where I used to go to was green with envy because I would win 98 percent of the shooting matches using standard rounds instead of match bullets. When I attain single digits maximum deviation for a three shot string out of a cold bore, this is exactly what I am looking for. Semper Fi.

Nice. Accuracy is the best reason to hand load. I do myself but just purchased a 7mm PRC that I intend to hunt with and maybe if factory ammo shoots sub-MOA, I won't have to handload for it. Only time will tell on that though. Because of the high price to shoot this round I will not be shooting enough to merit reloading unless of course the rifle will not group well enough to hunt with. Oh, well. Obviously at $3 a round I am not going to play around and shoot factory ammo if I need to shoot a lot. And I am not paying $60 to $100 per box of 20 to test for the best factory load either. Handloading will come quick if the Hornady Precision Hunter does not group well.

@@user-se8ds5ev5kI agree on the price. The cartridge looks worthy, and I have decided to hunt with it. Shot for first time today. Shows promise. Only shot 7 rounds. @garrytalley8009 I'll just stick with old 1975 Remington BDL in 7 mm magnum. It is a one hole 3 shot gun as well with my precision handloaded ammunition. I don't give out my recipes for success because every single rifle is different. I have only one rifle that doesn't need reloading for accuracy and it's a Howa model 1500 243. It doesn't care if it's a Remington or winchester 100 grain core lok or a 100 grain winchester power point. I always wait for 15 minutes between shots to let them barrels retract from the heat with the bolt open to facilitate the process of cooling. My friends hate it because they have to wait for me to do it the right way, but I guarandamtee you that none of them can come close to the groups that I attain at any distance. That 243 is a one in a million, and still holds my personal record with a single hole the size of a soda straw looking right at you at 109 yards or 100 meters.

Hello Randy. You are a wealth of knowledge. I appreciate your sharing of that wealth with the rest of us. I am curious if you have any experience with the new SPEER bullet line IMPACT? It is supposed to be similarly constructed to the Nosler LR Accubond, but at a much more affordable price point. I just picked up some .308 190gr Speer Impact that I plan on loading for my 300 RUM. I used to use 180 gr. Accubonds but can't seem to find them these days, or much of anything Nosler here in Montana for that matter. Love your videos, and keep up the good work!

Would never presume to argue with you sir,, but speaking from while not quite as much as you bvut still bettter than 40 years as a handloader, who has loaded a pretty darn large number of different calibers over the years, I need to add one thing to the one primer brand versus another primer brand or magnum versus non magnum primers,,, while the primer mixture being "hotter" or "colder" is the main difference and varying greatly from one manufacturer to another, the other difference is the thickness of the metal of which the cup of the primer is pressed from,, generally a "magnum" primer is formed from slightly thicker material to stand up to the higher chamber pressures a "magnum" caliber tends to opperate on, the thicker cup walls also help, to better hold itself within the primer pocket and not back out of the pocket when that higher pressure trys to push it out,, then there is also manufacturing tollerences in what the individuall manufacturer calls "acceptable" variations in material thickness and dimensions of the finished product,,, the big thing is not all are created equal,, use good components by reputable makers follow information from reputable and well known sources,, doing otherwise can lead to far less than desirable results and can also be downright dangerous, beyond that you are spot on on all points.

Being old hands at reloading for almost 50 years, I could not agree more with all your comments. Short barrels for caliber though, leave a lot of unburned powder with slow, progressive propellants, which results in excessive muzzle blasts. I use Quick Load and Quick Target, which lets me calculate the burned propellant in relation to barrel length. I choose powders that burn 100% within the individual barrel. I also find most rounds perform best close or at maximum and vary seating depth in steps of 0.1 mm to find a harmonic spot of each particular barrel. Most of my game harvested was shot within 100 yards! Good hunters get close and take one clean shot, I was brought up that way. Thanks again for your always interesting videos.

Novice reloader here! I reload and shoot a 6.5 creed for my target rifle. 41.6 gr of 4350 with 140 eldm's and cci BR2's. Groups are .354" at 100 on average, but it took me a while to find my node. I also have .160" free bore in my barrel instead of the "saami" .199" free bore. Heavy chassis gun! My primary hunting rifle is an original browning abolt in 300wm. My question for the 300wm is, are you setting headspace off the belt or shoulder? And do you think .300wm's need a belt? Thanks!
@jasonshults368
@jasonshults368 2 месяца назад
The headspace gauge that is used on belted case chambers uses the belt to set headspace. There are no other gauges for these. That doesn't mean you can't size your cases to headspace off the shoulder when you reload, just like you'd do on cases without a belt. The belt is superfluous. It was originally used on the Holland & Holland case that had a lot of taper, and was for use in tropical climates, where pressures could vary greatly in the burning cordite powder due to temperature swings. It became colloquially named a magnum case after the 300 H&H gained noteriety in 1935 by winning the Wimbledon cup. Thereafter for several decades, the belted case was used for any cartridge that had the "magnum" moniker.

@@jasonshults368 Thanks for the in depth response. I've done a lot more research on the belted magnums and I have now reloaded ~0.002 bump off the shoulder for my .300 win. Yes, cordite. Ubiquitously used in the .303 Brit.

Never heard anybody concerned with, or touting, BC when I grew up. I remember men in the family talking about various hunts, and rifles and calibers they used, physical and functional characteristics of those firearms, and the greatness of this or that factory load they swore by. But, never did anyone ever mention BC. They hunted in the woods, and rarely exceeded ranges of, maybe, 300-yards. In fact, in the fifties and sixties, not many had, or used, scopes. What they went on about, was the sized of the game (mostly deer)...and the rack it had. None of this is to say that improvements and useful equipment aren't welcomed; they are. But, for individuals that understand (and were taught) real hunting, and the difference between that and other sport shooting, BC means practically nothing. Just as bullet design varies with application, specifications on all components have to be evaluated by knowledgeable and experienced users. If you don't understand the effective and practical needs of your sport...you really can't well evaluate the manufacturer's pitch. That's where the money's made.
