I've also used my demographics as a reason for not doing things I wanted. The reason it's so easy is like Dave said, the extra obstacles are real, racism, ageism, and sexism is real. It just means it will be harder not that it's impossible but it's easy to forget that. That's why it's so important to have these demographics occupying important roles in society, it shows it's possible.

Maybe your untapped potential is in an industry you’ve never considered My company is a software company and we have many past teachers that now are working with Software Engineers, Technical Support Representatives, Training Specialists, Implementation Specialists… Their common theme? They know how to listen and how to educate others If you see that in yourself, might be worth finding a unique path to apply your skills!

Being Female and late 50's the ageism barrier I had the belief that I could not quit my job and find something better. I turned that around and decided to quit and got a better job.. which I should have done 10 years ago!! I still have a couple of ex coworkers that is stuck in that belief.. and I cannot change their minds.

You scored on this one! People choose victimhood. I hear so many people say they can’t grow a garden for lots of reasons. Attempting to overcome the obstacles for elderly and handicapped folks, I learned about microdwarf tomatoes and other dwarf varieties of vegetables I learned about ways to grow in raised beds, with the Kratky method, learned about micro greens.. helping people who said they couldn’t afford to grow a garden I learned how to save seeds, how to use inexpensive items to grow. Obstacles are great for building your brain and your skill set!

I left my old job partially due to this reason. I had some coworkers that I worked closely with that constantly reminded me that they are poor, always will be poor, there's no way out of it, and anyone who tries to build wealth shouldn't waste their life away for money. That was too depressing to be around and now I'm trying to pursue a career I both enjoy and can make a decent income. I still talk to them occasionally and they still bring it up, but listening to Ramsey, I'm learning to ignore what they say, so that one day, I can live a better life than their "not my fault" mentality.

I don't always agree with Dave, but I'm sure onboard with his message on this one! I can't count the amount of times I was told I couldn't do this or that and ended up doing it. I have always been told I'm lucky, but I have put myself in spaces to get lucky. Amen to Dave.

I recently ended a relationship that started with a lot of promise, but the negative attitude of the other person was too much to overcome. There was often an immediate excuse of why she couldn't achieve her goals and make a better life. Every attempt to build her up was met with accusations of trying to manipulate her anxiety and fears. Talk about a toxic mindset.

Beliefs are based on evidence. If you want to convince people of something, and change their beliefs, you have to do it by showing them evidence. The evidence that you present to them has to be good enough to discredit the evidence that they based their beliefs on.

Trying to break out of my “Golden Cage” Blessings to you all and your family. Veterans Day per diem was great today. This was helpful appreciate the acknowledgment and encouragement. Yes not feeling validated at all can also maybe trip someone up, like people don’t really know or care (if they only knew) I think Chris Gardner the inspiration for the Pursuit of Happiness film, has another book about having a rough childhood. So thanks for the reminder.

Victims don't enter anything in good faith. If you think you're going to fail or something isn't going to work out, how can you ever make any effort in good faith? You can't possibly put your best foot forward if you have that victim mentality. That someone's got control over you, that your life is unfair. Start doing things in good faith and put your best foot forward regardless of what negativity is in your mind.

I'm in general agreement here, although I believe that Ramsey is not sensitized to the insurmountable obstacles that many poor people face. People growing up in inner city "projects", receiving substandard K-12 education, high dropout rates, evictions, no money for internet access, bad role models, gangs, etc. For them, ultimately achieving financial success is "possible", but about as likely as winning the lottery. My advantage was a two parent household.

Most Americans are raised in public schools to be good compliant workers and followers. Most were never taught to question the status quo. Making this even worse is your basic personality as well as the way you were raised and the culture. I'm a certified professional coach and a victim mentality does serve a purpose. It can protect you and help you realize change is needed. To work my clients out of victim mode, we must get to the core emotion and help them gain understanding around their conditioning and move towards acceptance and change. We all get into victim mode, it's how long we choose to stay there and that takes practice and awareness.

When you are in debt, you are automatically growing in debt. When you have money for n bank it is automatically growing without you doing anything about it. This rule can be extended to any situation. When you are in a toxic work place , it gets more and more toxic gradually. Just like being in debt, you and only you can take the initiative to take you out of debt. Same way, you and only you can take you out of toxic work place. Most of the time the only barrier you have is your belief system.

I have several people in my family and work that believe this. It is so frustrating. They will have every excuse in the book on why the average person has no chance or how the system is rigged towards the rich etc. Yet most know some of my story and have living proof right before their eyes on how I became a millionaire on a modest income, but even then, they will say yeah but. . . I don't get it I'm just glad I never had that mentality. I was never jealous of anyone's success and I was always grateful for what I had. Those three things have served me well. What also helped me is something I heard from Charlie Munger several years ago. It goes like this "Never, ever feel sorry for yourself no matter what" he says this when his first child was dying from cancer and he wanted to give up on life, but he never once said he felt sorry for himself. That story inspired me throughout the years in my moments of weakness. The bottom line is you choose if you want to be a victim or a winner.

If you happen to be born in a first world country with no serious disabilities Dave Ramsey is correct. If you are born in poverty in a third world country your chance is about one in a hundred thousand. Alot more people are born in third world countries. Fate and luck are major factors.

They’re starting with a destination people tell themselves is impossible (becoming a millionaire) and working backwards to identify and prove that it is Dave talks a lot about the most unlikely people being millionaires that follow their system and are then able to live and give like no one else because they chose to live like no one else

Both sides of the political spectrum are way too extreme on this topic. Obviously most people will do better if they work harder, but some people will have bad luck and need support. They'll get hit by a truck and need to go on disability payments no matter how much willpower they have. I have a far left brother in law that drives me up the freaking wall though. He thinks the taxpayer owes him universal basic income so that he can play video games. The man is 30 and has never lived on his own, he's always mooched off of others. I'm like, by your far left identity politics dogma, aren't you, an able bodied straight white male with a bachelors, in the best position to be the taxpayer that helps the less fortunate? He goes on and on about the people who need help, fine, so go help them already! Join us in the ranks of functional adults who are contributing to solutions! I feel the same way about the people who want to complain nonstop about climate change while eating beef three meals a day and driving a giant car and keeping the AC set to 60 degrees. If you care about this, do something already. It's always someone else who's expected to solve the problems they pretend to care about.

I’m in my mid 30s and a senior engineer. Thank god my wife and I have been saving all our lives and almost have a $1M nest egg. I use to believe if I worked very hard I could control my own destiny. But in this new “equity” business environment, and I no longer believe that. I’ve already been told “there are enough of my kind in management”. Our leadership already has published goals to hire a minimum of 50% female leadership. There is a massive irony in those claiming they cannot get ahead because of racism and sexism while ALL current policies in place only favor them.

I agree with the overall mindset. I really do. But, I also agree with looking at data. In 2000 a house + 4 year in-state degree + Honda Accord = 3.5 times the national house hold income. In 2021 that number is now about 5.6 times the national median house hold income. What that means in plain English is the median person starting out today can put in more work than the median person did in 2000 and still be well behind them. Are we willing to work toward moving that number back to where it was in 2000? If not at what point would we want to talk about that?

I agree with the sentiment, but I think it extends to poor people as a whole, especially in the millenial/gen z group. As a black man, I will corroborate that in terms of financial and career success, many black people I talk to have an extremely defeatist attitude. Either that or convince themselves that the only way a black person can find financial success is rapping or balling

Someone *else* has to agree to hire you. Sure - you can do things to make yourself appear more hirable - but you are still subject to the whims of another individual that you can’t 100% control. You can’t *force* someone to hire you. Ergo you are not 100% in charge of your own destiny until you’ve gotten where you want to go.

Racism exist, wealth inequality exists, sexism exists. Just because you know that fact doesn't mean you accept it as an inevitability of the world. I don't think people who tell you this are trying to trick you into being "lazy" or a "victim" I think they want you to know how the world really works and help you make better decisions (maybe even try to improve the world). If we all stopped being "victims" and pulled ourselves from our bootstraps you think we could all become rich? There are limited resources you know, not everyone can live in mansions.

Yes, the -isms exist, because there are good people and bad people in the world. That's why there are wars, scammers, cheaters, rap!sts, spouse-abusers, whatever. The issue discussed here is that when people hold on to the "victim" mentality, they are focused on self-pity, and may not even try to get themselves out of poverty. Consider how many penniless refugees from war-torn countries manage to do well here. It is the "I'm a surviver. I can do this" mentality. Is it tough? Yes. Can you fail? Yes. But get up and try again.

I agree with you but I see it as are a limited number of ways to make money and so everyone can not earn a lot without many using the same methods. If it were possible for people to make money doing anything and everything we could all be rich but......

This all sounds good, and I agree with much of it, but believing in yourself is not all that useful when the outcome is entirely dependent upon being selected by others out of the multitudes of contenders. Winning a starring role on Broadway or becoming America’s next top model is not something you can simply will into existence on the power of pure belief: “And all the stars that never were are parking cars and pumping gas.” I’m just saying Dave’s view, based on his personal experiences, is not the be-all, end-all of everything.
