I have been transitioning to a plant based diet for about ten weeks and I'm off metformin for the first time since I was sixteen years old! I can't believe how fast its worked! Course my doctor recommended greek yogurt and cheese sticks for my blood sugar lows! Thank you for getting all this information out there!

Japanese rice servings are very small. Yes they eat it for every meal but women only eat 3/4 cup serving. Then other small dishes are served like veggie dishes, miso soup, pickles, tamagoyaki omelette, etc. Diners eat a few bites of each communal dish. His heart will beat forever : ). So many complain about his pencil neck. Gee whiz, how about complimenting the extraordinary squared jaw? Yes, he'd look more 'Western-Eye Perfect' if he were to throw on some nice pounds of meaty muscle, but truly . . . no improvement to his health. I'm really not even sure that going into old age that skinny is a bad thing for a man. I think for women the osteoporosis may be more probably with zero gravitational forces on the joints for the last few decades of life.
@barbarafairbanks4578
@barbarafairbanks4578 2 года назад
@@eugeniebreida1583 with an increasingly low level of quality protein (per this diet) as we age, we are putting ourselves at risk of muscle mass loss, specifically skeletal muscle loss, which puts us on an accelerated path to sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is debilitating. Skeletal muscle is what supports and maintains our body's structur. Muscle is a metabolic organ...that 8s a biological fact. So many people are completely unaware that failing to increase their quality protein (*complete protein) intake as they age.. is why the aged are now relying on motorized scooters to get around, AND eventually are unable to walk without using a walker. This is also why Dr. Bernard has a pencil neck. The pronounced square jaw you see on his face is because his face has lost fat & muscle....we are seeing more & more of his skeletal frame because of his diet which is lacking in sufficient complete protein AND healthy fats. Think about what his body looks like under his clothing...not pretty. Now compare Dr. Barnard's face/body with, for instance, Dr.Andrew Weil, who is a year older than Dr. Barnard and looks healthy and robust. We do not see bones sticking out on his face. Dr. Neal looks like he could be knocked over with a feather. His face looks skeletal and gaunt. Dr. Weil follows the Mediterranean diet and is not meat, (animal protein) phobic nor is he lipid phobic (i.e. healthy fats). Depriving ourselves of the increasing QUALITY protein (i.e., complete protein) that we REQUIRE as we age (specifically complete protein, i.e., all 9 essential amino acids - in other words *animal protein s sufficient animal protein. And no aim not talking 'carnivore' diet). Without incorporating complete protein in sufficient amounts in our diet, especially as we age, will put us squarely on the path to sarcopenia. After the age of 25 our body's natural hormones, which in our youth encouraged muscle protein synthesis, begin to wane. Every year these muscle growth hormones are lowered even further, and we need to begin relying more and more on ingesting sufficient amounts of whole *complete protein to help maintain our muscles. And I'm not just referring to muscles like biceps, glute muscle, quadricep muscle that make us look good and keep us strong - I'm talking about skeletal muscle (muscle mass that attaches to our bones) that keeps our body functional well into advanced age. Two things that are imperative in older age to help maintain our muscular structure- strength (resistance) training exercises AND sufficient QUALITY (complete) protein in our diet - that means the full complement of all 9 essential amino acids in quantities that surpass the protein RDA (protein RDA is outdated and was established decades ago at the lowest amount of protein to sustain life - not to THRIVE, but to sustain life) - we need higher amounts of complete protein than the current RDA the older we get...again, because our bodies no longer have the hormones we had in our youth to build/sustain a healthy amount of muscle mass. Google Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, MD who practices 'Muscle Centric Medicine' in N.Y. , for the correct data on why we need to increase our quality protein intake (and regularly strength train) as ws age, to avoid debilitating sarcopenia in our older years. . She knows what she is talking about (& practicing in her medical clinic) Her medical training included a post-doctoral internship in Geriatric Medicine.

Never listen to people without basis, Chuck. I eat lots of rice, and other grains, all kinds of sweet potatoes, glutinous rice, etc, my blood glucose is just slightly above 4 mmole/liter. Most of the vegans who have these problems are not contributed by the wholesome carbo foods but from other foods like eggs or dairy! Many adventists are oval-lacto vegans and their data is about the same as any omnivores! Just go for yearly medical screening to check your blood glucose! Like what Dr Bernard have explained are based on scientific data not hearsay, everthing goes according data! Eat as simple as possible like salt, pepper, spices, garlic, onion, ginger, etc. I have been a vegan for 21 years, my HDL, LDL, blood glucose, heamoglobin were excellent as commented by my non vegan doctor! Many people who reverse their vegan diet back to omnivore diet are people who are lack of faith and normally eat something 1. Man-made, 2. Without fibers! Of all the questions raised by listeners Chuck raised with all kinds of health problems like migraines, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, etc even they are vegans, I would say they are unwholesome vegans! or oval or oval-lacto vegans! It is impossible to have high cholesterol, if you are a vegan! As for high blood pressure, even dehydration, too much blood glucose, irregular sleeping time, etc can cause high blood pressure!

Excuse me Dr. Barnard but your statements about Japan are not quite accurate. I lived in Japan. Yes they eat rice, and at least twice and sometimes 3x a day; however, the servings are relatively small. They also serve many other dishes at every meal..soup, veggies, pickled veggies, fish, maybe a bit of meat a few days a week, but PORTIONS ARE VERY SMALL. Japanese people walk a lot every single as part of their every day living. They eat communally as often as possible. The amounts of food, including complex carbs, that I see american vegans eating are outlandish. Portion sizes matter.
@wishingb5859
@wishingb5859 3 года назад
Perhaps. But Dr. Barnards studies have allowed people to eat whatever portion they wanted as long as the foods were low fat and he succeeded at reversing diabetes and people lost 1 to 3 pounds per week without looking at portion size and that is why he is saying that.

An old herbal remedy that I knew to work for one life long migraine sufferer: feverfew. Can cause nausea, so start with a small dose and work up to a larger one so your body can build tolerance. You can probably find suggested dosages with google. You might also try taking it in different ways, such as capsules, extracts, and teas.

To me there's a big difference between a sweet potato and noodles, even without toppings. Dr. Barnard is great but to me he's too permissive of processed and high glycemic carbs and too restrictive of whole plant fats like nuts, seeds and avocados. I am in a similar boat! Have you tried pumpkin seeds? Of all the nuts and seeds, they are the only one that doesn't hurt. It might also help to cook your beans from scratch (and like possibly soak them first). Idk why, but it seems like people will mast cell overactivation are sensitive to the antinutrients in legumes and canned ones aren't great in that regard. And this is not talked about much outside the Mast Cell Activation Syndrome and Mastocytosis community, but in general, overactive mast cells are actually a big reason for why people get migraines even without the presence of a mast cell disorder. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15960987/#:~:text=Brain%20mast%20cells%20can%20also,to%20precipitate%20or%20exacerbate%20migraines. And of course talk to your doctor about this, but it might help to do a quercetin supplement. This paper talks about that is helpful or migraines, and the reasoning for why it helps is just like Dr. Bernard said in the video. Some people have allergic-like reactions to certain foods (the mechanism is through mast cells), and so things that target the mast cells does often work. Quercetin is a natural mast cell stabilizer, along with curcumin, vitamin C (but many seem to react badly to citrus), and some other things. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7070237/ Based on what you said about the antibiotic issue, it might help to find a low-histamine probiotic. Histamine is one of the things that makes mast cells activate, and fermented foods and probiotics tend to have a lot of histamine. I know there's at least one or two low histamine probiotics on the market luckily.

I appreciated what you said about the migraines and the allergic-like reactions that can cause them. I'd definitely like it if you could talk more about mast cell issues, especially given that Mast Cell Activation Syndrome is incredibly underdiagnosed (it is estimated to affect up to 17% of the population but few have a diagnosis), and mast cells are also implicated in numerous other health issues. I think you could help a lot of people if you discussed this

I just read something about why your headaches could go away with a vegan diet yesterday so I thought I'd share for those asking. Dilation of blood vessels in the head is a common cause of chronic headaches. It's thought that fat from our food absorbed from the intestine into the bloodstream can cause blood components such as platelets to stick together as mentioned. This begins a complicated chemical process in our bodies and results in the release of hormone like substances called prostaglandins., which cause the headaches by dilating the blood vessels in the head. Eating low fat vegan diet however the platelets are much less likely to clump so that prostaglandins are released less often and headaches are prevented. Which makes sense because that's why we love drinking coffee because the caffeine in coffee constricts blood vessels also and its the reason it's in Excedrin.

Okay, something should be said about the individual's response to carbohydrate amounts in a meal, even with PBWF. I, for instance, get sugar spikes if I ingest more than 80 grams of carbohydrate per meal, and I only eat whole food sources, no processed junk. I experience tiredness and fatigue 30-45 minutes after a meal with say 100-110 grams of carbohydrate (2700 calories maintenance daily over 5 meals). If I ingest 65-80 grams of the same carb sources, no spike. Because of this, I track my macros and calorie intake to find the best mix. This is essential if I want to feel my best. Blanket statements like the amount of carbohydrates does not matter can be misleading. For it does matter according to the individual, and this requires tracking, at first, to find the optimal dialed-in ratio.

I agree that carbs are less calories and it is harder to overdo, but you CAN do so! If you habitually stuff yourself and eat ANY food all day, you can can eat too many of them. If you did it with cheese, ice cream, and meat, you can overdo it earlier. The act of eating can be compulsive. Discipline is needed until it becomes habitual to stop eating and limit or avoid in-between meal snacking of any kind.

@dj-fe4ck 3 года назад
I'm not convinced that calorie density matters that much, at least with high carb plant foods. Dates are about 1200 calories per pound and it's almost impossible to eat more than 2000 calories of them in one day. Boiled grains and legumes like, quinoa, oats, rice, buckwheat, beans and lentils are about 600 calories per pound, half the calorie density, and I can eat 2500-3500 calories of them in a day. If I also eat whole grain bread, about 1200 calories per pound, I still eat the same amount of calories as I would have if I ate boiled grains at 600 calories per pound. I think limiting fat and oils matters much more than calorie density.
@chiyerano

@@dj-fe4ck Well I am just focusing on whole plant based foods without oil, sugar, and very little salt as the sources of my calories and macros since I don't want to count calories or be concerned about macros which becomes more of a challenge when you add processed foods such as oils and refined sugar. I have noticed others do this type of thing and successfully lose weight so I think there may be something to the whole calorie density thing. Of course you go do what you want.

Learning about insulin resistance might help. For instance, eating late at night causes it. Not sleeping causes it. Too much stress causes it. Too much caffeine causes it. Eating too much sugar and fat. I had gone Whole Food Plant-Based no oil but I still needed the apple cider vinegar or amla because I don't sleep, have a lot of stress, and get out of work so late that I don't eat dinner until 9 pm or after. Dr. Greger explained that low glycemic foods respond like high glycemic foods at night. I had to shift some of the calories to morning instead of night and I had to add in things like lentils and beans which prevent sugar spikes. Each thing that prevents sugar spikes helps. If you do things like drinking soda or cooking with oil, just getting rid of those can help.

I'm healthy but ordered a CGM and even whole grains and legumes cause spikes... Are they really safe to eat? I've tried lowering the amount but it doesn't help. I only weigh 49 kg and been skinny my entire life (BMI currently 18.2). I workout almost every day

Are you low enough in fats? Fats and animal products cause carbs to spike doubly high. Also, if you eat too late at night, they can spike twice as much as if you eat them earlier in the day. Lentils lower the blood sugar spike of the next meal and even the meal after that. It is called the "lentil effect" Beans, too. As far as grains go, it depends on which type and if they are as whole as possible. Oat groats versus instant oatmeal. Flour isn't good but whole grains that are really whole are generally good.

@@wishingb5859 I am metabolically healthy and I don't consume much fat. Probably not as little as actual diabetic people need to, though. But when I add more fats (plant based) to my meals the spikes aren't as big.

@@Luckygirlme111 No fats spike blood sugar. BUT they do increase insulin resistance and that can increase blood sugar spikes secondarily. People get 15% more insulin resistance on a higher fat diet and drop 15% on a lower fat diet. That has been studied. Whole food sources like nuts aren't a problem and they do decrease blood sugar spikes but any oils increase insulin resistance.

@@wishingb5859 Yeah but I don't consume oils, only maybe once in a full moon, haha. My main fat sources are from avocado, whole seeds and tahini :)

@@Luckygirlme111 I didn't reverse my insulin resistance until I ditched the tahini. I loved hummus but I didn't lose a pound and had blood sugar issues until I got rid of it. It was such a bummer.

This may be a dumb question, but how do I submit a question for Dr. Barnard?
