This would also explain the Fermi paradox. Why explore a universe when you can create one. I would think that this technology would be simpler then Crossing hundreds of light-years or building Dyson spheres. A mistake this series makes in my opinion is they just think it requires a more powerful computer. When we were playing with RadioShack computers back in the 90's we all just assumed that 30 years from now we would have really powerful desktop computers. The vast majority of us had absolutely no conception of a smartphone. It wasn't that we thought it was too complicated to be built, it was that the thought never occurred to us. Whatever builds these simulations will resemble a computer about as much as a smartphone resembles a slide rule. I personally have never heard anybody refer to a smartphone as a really powerful slide rule😁

If we were simulated, the world would be run by EA, which is why we have to pay for just about everything in order to continue our quests.

Being in a simulation doesn't necessarily mean the simulation was designed (like we design games). Another type of simulation happens when very simple rules are computed recursively giving rise to very complex structures (like fractals). The later type of simulation doesn't need a sophisticated designer.

Actually, to answer Neil's question with the dart, you are probably most likely to hit the largest universe. Each successive universe is probably at least 10x smaller in scope than the one it simulates. Unless... somehow a computer in one universe is able to somehow magically (technologically) simulate a larger universe than it exists in.

About rendering. One physical phenomena that I believe demonstrate that is Young's Double Slit, with electrons. You throw some electron through the slits, don't observe each electron , boom you have an interference pattern, in other words electron didn't get rendered. Place a detector at slits, and suddenly interference disappears , so the electron got rendered?

Many times it is mentioned that a computer of a certain power is needed to simulate us. But we would never know if it takes 2 days of "Real Time" to simulate one second of our time. Kind of in an opposite manner - big mainframe computers can solve a particular problem in say 2 minutes of what is called "Wall Time" but the CPU time for the problem might be only 2 seconds.

There is, by definition, no difference between a perfectly illusion and reality. If you can tell the difference, the illusion is not perfect. So until we come up with something that cannot be explained any other way. the question of whether all this is "really" real is meaningless and banal.

Many people make jokes about the possibility of the simulation lagging or bugging or such, which really just shows that even though you somewhat want to believe this and might think you believe it, you don't. What I mean is this: we understand and know for certain that characters in games are not self-aware. We do. Let's be realistic. Assuming that we get to a point in technology where we are literally able to make self-conscious characters (whether we intend to or not), is mind-blowing. Seriously. We are literally able to create a physical, self-thinking being or makes decisions for themselves and chooses who he/she wants to be. What I'm thinking is somewhat difficult to word, but I'm sum it up with this: we will soon be able to find out if we can physically create a simulation with self-conscious characters. We're able to do it with AI in real life, just have not been able to place it into an actual simulated environment. When we get to that point, we will decide what time period we want place the simulation. If we place this simulation at the beginning of time (highly likely as we want to see how a species would naturally evolve), history will restart. It will loop. Over. And over. And over. Endlessly looping. There will either be big changes in history and time and how it all happened, or there will be not a single change. Everything happening second for second how it did in the previous simulation. It's such a brilliantly interesting and in-depth concept. Thanks if you've made it this far lmao.

I think about this every day. It’s a little creepy.

Well, there is an argument against the "simulation" conjecture. It's called Occam's Razor which is an important part of science. The idea is that if you are looking for an explanation for something, you should look for the simplest one able to account for all the facts. The reason is that the more unnecessarily complex it gets, the less probable it is the actual explanation. Here's why: Sometimes laws or rules that a universe follows are actually constraints on what can happen. Put in too many (complicate it too much that way) and you can constrain your reality out of existence (your model can't explain your universe). Other times, you might make so many things possible, in trying to be able to explain everything, that the amount of significantly different universes your model allows may be so immensely huge that the probability that it actually corresponds to your universe is infinitely small. Even more, that idea is related to a part of Physics called Thermodynamics, which explains why when you mix, say, water and sugar, the dissolved sugar never -on it's own- separates from the water again to form solid sugar crystals: A "state" is where each molecule is, how it's oriented, and what it's doing (rotating quickly in this direction, this part vibrating slowly, going quickly towards the right...) When you give the water and sugar the freedom of mixing, it opens up so immensely more actually possible sugar mixed with water states than there are possible sugar separate from water states that there is simply no significant chance that by random motion and change the sugar and water will reach a "being separate" state again. A "too free" model of the Universe will not give you your universe, but rather one of a much larger group. The "simulation" explanation seems to me as one of the latter, because while a simulation (purportedly "our universe") has to be simpler than the actual universe in which it is made, else it would not be computable, here the "actual universe" in this scenario would be a free for all of anything. Furthermore, this idea shouldn't make you lose sleep because even if you were in a simulation, as long as all those to which we relate are in the same and we are all truly sentient (conscious) and mortal, our relationships are real and an abrupt end to the simulation would simply be our turn to die. Additionally, it is questionable we even need to be truly conscious, as Bhuddists see ourselves as machines made of smaller parts, and if the parts are not conscious, there is no reason to think the whole is, so we only experience the illusion of consciousness. And yet they live their lives. As a final measure, you might also want to apply the "proof beyond a reasonable doubt" criterion -emphasis on "reasonable"-. Now, does that simulation idea hit you as reasonable, versus our understanding of a coherent, law abiding universe? Which brings us back to Occam's razor.

Who says the creators of a world like this have to be human? Us humans make games with alien like creatures, what if this is a simulation with completely different laws of physics and completely different characters than in the "real world" If so, what would the 'real world' be like? And if we found out about it, would our lives change because of said knowledge? This would solve a lot of plot holes in the simulation theory.
