Join us for an exciting and informative live stream where we will reveal the pathway all future Airmen must navigate. Whether you are preparing to enlist or if you are beginning the process to become a commissioned officer in a rated or nonrated career, you will find this live stream very helpful. We’re going to introduce you to experts who can tell you everything you can expect about physical examinations, medical records and waivers. This live stream can save you time and lessen an applicant’s anxiety concerning medical qualification.
Our recruiters will be on hand to answer your questions and share valuable insights, while subject matter experts from Air Force Recruiting Service’s Medical Waivers Division and the Military Enlistment Processing Command will take questions and provide valuable insight about the physical examination process. This is an exclusive opportunity not to be missed - there's never been a better time to join us and be part of something special!
This week’s Line Up:
Topic: Revealing the process applicants follow to pass a medical exam. We will talk about the medical examination which typically occurs at a Military Entrance Processing Station. We’ll tell you what records are reviewed and what conditions may lead to disqualification or trigger a medical waiver review.
Guest: We have Army Colonel Kevin Cummings, Military Entrance Processing Command’s surgeon plus Col Ian Gregory from Air Force Recruiting Service’s Medical Waiver Division. These experts examine applicants and medical records to determine if an applicant meets Air Force standards to enlist, to become a commissioned officer, or serve in one of many specialized career fields. Also, MSgt Benjamin Hardy, Seattle MEPS, MEPS liaison supervisor.
Q&A: Answering as many of your questions live as time permits. Make sure when posting a question to put “Q:” before your question, thanks.
Join us live every other Tuesday at 2 PM CST (1400 for the military people out there) Don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE! That way you will not miss an episode and always check out the description for links and resources on the content covered on the show!

I’m 35 and beat testicular cancer over three years ago. I’m in great health and I am about to start the process to see if I can get a waiver to join the Air National Guard. I feel like I have a second chance in life to do the one thing that I have always wanted to do, serve. I am super excited that there is a chance. Thanks guys!

I’m right there with you except for the cancer. I’m also 35, and I’m so happy they relaxed their qualifications. When I was growing up they only accepted the best people, but now I can finally get in and serve my country. Let me know your story. I’d love to hear you get in. You’ll have to like this comment because I don’t see replies in my feed.

@@Technicallyaddictedthe best people are the people who really want to be there - who want to serve our country. Sometimes we are dealt unfair cards with our health but that shouldn’t stop us from serving our country if we really really want to.

@@TechnicallyaddictedI just seen this response. I’ve been trying to get finances in order so I can step away from my job long enough for training if they accept my waiver. Also, it’s a big decision for my wife and we have a child. She’s been up and down about agreeing but things are looking better financially so I am about to visit my doctor to run some tests to get a letter of good health to help with my waiver. We will see… did you enlist?

Not exactly true. I am not a recruiter or MEPS Chief Medical Officer but I’ll say this anyway speaking from what I learned. I’m sure there are still some medical and moral disqualifiers the Air Force will draw a hard line on and not waive such as current or history of depression and antidepressant use. I talked to a coworker 3 years ago who was denied from all five military branches, Air Force included, because of his depression history and the medicine he took for it. They say that the Army has a waiver for everything which is also far from the truth. Another coworker I spoke to two years ago applied for the Army and was even motivated and shed extra pounds to meet the height and weight standards. A waiver was requested for his current depression and medication to treat it. It got kicked back with a Denied status two weeks later. The applicant and recruiter was disappointed about it. Turns out the Army will not waive depression and antidepressant use either.

What is the likelihood that I will be excepted to join the Air Force reserve when I am technically 20 pounds “overweight” ? since I am 26 and I have enjoyed playing sports, my whole life and I’ve been competitively powerlifting the last two years. I am heavier built, but can still run 3 miles out of eight minute pace on any given day, and my conditioning is the best it’s ever been. Is there a waiver that I could try to take advantage of?

The doctor at the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) makes that determination. Your local recruiter can have your medical records for this condition prescreened by the doctor at MEPS for a preliminary ruling in your situation. So about three years ago I discovered a sebaceous cyst on my back, about the size of a quarter next to my spine. It never hurt, but people would comment on it when I was at the pool swimming. So a couple months ago I decided to have it removed. Purely from a cosmetic perspective. Now I have a scar an inch and a half long in its place. It’s completely healed over and have no issues. Would having this scar disqualify me? I have the paperwork from the surgeon saying that is a cyst and my receipt from the hospital. The thing that makes this confusing is that I had the procedure done abroad in Kuwait. I currently work here and am moving back to the USA in a couple months and plan on enlisting.

Christopher, Unfortunately, this could potentially be medically disqualifying. However, the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) doctor (not the recruiter) makes that determination if you are medically qualified to join the Air Force and any career limitations. You will need to gather your medical/pharmacy records for this condition and provide them to your recruiter. Then your local recruiter can have your medical records for this condition prescreened by the doctor at MEPS for a preliminary ruling in your particular situation.
