Hi, Major. Small point, Boudica wasn't part of the Germanic tribes. "Boudica or Boudicca, was a queen of the ancient British Iceni tribe, who led a failed uprising against the conquering forces of the Roman Empire in AD 60 or 61. She is considered a British national heroine and a symbol of the struggle for justice and independence."

Yeah, she apparently burnt down St Albans twice, as it was a Roman settlement. I’m from Hertfordshire so I like to think that I’m walking about somewhere she walked. It’s a shame that they changed tactics in their last battle, they should have kept to gorilla warfare, open combat with Romans wasn’t a good idea back then.

I will give you mega points for reading Marcus' Meditations. A truly extraordinary work. I read it for the first time decades ago and it convinced me that Marcus was one of the very few men in history you could safely trust with absolute power. I will point out that in real life Commodus was even stranger than in this film. Fun fact they originally going to have a scene were Maximus would be advertising Olive Oil etc., but they cut it because they thought audiences would think it both incredibly anachonistic and hoky. Surprisingly in reality in Rome famous Gladiators did in fact advertise products for money and they also had action figures of themselves sold. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

36:00 One of my favorite points in the movie. Even sold into slavery Maximus is still a born leader of men. He lead his fellow gladiator to victory. I love that when it looked like Commodus was going to kill him, the other gladiator stepped up and had his back. Brotherhood!

If you like historical fiction you need to watch Master and Commander also with Russel Crowe and is viewed as one of the most accurate depictions of life and war at sea in the early 19th century not to mention a compelling story and stellar cast, many of whom you will recognize, Also if you liked Vikings you need to watch The Last Kingdom a TV series based on The Saxon Chronicles by Bernard Shaw. It takes place during the time of King Alfred and the height of the viking age. Our main protagonist Uhtred is fictional but many of the battles and political machinations are historical fact with the circumstances being somewhat fictionalized. An excellent show that they didn't fuck up the ending like GOT and we still have a movie coming as icing on the cake.

The story of Hannibal was a fascinating one. He took elephants across the Alps rather than horses because they were m9re accustomed to the harsh, wintry conditions in the mountains. Also they defeated the Romans at the Battle of Cannae in what is believed to be Rome's worst ever defeat. Legend has it that there were more Roman soldiers killed and captured in that one day of battle at Cannae than all the Americans killed and captured in the entire Vietnam War!

The movie Titus (1999) with Anthony Hopkins and Jessica Lange is adapted from Shakespeare's *Titus Andronicus*. It's a revenge tragedy based in Roman times. Titus the general returns to Rome victorious and decides to sacrifice the son of his enemy, the Goths, to appease the Roman dead. The Queen of the Goths pleads for her son's life to no avail so she sets out on a mission of retaliation. It's a savage and sometimes shocking movie. I love it. I've found that when the Elizabethan/Shakespearean English is used having the subtitles on is really helpful.

Allow me to preface what I’m about to say with the fact that I freakin LOVE this movie. But this movie gives people a completely distorted view of a gladiator’s life. In reality, gladiators almost never died. Who were gladiators? They were slaves. Owned by slave owners. Does anyone actually think that these slave owners would throw their property to death all willy-nilly? Why? So they constantly had to spend more money to buy slaves? Slaves were not easy to acquire, not to mention that not every slave was worthy of the expense of being housed, fed and trained as a gladiator. Occasionally accidents occurred and a fighter was maimed or killed in the arena, but that was not the norm. Now here’s the mind blowing part. Most of them knew each other and most often even trained together. They had almost no interest in hurting one another. They were in one town this weekend and in another town next weekend. They were the ancient equivalent of…. WWE wrestlers. They were entertainers. It was a show and dance. Smoke and misdirection.

Sorry if this is already commented on, Boudicca was in Britain, not Germania. She committed suicide ( it’s rumoured) rather than be captured after her force was defeated. I think a large number of Germanic tribes were not defeated. We are describing a Europe whose borders were very different to modern times or even recent historical references. The history is endlessly fascinating.

A question I like to ask people. You are hosting a dinner party, you have a setting for eight people including yourself, who else in history would you invite? (Political figures, Entertainers, Athletes, Inventors, Innovators, anyone in history), and in what place at the table will they be seated? I usually would place myself at one of the heads of the table. Anyone care to play and share, it would be interesting. You can share this with your friends too.

The Romans lost to theGermanic tribes in like 105 AD but later in 108 or 109 the Romans came back to defeat them. In reality, Commodus didn’t kill Marcus Aurelius. There was no reason to, since Marcus was grooming him to take over. They were co-emperors for the last few years of Marcus' life, then Commodus became Emperor by himself. The rebellion led my sister really happened, but it was crushed fairly quickly, and Commodus had her and the other ringleaders executed.

Yes, of course there was a Marcus Aurelius who was the Roman emperor, with a son Commodus and a daughter Lucilla, but that's about where the accuracy ends. Commodus did become emperor when his father died, but he didn't kill his father. There was no gladiator Maximus. And Marcus Aurelius had a co-emperor ruling with him (Lucius Verus), who Lucilla was married to. On and on, but I still love this movie.

I hate to be that guy, but the scene where Marcus points to the map, and claims that's the empire he made, is 100% wrong. The barbarians are also fairly misrepresented, as they trained with the Romans, and it would've been a little more equal that way. Alot of them would've been ex mercs for Rome, still having their legionaire equipment. Marcus didn't expand the borders, but he knew how to keep the tribes separated, and able to be destroyed one at a time, rather than in a big brawl, it took him well over a decade. The last emperor to expand the borders was Trajan, who's rule was 60 years before Marcus. And you were correct about them splitting the empire, Marcus and Lucius Verus, which is Marcus' son in law in this movie. In reality, they were half brothers. Maximus is fictional.

a less known show thats actually really well done and isnt exsactly based on a true story but has alot of real peole from the pirate wave on Nassau island in the 1700's charles vain anne bonne edward teech who was the real blackbeard and jack rackham were all real pirate's around that time. its called Black sail's and has some of the best sword fighting and old naval cannon battles and is one show that i never knew what was gonna happen next and was always on the edge of ur seat. its honestly better then game of thrones in my opionion and i wouldnt say that lightly im a big GOT fanold style. and also the Mongals were probly the scariest people back then when they were in power. they killed alot of people but also thats just how thngs were back then.

I also suggested Black Sails. Some of the best TV ever made. They had a clear vision from beginning to end without a wasted scene or words and the acting is beyond compare.

I like watching your reactions, and I saw what you said about it. but you do need to turn up the volume on the movie.

there are some artistic changes in the movie that are not historically accurate. So take the plot of the movie with a grain of salt.

You know how some people refer to the toilet as the "Commode"? Guess where that word comes from 🙃
