In Alaska, we have a list you can join to take the moose meat if one gets hit on the road (and dies). There are a lot of people on the list, so you may be on it for a long while before they will call you. They go in order of when people joined the list and you have to be able to collect the moose within an hour or two of it being hit. The list also prevents people from just chasing down moose and hitting them on purpose to collect the meat.

The deer I know is true since I live in the midwest. But moose are freaking huge. How big are the trucks in Alaska that the officials there fear people chasing moose down and running them over for free meat? I'd be more scared of hitting one, surviving, and having to walk the 30 miles to get cell phone reception.

In England, if you hit an animal, you can't take it to use for meat or taxidermy - but anyone else could, even the vehicle right behind you. It's to prevent people from going out of their way to hit an animal just to take it.

My friend and I were driving out to go hiking. We were in a truck and we pass a lady pulled over on the side of the road, a dead deer, and a cop. My friend pulls over to ask if everyone is okay/if they need a ride and theyre all good and dont need a ride. Then he says "can i take that" and points at the deer. The cop said yes, so our hiking activity turned into gutting a deer activity 😂

As a lifelong PA resident I can confirm you can keep the meat after hitting a deer lol. When I was a kid my dad hit a deer and I distinctly remember the image of the deer's lifeless expression as its head hung over the seat from the hatch as I was sat in the backseat. My dad called the game commission to make sure he could take it and they were like "Yep it's all yours"

My dad is from Florida and I was down visiting and we hit a deer, he got out, put it out of its misery and took us home then went out in his truck to bring it back to butcher, but by the time he got there a gator had already drug it into the swamp lol

I was once on a highway in PA with my uncle in his work van and a car in front of us a ways hit the back end of a deer. The deer was dying on the shoulder so he pulled over in front of it a little bit, looked in his mirror and said “hold on a sec, let me line this up” proceeds to back over the animals head, killing it instantly… he gets out, throws it in the back of the van, and we went straight to the butcher 😂
