I have been battling stage IV breast cancer for 7 years now. After my diagnosis, the only thing on my bucket list was getting a British Shorthair. I ended up with two--a blue and a tabby. They are one of the reasons I have lived so long with my diagnosis.
My aunt had breast cancer and owned a Russian Blue. Every time my aunt had chemo and became nauseous when she came home her cat ("Natasha") would follow her into the bathroom, sit on the sink and wait, and then jump into her lap to give her comfort. My aunt said that her cat instinctively knew when she was depressed/sad and would try and comfort her.
@GaryB-01 I hope you are on the mend. My husband had a brain tumor many years ago and is doing well. We recently adopted an orange kitten from the shelter and he loves to play with our blue named Baby.
We have a rescue, Sidney, who must be at least part British Shorthair. He is blue and looks very much like this cat, but he's bigger, 22 lbs. He has many of the characteristics, but no papers. He is extremely intelligent and lovable. If he were a person he'd be doing puzzles. We love him sooo much. We have another cat, a Calico, who keeps him active, otherwise he'd be a complete couch potato.
I like how a British short hair appears more rounded than the American short hair, myself. A note about some of these tips you shared: some of these things are not inherent to the breed, but a part of your cat's unique personality. My cat dislikes loud noises, though she was raised around vacuum cleaners and computers running playlists. If I start up a vacuum, she will run as far as she can and hide from it. If I were to grab a bag and rattle the plastic, she would leave the room. Every cat just has these unique quirks about them. It's what makes having a pet fun and interesting. You learn them - they learn you.
My British shorthair is very vocal. He doesn't like sitting on my lap but enjoys petting. He is very playful and energetic. At the beginning he was very picky with food, but now he has learned to eat or less he will have no food. He was kinda addicted to a cat food with sugar so I had to feed him another without sugar. He is very collected. He hasn't scratched me once and he doesn't like to use his claws on me.
Because the But a short hair is so big I may get a female. I live in a small condo. I don't know if it's okay to have such a big cat. Can you give me any positives and negatives with your female british short hair please.
@@ricknowak4582 positives would be he is independent he likes sleeping On my bed, he always greets everyone at the door, he likes being stroked and held and has loud purr he likes climbing On counters he is also loving towards family members, he is very talkative and likes treats and sachets he likes following around the house he likes being brushed isnt scared of dogs and children, negatives fussy with food dont like being held for too long doesnt like strangers and other cats he hates the vaccum blood and needles he is expensive doesnt like loud noises he dont like people teasing him
@@ricknowak4582 Ours is a female and she is very chunky. BSH are solid, large cats. However they make great indoor only pets due to being lazy. They need exercise in you playing with them. (They are very playful) and you need to watch their weight. They can eat you out of house and home if you let them. You will be fine with one, Just do some research on them, There is plenty out there
I prefer the irl uploads! It’s how YT was in its glory days… not shunning the productions a lot of YT has become (I will watch when a subject catches my eye- and also alllll the film students exercising their crafts who may not have found work have an outlet…that aside; I truly love straight uploads)… very authentic and exactly what social media used to be- a way for common ppl to just share our lives and find community…mochi is too cuuuuute!!!
My BSH boy doesn’t like sitting on my lap or being picked up. However, he does follow me around staying close by observing me and likes sleeping next to me.
My British sitting on my lap Everytime she sees I'm chilling, she loves petting 😊and daily at 5am she's lying on top of me to wake me up,, keeps meowing
As an owner of 9 British shorthairs over 20 years, I can attest they are a wonderful breed. It is true they usually don't like to be on your lap. However I have several who gradually warmed up to lying in my lap, some I have now still won't sit on me. Mochi obviously loves being close to you. Brits are cuddly and fun or they can be somewhat aloof. They will come to you when they want affection but may only want to lay by your side. One point, if you buy a purebred Brit, the breeder may suggest you do not let them wander outside. I would suggest this just to keep them safe, regardless of breed but that's due to having some outdoor TNR cats get hit by cars. Brits are wonderful companions and so handsome. Thanks for sharing Mochi on RU-vid 🙂
They are definitely wonderful. I kepe Mochi inside the house apart from letting him in the garden for his own safety. That's great that you owned 9 British Shorthair Cat's. Wow super experienced.
I have a bengal a black cat and a tuxedo cat.... All completely different. Last few weeks I have a British blue shorthair in my garden...... Making himself home through my cat flap and not once any of my cats have had an. Issue........ Taking him to get scanned.. Hopefully we find his parents....... If not, he's got the best home after his last home........ He's So relaxed and confident......
@@mochitheboy breaks my heart knowing he's lost and someone is missing him.......... I've rescued 10 cats in my lifetime and know what it feels like to miss your baby.....been brought up with cats for 35 years, nothing replaces the love and affection bond that you build with your pets...... And then another one comes along and melts my heart
@@Injectz may you be blessed and continue to love your pets. My dog passed away last year... I know how it feels to lose such a loving beautiful creation. Keep being kind and loving.
I had a husky, talk about shedding! But I loved him so much. Some of our intimate moments were grooming he loved it ❤ I couldn’t keep him(Takoda) after my stroke and I miss him terribly 😢😢😢
I cat sit a short British cat for six days and I was so sad after he left. Definitely therapeutic cat. I’m thinking getting one. Thank you for your video.
Thanks for the informative video! Do you happen to know how they get on with dogs or it depends if they have grown up with them? I LOVE Mochi what a cutie!
He’s so cute. I wanted a gray BSH, there’s something about gray cats I find appealing. Ended up getting a silver BSH and he is the love of my life ❤ They are really intelligent and I love how gentle they are. My kitten loves routine and he will be sitting at the door where I keep the wand toys behind to show me he’s waiting for playtime. If I’m falling behind on the next routine thing of the day he meows at me but is never overly loud or annoying about it. He likes his own space while sleeping (I think bc I made him sleep outside of my bedroom from ages 3 months to 5.5 months) so he’ll prefer to sleep on the chair in my room now. Recently I was having a nightmare in my sleep and he jumped from his chair to the bed to lay at my feet. I honestly wasn’t a cat person until I made a friend of a neighbour’s Siamese cat and having my own cat has far exceeded my expectations and broken previous misconceptions about cats that I had. That made me realize how empathetic cats are and it feels more special since they choose to give that affection not because they’ve been bred to like dogs.
Mine carts her wand toys with her everywhere she goes....Even takes them to bed when she sleeps with us which is every night,,,Then brings them back out in the morning..She drags them in her mouth and always chirps when she drops them to tell us
If all you know is dogs, be aware, cats are a different species! And very differerent in needs and behaviour. If you respect that difference they will respond and grow in their relationship with you. (One thing to note dogs wag their tails when happy, cats when not happy, and rubbing their fur the wrong way will be very uncomfortable to them and make them unhappy). This is a lovely cat. He is a cat. I'm sure you will develop that special connection with him some day as you grow together.
I love him, we have an amazing relationship. I lived with him in a room for 3 months during covid times basically without leaving from when he was a kitten... our bond is very special.
@@mochitheboy That's beautiful. And you will get even closer over the years - it's like a long marriage as you give and take and grow together. (My previous comment was for dog people who want a small dog, but for some reason get a cat instead, and expect it to behave like a dog! ). Dogs were bred to be our companions, but cats do it by their choice. They are both great, but different. And Tom cats are the very best of all!
@@kondition-kode-nineI got sad 😿 I’ve only had my kitten for around 3 months and I feel like we’ve already bonded so much. I’m the most alone physically I’ve ever been in my life and he’s the only thing that brings me such love, joy and laughter.
I didn’t realize how much I’d gotten attached to him until I spent the first night alone without him since I got him when he had to stay overnight at the vet
@@qazedc3 I'm sure your relationship and bond will only get stronger as the years go by, many, many years as you grow together. It's a beautiful thing.
We have two short hair brothers that we got from the animal shelter. They are real sweet calm friendly cats and they spend the whole day outside in the garden but they would never leave it. But be prepared for getting presents from your cat we have had a blue tit, mouse and squirrel so far😂
Do you work at home? If not how do you think the cat is being left alone. You didn't get two I noticed. He doesn't seem to be too vocal either. I was told that they are vocal. How about health issues? But I think you said this cat is fairly young. Less than two years I believe.
I work from home. My cat is a Champion breed with no health issues in the generations and he is very happy hanging out alone but also does come up to me when I am working quite often for attention. If you are not going to be home much, you probably should get them a friend.
I wonder does he disappears into the house and how do you find him? I have a stray that loves to come into my apartment for a quick feed and often roams about and if I were to take my eyes off of her she would just disappear.
Haha Mochi doesn't disappear. He does sometimes go an hide in the garden but he isn't really hiding, he is exploring. Aww it's awesome how stray cats come to your house.
@@mochitheboy Maybe “hiding” is too strong a word. I meant exploring around the house or in my case the apt. Once they go into that mode, it is often difficult for me to find it since it is a stray that sees me as a “cat butler”. Luckily my place is not that big so eventually I manage to find it in its usual places eg behind the TV cabinet or besides the sofa.
I’m owned by two British Shorthairs. I find they have a strange fascination with the bathroom, enjoy making slutty poses and will sometimes drive you absolutely crazy. They’re worth it though - they’re great cats!
No, I am not thinking of buying a phony exotic breed of cat, how about a shropshire longtail or a london kinkyear?` Can't believe you people can sell these cats as something special when there are thousands in shelters. Get a Grip
I find them rather ugly for a cat. Their ears in particular. So no shorthair for me. I got a black beautiful moggy with proper ears. But bless you and your cats (all sorts) nevertheless
@@montserratrincondelapena9226 beauty lies is the eye of the beholder. And some of those beholders have very strange preferences indeed. How you can call a cat with short legs and no ears 'beautiful' is beyond me. But hey . No harm done. Btw, 🐈⬛ are ... the best!
@@montserratrincondelapena9226 No sorry, but cats with short legs and without visible ears are a product of bad breeding by humans. It's not natural and not healthy. But these handicapped cats didn't make themselves so you better go and cuddle your beast. But please: don't breed any further... Educate yourself. .
