I know I’m not the first to say this but I think this is a timely reminder to put more consideration into putter choice as it’s the club we use most. I’ve been guilty of spending $600 to $700 Aus on a driver when most of the time I’ll only hit it 9 times in a round. Makes far more sense to invest in the very best putter you can afford but more importantly “the putter that suits your style”. Enjoying your videos and your style of presentation - keep them coming 👍🏻

I like the blast motion devise because it not only gives you a precise reading of face angel at impact bur also gives you backstroke, foward strake and tempo readings. The tempo reading is also very important in putting.

No, he said rule 1 don't be fooled when you test new putters in the shop, you'll concentrate better on your alignment because it looks different to your putter. Subsequently you might think it's better than your putter but that might not be the case.

@@Soul-TakerI never looked at it that way. Good point. I would like to take my putter to a fitter and have it adjusted. My putter isn’t worth much. It’s a low end blade, but I putt well with it. I would be horrified if people knew I spent $500 on a putter

I’ve used both...it depends on the speeds of the greens. If they run fast like an 11, then a blade putter. But for slower greens I like a mallet. I’ve been using the Taylormade Spider Manta, but keep a GM2 Never Compromise in reserve.

One other big thing to consider when using the parallel lines to test is make sure your putting on a flat surface so you know that its your strike and not the uneven ground causing the ball to roll out one way or another.

Good video Matt. I really enjoyed putting as well. I have a practice putting mat in my bedroom and in my golf room. I’m a pretty much a straight back and straight thru guy. My putter is a center line shaft Cleveland Huntington Beach model. My practice balls are two colored. one half one color the other half another, so you can get a nice true spinning looking roll. These work really well for chipping too if you turn it the other way, you can really see the backspin.

A person with good putting mechanics could use an old tree branch and putt well. That said I found your tips helpful not only in picking a new putter, but also could be used to help you putt better with the putter you have. I have an Odyssey Dual Force II that is over 20 years old and I love it. When my putting mechanics are on I sink a lot of putts with it.

I have collected a few putters over the years like most golfers, but this video really helped, and also saved me a ton of cash. I was going to spend $400 on a Scotty, but used your methods and found my existing W/S South Side gave me the best-aligned shot. I've gamed this the past few rounds and am saving 3/4 shots a round knowing that my putter fits my swing. Thanks for this 😁

I game a Taylormade Mullen 2 with the black copper finish. It’s between a blade and a mallet. I added a Fatso 5.0 (yes it’s too big for a LOT of people but I have big hands) and my putting game has really come alive. The insert took some getting used to but I’ve figured it out and can put the right pace on it almost every time. For me, the mallet putters have to much “tail weight” and tend to push the putter face open or closed. And the blade style putter tends to be too light and I don’t get a good feel for pace. Everyone’s different tho and that’s why there’s so many styles!

I got a putting fitting at a Club Champion recently. It was very informative. I learned that my back stroke was a severe arc and then I was compensating coming forward and was hitting the putt with an open face. He recommended a face balanced putter and the one I used improved my stroke dramatically. I've traded two old putters for another one online. I'm waiting for my new putter.

I have 18 putters mostly mallet, selected for their looks. Favorite is an odyssey Sabertooth, but I putt well with all because I use a straight back and forward stroke, most of the time with one hand and sometimes on one foot if I want to amaze. Use of 2 hands doubles your chance of error. Also make sure the putter is flat on the ground and the toe not tipped up, as the loft of the face can cause a drift to the left. Good tips from SG!😊

Writing down feelings is the best way to build a very composed effort with the golf club. There’s so much excitement about our efforts to be great at the game. Side note, you can’t think your way to greatness without being in great physical condition. But like in basketball it’s important to write down your feelings about what works and what doesn’t.

Arc putting is much harder. I went from a toe-down blade to a mallet putter - adopted a straight back, straight through style. I know immediately if I pushed or pulled a shot. Also, I was fit for my putter, (loft, lie and length adjusted) because I use it about 36 times a round (more than any other club in my bag).

I got fitted to a face balanced putter but couldn't hole nothing on the course. Tried 3 more different styles but still with no joy. I made a decision to buy a slight toe hang mallet and instantly started putting better. As i gained confidence i have reduced my putting strokes per round so for me it is all about what suits your eye and suits your stroke. Reading the greens and setting up correctly is the way forward for most people though.

I love my blade KJ Choi blade putter, i won a new mallett Odyssey White Ice a couple of weeks ago, highly rated i know, i played 2 rounds with it and put it on eBay, couldn't stand it, i rarely 3 putt, but did several times, plus a first for me, a 4 putt i felt the big mallet head made my eyes follow it instead of staying still, back to my KJ this morning, no 3 putts. I think putting is personal and all about what feels right to the individual.

Like you said, alot of poor putting comes from poor mechanics. I'm probably weird but I prefer center shafted balanced putters. Having said this, I still have all 5 that I've bought over the years.(including one left handed) I change my putter every other round. They are all slightly different: blade, mallet, hybrid style, completely different grips...but all center shafted. In doing this I get the new putter feel with better mechanics. In truth I would prefer to putt lefty, since I'm right eye dominate, I see the undulation better when standing over the ball. But I haven't gotten my stroke quite as smooth yet.

Interesting! I found a putting tip video saying that if you want to make the ball roll right away instead of it skidding the first few inches before it rolls is you set up probably an inch max from your ball so that you hit the ball on the upswing of the putter. It was kind of weird at first but it really works well for me!

U needed to show us with u using a mallet putter. No surprise the Scotty performed well, but that is your daily putter. Would have liked to see results w all putters u balanced to show weighting angles....Sharpie lines on balls, two parallel straight lines, great content and swing aids, not new to golfers..but shoes the value to go BACK to those swing aids periodically. Surprised u did not speak about wrong shaft length? New subscriber, because I believe u already have videos to answer my putting questions. I have a fang/mallet Odyssey White Hot Pro 7 w a SuperStroke Fatso grip...used it to calm down my hands/fingers from gripping to tensely....it worked for 2 yrs, now not so much. Wanted to try a blade putter, picked up an Odyssey White Steel #2 (which was in great condition minus a dry rotted Odyssey grip...) on a whim at a local charity sale for $2...figured was worth comparing my puts...regripped it w a std size Spider grip, just did not feel right, opted for SuperStroke Mid Slim 2.0....gonna regrip it tomorrow. Just had surgery so no bending for 4 more weeks...anxious to compare mallet to blade in the real world. I will use your putter balance method!

I built 7 putters to find the one that goes into the bag. I saw a huge variance in weight, balance, and even face material. It's always a personal choice, like any other club, but it's the most important club in the bag. Spending time figuring out which style, weight, LENGTH ( many putters are too short for the 6' player), and face type is best for your liking, is the only way to get it as close to right as possible. You cannot, in my mind, try a club for 1hour, and make a scientific decision. BTW, total investment in 7 clubs is less than 1 name brand putter, so money is not an issue in doing this... afterwards I'm selling the 5 that didn't make the cut...you do well in advising spending time on greens ,learning to putt.. it's where the most strokes are lost. Does my heart good seeing that platoon of putters !!

All good stuff. Clearly getting the face on the ball square at impact is the most important thing. Getting there involves some factors you didn’t go into: length of putter, lie angle, grip type/size. All of these impact your ability to get the face square at impact. For instance, if the shaft is too long, that will generally bring the toe off the ground (bad lie angle) and can create an optical illusion putting the face off line. Also another factor is loft. You can get it on line, but if the loft is wrong, the ball may not have a tight roll (bounce or hop). The lie needs to match you stroke.

Matt! Can you offer some advice for us lefties with finding a putter? I feel like every shop I got to only has a limited selection, so I feel more so like I am stuck with what is there vs what is best for me :(

Awesome videos. I am new to the game of golf. I was given a set of clubs that where manufactured between 1976 and 1978, I upgraded the irons to taylormade m4's and my putter is a ping mallet, the irons are working out fairly well (with the help of your videos) but the putter, not so well ,no matter how much I practice or ctry and change my stance or stroke I still hit the ball to the right of the cup every time I put ! So from watching this video I would say I have the wrong putter for me ! Any recommendations for me?

GREAT video. PUTTING is half the game , we can all hit 5 , 10, 20 feet putts .No power or speed needed. Great putting can be achieved with skill , equipment and practuce

I have been using the Oddessy white Hot blade putter since 2002. The only change I have made was going to the oversized grip which has helped to make my stroke better. I see no need to try a new putter since I avg 1.53 strokes per round. What I do need to work on is my practice, I don’t spend time lining the putts up and taking my time on the practice green.

You’re proof positive that practice/technique is far and away the biggest factor in lower scores.

Awesome advice! Blast Motion really helps! I use an 8’ putting mat with lines that help tremendously. Now if I could only get the speed right 🥴. Great video.
