Aretha Louise Franklin (/əˈriːθə/ ə-REE-thə; March 25, 1942 - August 16, 2018) was an American singer, songwriter and pianist. Referred to as the "Queen of Soul", she has twice been placed ninth in Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Artists of All Time". With global sales of over 75 million records, Franklin is one of the world's best-selling music artists.
As a child, Franklin was noticed for her gospel singing at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan, where her father C. L. Franklin was a minister. At the age of 18, she was signed as a recording artist for Columbia Records. While her career did not immediately flourish, Franklin found acclaim and commercial success once she signed with Atlantic Records in 1966. Hit songs such as "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)", "Respect", "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", "Chain of Fools", "Think", and "I Say a Little Prayer", propelled Franklin past her musical peers.
The singer appeared in the 1980 film The Blues Brothers before releasing the successful albums Jump to It (1982), Who's Zoomin' Who? (1985) and Aretha (1986) on the Arista label. In 1998, Franklin returned to the Top 40 with the Lauryn Hill-produced song "A Rose Is Still a Rose"; later, she released an album with the same name.
Franklin recorded 112 charted singles on the US Billboard charts, including 73 Hot 100 entries, 17 top-ten pop singles, 100 R&B entries and 20 number-one R&B singles. Besides the foregoing, the singer's well-known hits also include "Ain't No Way", "Call Me", "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)", "Spanish Harlem", "Rock Steady", "Day Dreaming", "Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)", "Something He Can Feel", "Jump to It", "Freeway of Love", "Who's Zoomin' Who" and "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" (a duet with George Michael). Franklin won 18 Grammy Awards,[4] including the first eight awards given for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance (1968-1975), a Grammy Awards Living Legend honor and Lifetime Achievement Award.
Franklin received numerous honors throughout her career. She was awarded the National Medal of Arts and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 1987, she became the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She also was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005 and into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2012. In 2010, Rolling Stone ranked Franklin number one on its list of the "100 Greatest Singers of All Time". In 2019, the Pulitzer Prize jury awarded the singer a posthumous special citation "for her indelible contribution to American music and culture for more than five decades". In 2020, Franklin was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame.
On August 13, 2018, Franklin was reported to be gravely ill at her home in Riverfront Towers, Detroit. She was under hospice care and surrounded by friends and family. Stevie Wonder, Jesse Jackson and former husband Glynn Turman visited her on her deathbed.[166] Franklin died at her home on August 16, 2018, aged 76. She was initially thought to have died without a will. The cause of death was a malignant pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor which is distinct from the most common form of pancreatic cancer. Numerous celebrities in the entertainment industry and politicians paid tribute to Franklin, including former U.S. President Barack Obama who said she "helped define the American experience".Civil rights activist and minister Al Sharpton called her a "civil rights and humanitarian icon".
A memorial service was held at New Bethel Baptist Church on August 19. Thousands then paid their respects during the public lying-in-repose at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. The August 31 Homegoing Service held at Greater Grace Temple in Detroit, included multiple tributes by celebrities, politicians, friends and family members and was streamed by some news agencies such as Fox News, CNN, The Word Network, BET and MSNBC. Among those who paid tribute to Aretha at the service were Ariana Grande, Bill Clinton, Rev. Al Sharpton, Louis Farrakhan, Faith Hill, Fantasia, the Clark Sisters, Ronald Isley, Angie Stone, Chaka Khan, Jennifer Holliday, Loretta Devine, Jennifer Hudson. Following a telecast procession up Seven Mile Road, Franklin was interred at Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit.

Crazy story quick story I have regarding Aretha Franklin. When I played in the CFL back in 1997 we were preparing for the season and we had a night off so we decided to hang out at a restaurant/bar that was located in downtown Toronto. We didn’t know Aretha Franklin was performing that night and we had a chance to listen to someone I grew up listening to, I was so excited about the performance that I called my college coach who was a fan of hers as well. But she was doing requests from the audience and I raised my hand up and asked her to sing “Ain’t No Way” and she asked me where I was from because my accent sounded familiar and I told her that I’m from Atlanta but born in Savannah. She said that she had a lot of friends and family members in Savannah and she asked me what was my last name and I told her and guess what? She knew my grandfather, she even mentioned his nickname and told me that his favorite song was “Ain’t No Way” so she started singing it and blew us away with her vocals. She inspired me to get into the music industry and now I’m a owner of a publishing house. Aretha Franklin father was a very popular minister C.L Franklin and my grandmother listened to his albums all the time when she babysat me in the late 70’s early 80’s and I remember when he died in 1984 because BET had a ceremonial presentation of his funeral and my grandmother cried when she watched it. My grandfather lived in Detroit back in the early 40’s and 50’s but returned to the south when his father died and he never left again. But I he was friends with Barry Gordy father as well, and my grandfather created his own nightclub and restaurant which was the first one owned by a black man in the city of Savannah. When Dr King came down to Savannah, he played pool at my grandfather establishment and Hosea Williams married my grandfather sister who was a waitress at my grandfather restaurant. And guess who performed at my grandfather establishment and I didn’t know about it? If you guess Aretha you’re absolutely right. My grandfather establishment was apart of the “Chitin Circuit” which is why she knew who my grandfather was 😉

I started loving Aretha Franklin when I was a child at the age of 8 years old when I heard her songs everywhere I went. Her songs played on radio stations, record players and so much more like a massive fever that had spread everywhere. My devotion and love will always burn eternally like a flame for Aretha Franklin. Today I am 63 years old soon in 4 months to be 64 years old. Losing her, was like losing my mother all over again. This is odd...how I found your video and 2 nights ago I had this vivid dream about Aretha Franklin performing at a venue amongst elite African American people. She had on a long flowy gown, her hair was short in a pixie style, she looked glamorous and happy. Well, I approached her, we hugged and I got emotional. I told her how much I loved her and her music. She smiled, acknowledged what I said and walked away. It seems so real and in the moment. So when we hugged in the dream...it seems Aretha and I were eye level. This is where it gets kinda creepy. When I woke up...I googled Ms. Aretha Franklin's height. She was 5' 5". We are the same exact height. I like to add an inch to my height. But my real measurements without shoes is 5'5". Thanks for the video.

I see you..as a native from southwest detroit I recognized u drove up the I-75 north..passed by that marathon oil refinery with that Detroit piston still painted on one of the marathon things. I grew up in that area that u passed. Although I live in Vegas..the D..will always be home to me. I remember her dad late reverend C.L Franklin..and it seems like it was yesterday..hearing he was attacked..and stayed in the hospital for a very long time before he passed away. Great job on this Scott..and thanks for all u do

I go to pay Respect to Aretha Franklin every August. I drive from Atlanta every August to have a great 2 weeks w my siblings. My oldest sister & I take flowers to Woodlawn on our visits. There are some greats buried there. From Rosa Parks to The Henry Ford family, David Ruffin and Berry Gordies family plots. A lot of Motown greats are there. You can go in the main office & ask for a map & a list of noteable ppl that have been laid to rest there. I had just left Detroit for Atlanta, two days before Ms Franklin passed. Thank you for sharing. 🕊

It’s too bad you were treated like that by the homeowner. You were right when you said that if you buy a celebrity house like that that you have to expect people to walk by and take pictures. She must’ve had bad experiences with some not so nice people and that’s why she treated you that way. Good video as usual Scott!
@sashineb.2114
@sashineb.2114 Год назад
Maybe the homeowner is just suspicious of people she doesn't know. Considering Aretha's father was shot in that house, maybe the new owner feels a bit unsafe at times. But what nonsense, saying it would cost $500 to take photos, especially from public sidewalks and roads.
@MzzPhattyPhatPhat

Perhaps she’s tired of showing her house for free while people like this guy makes money off of filming it?
@sashineb.2114
@sashineb.2114 Год назад
@@MzzPhattyPhatPhat But he was on public property. He was not on her property. Anybody can take a photo from a public location. With everybody today having smartphones, photos and videos are being taken all of the time, anywhere. She might as well get used to it, because Aretha was so beloved and people like to see the homes of famous people. Imagine what the Queen of England used to think when she had hundreds of tourists outside Buckingham Palace every day. 😀

Yeah all it takes is a few horrible people to ruin it for a lot, who knows what kind of harassment she may have had to deal with just because she bought a celebrities home

The Queen of Soul, Will always be greatly missed, And always Loved, R.I.H.P RiRi, I dropped everything to travel over 2,365 miles to my hometown to attend Aretha funeral, She was like a member of my family. I was going through chemo, but didn’t let that stop me. I love Aretha Franklin, Our Queen of Soul. She was one of a kind, A talented, Beautiful, Wonderful, Smart, Intelligent Woman, Hardworking, Multitalented Woman, A Musical Genius, A Rare exceptional, Intellectual, Powerhouse Of Talent, So Creative. No one can touch her Talent. But Jennifer Hudson & Cynthia Erivo did an Amazing Job Portraying Aretha. ARETHA FRANKLIN Was a GENUINE REALIST, FrFr. From: CAROL .C. And Family In Remembrance of ARETHA “ The QUEEN OF SOUL”
