Samuel Cook[4] (January 22, 1931 - December 11, 1964), known professionally as Sam Cooke, was an American singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur. Considered to be a pioneer and one of the most influential soul artists of all time, Cooke is commonly referred to as the "King of Soul" for his distinctive vocals, notable contributions to the genre and significance in popular music.
Cooke was born in Mississippi and later relocated to Chicago with his family at a young age, where he began singing as a child and joined the Soul Stirrers as lead singer in the 1950s. Going solo in 1957, Cooke released a string of hit songs, including "You Send Me", "A Change Is Gonna Come", "Cupid", "Wonderful World" (not to be confused with Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World), "Chain Gang", "Twistin' the Night Away", "Bring It On Home to Me", and "Good Times". During his eight-year career, Cooke released 29 singles that charted in the Top 40 of the Billboard Pop Singles chart, as well as 20 singles in the Top Ten of Billboard's Black Singles chart.
In 1964, Cooke was shot and killed by the manager of a motel in Los Angeles.[6] After an inquest and investigation, the courts ruled Cooke's death to be a justifiable homicide; his family has since questioned the circumstances of his death.
Cooke's pioneering contributions to soul music contributed to the rise of Aretha Franklin, Bobby Womack, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Billy Preston, and popularized the work of Otis Redding and James Brown. AllMusic biographer Bruce Eder wrote that Cooke was "the inventor of soul music", and possessed "an incredible natural singing voice and a smooth, effortless delivery that has never been surpassed".
The first funeral service for Cooke was held on December 18, 1964, at A. R. Leak Funeral Home in Chicago; 200,000 fans lined up for more than four city blocks to view his body. Afterward, his body was flown back to Los Angeles for a second service, at the Mount Sinai Baptist Church on December 19, which included a much-heralded performance of "The Angels Keep Watching Over Me" by Ray Charles, who stood in for a grief-stricken Bessie Griffin. Cooke was interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.

I didn't buy what the motel manager or the lady said. His family and him got screwed out of his music due to a shady partner and back door dealings. You covered the locations brilliantly and the story of what happened. Thank you Scott I've always loved Sam Cooke and it was sad what happened

He was killed after getting ripped off of a large some of money. Sounds like what we call today a setup. I wonder if the people who live in sam's old house know that its HIS house?

His Grandson was one of the teachers at my elementary school in the 90's who was indeed named after him. Showed proof that Sam was his grandfather. It blew my mind.

One conspiracy theory remains: Sam Cooke was not only a singer, he was a songwriter, managed other up-and-coming talent. He also did his OWN publishing! It is said he was approached by some syndicate people (unknown to him) asking if they could take over the publishing. He refused. Also, his clothing was stolen, he had in one shoe, and his fingernails were shredded. Movies have never been made regarding his life. There is fear, still, and threats to the family.

I’ve never believed the “justifiable homicide” story. My heart broke when you showed Lullabyland and all those children 😢 Sam’s voice is timeless and I hope is never forgotten. Great tribute!

Steve Perry of Journey fame has always spoken of how much Sam influenced him. If you listen, you can hear that influence in Steve's voice and style.

Sam Cook was a Groundbreaking Singer. He was Handsome, Well Dressed, Articulate, and a Gentleman. He had a Gift and a Talent that we want see the likes of again. The Ending of his Life was Tragic, and it’s very clear that there was foul play (At Work) in his Death. The likes of which will never be solved but God has brought it to it’s Proper Conclusions. For it is not How he Died but what he left behind that’s Important. Thank You for Sharing some of : The Life of Sam Cook. It was Well Done Respectfully. ❤️🙏🏻❤️

Lovely headstone. Made me want to cry listening to his life. Sadly different versions of his death by these women. Sounds like he was set up. Baby Vincent was so adorable and to hear of him passing in the pool - yes i did cry.

Wow! You bring out more to what happened to Sam Cooke. You don't hear the detailed story like this on most true crime documentaries on any of the cable channels on TV. That is why I enjoy watching your videos.
