There is a large bird of prey that remains unidentified. Possibly the largest living species, I saw a mated pair in Glasgow, MT one night in the early 1990s during an extreme cold snap. It's clear to me they came out of the arctic circle along with the extreme cold air. I worked at the radio station and heard a loud screech as I left work. One was perched on top of the railroad radio tower. It bent the fiberglass pole under its weight. the other was perched on top of the grain elevator. I knew they were big, larger than a bald eagle, and I feared for the cats I saw walking around that night, but I has no idea how large they were until the next morning when I saw a workman on the tower and was shocked at how small he looked. While I admit that they weren't side by side, I can say with confidence they were about the same size. The coloring of the eagles looked similar to prairie falcons; a sixty pound Prairie falcon, tawny with a white breast spotted with brown feathers.

You should try to do a video on the Cuban Giant Owl.

I also heard they may be also wrong with the look of the Haast eagle and that it may of been more closely related to the condor family and may of been bald and although had a large wingspan they looked short in wing for their body size to enable them to swoop down through forest and knock over moa.

Had the mega-sized prehistoric animals not gone extinct, I wonder how well man would have fared over time. I don't doubt that our species would have survived to evolve, but I do wonder about overall population and how the dangers that these animals presented would have affected our social norms.

well if you watched the video through I explained how the features present in this bird indicate it may be predatory and some of the details were a little speculative but it seems possible even though it may have still preferred to scavenge

I'm not too sure that climate change per se is why _Argentavis_ vanished. The change in prey species wouldn't have changed the dynamic - stealing kills from other, smaller predators and or dominating carcasses. Perhaps predation upon their own young by raptors? Kleptoparasitism - lions do it all the time. And I'd bet that proto-humans, australopithecines, _habilis and perhaps _erectus_ as well. A bunch of shrieking monkey-men throwing rocks and sticks would have been very unnerving for an animal such as a leopard.
@Peregrinus8375
@Peregrinus8375 6 месяцев назад
Well overall the exact cause of Argentavis's extinction is unknown as with the majority of these extinct birds and animals of the Cenozoic era, though Climatic change is commonly mentioned by paleontologists-sure they seem to have mostly scavenged and hunted small prey along with kleptoparasitism, but a change/reduction in the available prey in sufficient numbers and/or size to maintain a bird so large (gradually over time) is possible. then again, other factors such as disease outbreaks and competition with smaller/newly emerging carnivorous birds could also play a part though we really don't know for certain at this point.
@scottmccrea1873
@scottmccrea1873 6 месяцев назад
Well, it happens so often with mammals. There seems to be some inherent drive toward gigantism in many lineages. But that's almost always a dead end. It means domination of the econsystem for a relatively brief period of time and then...gone. If their emergence and dominance are based upon a number of interworking factors, then something that alters those factors would change the conditions that made it's dominance possible. Ergo, it was probably several things - much like the extinction even in North America. @@Peregrinus8375

@Peregrinus8375
@Peregrinus8375 6 месяцев назад
Did you even watch the video!? It is now believed that this bird did likely hunt more often than modern vultures as well as scavenge so no its not entirely misleading

@Peregrinus8375
@Peregrinus8375 6 месяцев назад
@@williamlocklear1283 true the feet aren't as powerful as an eagles but they did have a more sturdy bill than most modern vultures and their huge weight and size may have been sufficient enough to pin small animals, just slightly differently to the true raptorial birds
