I remembered watching this on tv, I recorded it on vhs. When england has the ball, their fans sing. Then argentina steals the ball their fans sing. It's probably the best match futbol atmosphere I've ever seen, both countries are cultured in futbol and the fans are crazy.
The one thing I find fascinating about this match was that while media will tell you that beckham was solely responsible for England losing, they forget to mention that the tie went to penalties after beckhams red card and no other goals were scored before then. Like is is beckhams fault that David batty missed his penalty. I mean come on now.
Argentina between era after Maradona and before Messi had got some "new" Maradona like players. In this match was my fav Ariel Ortega. Technically great but too selfish and mentally not strong (vide match against Netherlands). After World Cup 1998 he wasn't great again.
@7:01 The referee disagreed that it was a penalty, because who could imagine an Argentine deliberately handling the ball, or Jose Chamot breaking the rules! It's a bit of a strange posture to assume whilst jumping, one arm held ramrod straight in the direction of the ball...On the other hand, I slightly underrated Ortega in those days. He was, predictably, touted as the 'next Maradona', but he was a very good player in his own right, even if he didn't come near to the heights of Maradona's talent and exploits. He was instrumental in a lot of Argentina's attacks in this game. Also, Seaman was a bit unlucky not to save Batistuta's penalty (in normal time), he came close. It was a good game overall, a tight match with both teams producing their strongest performance of the tournament. I was derisive of Beckham at the time for getting sent off and this clip doesn't show what he actually did, an annoyed flick of his lower leg against Simeone, but it was shameful of Simeone to play act as he did, and Batistuta nodding at the red card decision as if it had been an egregious reaction to lightly tap Simeone - who had shoved into Beckham from behind - is preposterous.
I remember well the dive and the furious nodding at the sending off. "Quite right!" Cheating, basically. The ref behaved like a bit of a d*ck afterwards as well - the next time he refereed Beckham (for Man United) he was grinning like an idiot - "Yay, I made a bad decision and it ruined your life for a year & sent England out of the world cup"
Don't kick out at a player for no reason right in front of the ref and then expect no punishment. ''Lightly tap'' lol, you sound like a bitter Englishman.
Maradona era maradona poner a Ortega a ese nivel ....mmm nooo ortega buen jugador pero Diego Armando Maradona el 10 y no le pesaba nunca la camiseta de Argentina saludos desde Arica Chile
no it was a right call from de ref any sort of assault on any players n ref is a straight red card its been like this for years u must be sleeping or sumthing??

Look where the goalkeeper was when Ince struck the ball on his penalty! He’s nearly on the six yard line. What’s the point of having an official on the line when the goalkeeper can do that?
