A twisty, terrifying, pull-no-punches dive into madness, Hereditary's easily one of 2018's best horror films, and we're hyped for all of you to see it.
Before you do, though (or, hell, after you do), check out the following video interview we recently conducted with Hereditary director Ari Aster. He walks us through a number of horror films that inspired his own, and some of the titles he namechecks are kind of surprising.

You ever heard that saying “don’t judge a book by its cover”? lol. That applies to life dude! Ari makes great movies BTW. I like that whole occult approach to horror. After seeing "HEREDITARY" for the 1st time (I've seen it 5x now, HUGE fan) I felt like it was a horror version of "ORDINARY PEOPLE". One of the BEST scenes in "HEREDITARY" is the dinner scene. The rawness of the fight between mother & son after their horrific loss.

Yes, complete agreement, and it is nice to see that he indeed intended elements both of family drama and the horror genre. You could actually cut the horror out of the film and it would still be interesting. It would obviously be a very different movie, but it would still be an interesting movie. The rawness of the emotions in the dinner scene gets me every time I see it.

It's very interesting to me to see how the word 'influence' means here something that swings between the good and the bad. He has been influenced by things he loved and also by things that creeped him badly. I am still having nightmares in the middle of the night thinking about the naked man on the doorway and the way his face was lit. I never had such nightmares since the exorcist. And I am now 45yo. All the naked figures in and out of the shadows were creepy as hell. They were all fat too. haha
@allikitos
@allikitos 5 лет назад
There were those moments where the movie delivered straight up horror, like with the figures lurking in the shadows craving for a body host, and others, terrifyingly accurate occult symbolisms scattered throughout the whole movie, although those might not be felt by all of the audience because they can't interpret the meanings of the symbols, however, they are, to me, more haunting than the creepy cult members standing in the shadows. I also appreciate there was no heavy make up to the possessed, which I hate in most possession movies, both old and new ones. Possession doesn't turn the host into a boogeyman, it's the psyche and mentality that is supposed to be terrifying. It's a practise to scare audiences from another time. Hereditary was something fresh in every aspect.

I wish I was as passionate to make horror movies like him. I mean I have ideas but not sure it would work.

Reminder this is the dude that ended one of his movies with two main characters brutally dying a young kid becoming the body for a demon

Aster is the real deal and indeed bringing fresh air to the horror genre. When I was a kid and I saw that crucified Jesus under the stairs, I was traumatized.

I never saw The Shining as a comedy it freaked me out as a child. And yes Jack Torrence was already a violent crazy man ready to kill his family because it's revealed he was putting them in the hospita through violence way before the movie begins.

*Weekend at Bernie’s 2* is infinitely more horrifying than *The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover.*
