Aria from Diva - Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez

Fernandez sings the aria "Ebben? Ne andrò lontana", from Act I of Catalani's opera "La Wally." The piece is a haunting reverie on the theme of traveling alone and far from home. Catalani died in 1893 of consumption at the age of 39, only a year after the triumphant premiere of "La Wally" at La Scala.
This performance plays a prominent role in the 1981 French romantic thriller, "Diva" - and is an excerpt from the DVD. Roger Ebert, film critic for the Chicago Sun Times, rates the movie 5 stars out of 5.
This was one of the most frequently "favorited" videos on BestArts.
The opera, based on a German novel, has a libretto by the young Luigi Illica, who went on to collaborate on the texts for "La Boheme," "Tosca" and "Madama Butterfly." It tells of a wild, headstrong Swiss mountain girl who loves one local huntsman and is loved by another. Eventually she wins her true love, the pair embraces high in the Alps, an avalanche entombs the hero and she leaps after him to her snowy death.
The libretto for the opera is available (in Italian) at www.karadar.com...
A plot summary of the opera is available in English at www.spikesworld...

Those of us who saw this in the 1980's will never forget what a blast of colour and sleekness and chic and fun and danger this film exuded, all coming together with this scene. Time has not aged this film one bit because like very few movies, it is almost ahead of trends and fashion.

That 'feeling' was part of the cultural moment that was the 1980s. There was still vibrancy and challenge and rebelliousness in the air. I don't feel that today, in this new millennium culture. All I feel is mindless anger and defeatism. Movies go straight to Netflix. What's that about?! How much 'feeling' can you get from that?😶

I saw this at an art house in San Francisco. I thought it was unavailable in most US cities. It blew me away on many levels. Some scenes were like paintings, the bathtub and roller skates in the shadowy ballroom, that classic white car -- it had running boards right? -- in the dark pine woods near dawn, etc. Never had heard of La Wally, have never forgotten it.

Magnificent! She was an amazing singer but also showed real acting talent. In the movie, she showed a combination of imperiousness and vulnerability that really made the character tick. She seems to have fallen off the radar these days, probably just retired, as she'd be about 72 or 73 now.

About 12 years or so ago after seeing the movie Diva I wanted to see her perform live but I couldn't find any info on her on the Internet. I decided to email the metropolitan opera about her. I figured they might have info on her. I got a quick reply stating that she was scheduled to perform there about 2 years earlier but the performance was cancelled and they hadn't heard back from her. It seems she doesn't have any kind of site, sadly. I don't know why she didn't get to be as well known as Kathleen Battle. She is truly talented. Wilhelmenia made me an opera fan.

We'd listen to it with glass of wine on a beautiful summer evening. I love how the incomparable Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez gives the conductor the indication with a glance ONLY when she's ready.

Coincidentally, I was visiting Paris in the summer of 1980. During that stay, we walked through parts of this city several times in the late evenings and at night. I don't know what exactly the composer had in mind when he created "gorodish" and "promenade sentimentale", but to me this music will always bring back beautiful and melancholic memories firmly connected with this visit and the fact it is so long ago. To me, no other music can capture the atmosphere of a strange big city better. Quiet, with quite empty streets at nighttime, taking a big breathe, relaxing from the vibrant life during daytime. The coloring of the film fits this perfectly. And, of course, Wilhelmenia Fernandez is absolutely exceptional. I hope I can take this music with me when I leave this planet one day.
@SY-ok2dq
@SY-ok2dq 2 года назад
The Paris of 1980, of "Diva" is gone. I mean those places are still there, but the city has changed. And the story of "Diva" - the huge professional La Nagra recording machine, is ridiculously obsolete today, as are cassette tapes. But at least we can watch "Diva" to see it as it was then, in all its cinematic glory. At least you got to see and experience the city as it was. The composer, Vladimir Cosma, tried to compose a piece that would be like a new Erik Satie composition, in the style of the Gnossiennes. The promenade sentimentale scenes plus Cosma's music together, are just gorgeous, romantic, wistful and evocative. Wilhelmenia Fernandez radiates the star charisma, the beautiful voice with a regal beauty to match, that convinces you that Cynthia Hawkins is a powerhouse opera star. And that gown looks so elegant and gorgeous on her. I wonder if she got to keep it, or if someone else has it tucked away somewhere?

Woke up this morning with this gorgeous aria in my head. Gosh, I saw Diva 40+ years ago when it came out. Still one of my all time favorites. Gotta watch it again. Where has the time gone? I chuckle at the scene when she becomes frustrated and switches to English. ❤

In 1981 when the movie Diva was screened, this aria was everywhere, there is a God after-all.

Gorodish's words in "Diva" 1982 still see me through so many situations: 'You can't win them all'.

This movie made me want to move to Paris and pursue my dreams of being a director, writer and producer. Loved it! I spent a summer reading all the books in the series, and this is my favorite. Wish more movies were like this. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Her performance of this piece is phenomenal...very gifted, very talented...a true Diva! I love this movie also. It is very endearing some how...have been listening to this song over and over...just gets better each time....Awesome! I wish there were more youtube videos of her work as an Opera singer. The ones I've seen or equally as great! God Bless you Mrs. Fernandez-Smith. Thank you for sharing your gift with all of us.
