I don’t care about what anybody says, this man has helped continue to bring Power Pop and indie sensibilities to the forefront in a world that increasingly cares less and less about the intricate workings of good song craft. To write for himself first and have others resonate instead of writing for the people directly is so vastly different.

Ariel Pink and his band reminds me of Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. The sound and the vibe. Go listen to the record "'we're only in it for the money"
Kind of but also not. Zappa sounds didactic to me while Ariel is seductive. Ps. I see the Zappa stuff as a component of Ariel Pink's sound. Probably more important than I first thought. In fact I may be ready to review his discography. I liked this article: www.guitarworld.com/features/frank-zappa-perfectly-frank It might be possible to be the ideal listener for Ariel Pink though.
Dude, I've got into ariel's music when I listen to WHITE FRECKLES for the first time and my reaction was "I've never heard this Frank Zappa song, how is it possible? Its a cover? wtf?" He sounds ultra Zappa in that song.
This is how I want an album released - in a session like this.... almost every song is superior to the album version, and the vocals are amazing when they can hear themselves so better than a live performance. On top of that I suppose the songs are genius....
Yea, super performances. Usually bands have practiced songs from the album more and are better rehearsed, often even developing the song more than the album version. KEXP, KCRW, Levitation Sessions etc. are a few favorites. Growing up I think most people have this idea albums always sound better, very often because historically, live recordings are often recorded from some ones camcorder in the audience lol, reproducing a sound being blasted from a few huge speakers. And also because so many bands are drained of their artistic energy by mass-scale touring. As an adult I've spent nearly 15 years transitioning to a person who almost exclusively listens to these 'special' live performances -- special meaning when bands do them, it's often in their hayday and it also often comes out almost as a 2nd opportunity to write these songs they released before becoming perfectionists on them. When discovering new artists or music, I hardly get into albums anymore. And the more you're into experimental, raw or spontaneous musical art, generally the less desirable a formal album becomes for the appreciated person, anyway.
10:50 I've always had a love for weird falsetto vocals ever since I heard the mothers of invention. That way of singing just fills me with joy cuz its kind of funny but also rebellious sounding to me

I’ve said it before I’ll keep saying it. He is the most talented artist of his generation. Alongside War on Drugs this is a whole different level of composition. He’s the real deal and dgaf.
@@patriciofernandez2711 yea thats true. quite a few of the bands I like have turned out to have a front man that is an absolute twat. Still I love the music.
I've always wondered, does it not sound like other music? Because it sounds to me like it's a rip off of something, but I have no idea what. Alot of ariel's music gives me that feeling like its a rip off but I've never heard it before
I hate this generalization. LA is haven to some of the grimmest living situations and hardest hip hop and rock in the country. Freak folk pop is a big deal, sure. As it is in other parts of the states. It's just so off to state this is the sound of L.A. Nah
tho I feel the impulse bc there is shit all else. Ariel is just a fucked up stoner weirdo. He's no genius. He's nowhere even in the same galaxy as bowie (sorry mates)
Can someone help me find the studio live performance video where he's kind of lazily standing there, I think Dayzed Inn Daydreams is the last song they do.
what he does is so solid. i'd like to put my hand in the space, where the waves of this sound float. i dont expect vibrations. no, i expect a corpus..... it is so palpable. never felt this for music... i don't know what it is....there is something crazy in these noises... but i don't get it... i just love it.
Looks to be. Don’t know if it’s the exact model or anything but it looks similar to one I’ve used in a studio before. You can use it to play with effects and different mixing elements.
Figured it out! For the one or two who might care (i'm one), it's an Aria pro II Thorsound 300 from the 80s. Some really great Japanese guitars back in the day. That was one of 'em
+RYAN ZACHARY ORTIZ its a roland micro cube amp hes running his vox through it. and everyone elses too i think they all use the chorus on it and he throws it to the delay on certain lines.
