Ariens IKON X 42 Zero Turn Review

There is a safety switch which is pushed in by the chute or mulching piece being attached to the deck. I took the cover off and it wouldn't start. Put it back on, no problem. It takes only a minute with 2 easily accessible wingnuts and no tools. This mower starts up first crank each time and it is a joy to use. It also mows in reverse by putting the key to the reverse area after starting and pushing in the triangular button. It will stay in reverse mode until you turn it off. All in all, for my homeowner needs, I really like this mower-and at 70 bucks a cut here in Miami, it's already more than 1/3 paid for itself in a month.

Every "Stamped deck" mower we have owned rusts out in less than 5 years. The "Engineered All Welded " thick decks last over 20 years! The Kawasaki engine is the BEST on the market. The Ariens Brand is #1 in the United States and Best price for the VALUE!

I own a a Ariens Edge 42 inch, and though it has a few power problems (there’s a little delay to power, and the rear wheels like to tear holes into the ground when you turn zero) I love the thing. It seems extremely well made, cuts great, and is an extremely comfortable mower. Even with a smaller chair and no arm rests, it’s great. It feels like it almost flexes (in a good way), and rides sooo smooth.

One other point, the drive pulleys are not in correct height adjustment with each other in the right rear of the machine, easy fix,but if you don’t, it will shuck your belt. Riley’s small engines put out a good video on this topic, and also replacing the drive belt!

Thanks for featuring the slope cut! I need to know what the machine does when it's on a sideways grade like you showed at 5:15 so thanks! I've heard slopes are the achilles heel to zero turns as they tend to have the front end drift downwards but this slope was handled like nothing!

The best feature to me was shown in the thumbnail. You set closer to the ground I've got lots of fruit trees in my yard so that's a ++

I have the ariens edge 52 and it cut great, My wife beg me to stop cutting the grass. It got soo good to me that I cut my neighbors yard. LOL

I have the apex version of this which is more of a commercial style and I absolutely love the power and build

I'm about to grab the XD 42 kawi. Wish the deck was a bit more off centered like the 52 and 60 to the left for closer edging without rubbing your tires. The deck does stick out a little past wheels but the larger decks on this model stick alot further off center to the left for better edging.

I bought this mower a week ago. Mine does not have the hitch on the back. Is that an "accessory" you have to buy separately? A hitch would be nice to pull my yard cart, to pick up sticks, etc from the yard. Just used the mower once so far, and like it fine. I had a Husqvarna 52" lawn tractor which was a good mower for 13 years. This is my first zero turn mower.

Why would you prefer a stamped deck? And that dial deck adjustment is a fail waiting to happen

Nice review but how does it cut grass? I have a 5 year old Gravely ZT42 and the welding came undone in the front on both sides, with normal use, under an acre yard, and absolutely no rust. My gravely dealer called Gravely to see if they'd maybe cut a little bit of a break but, nope. Makes me leery of getting an other Gravely/Ariens product again. I know things don't last but the frame? and only 5 years? Do any of you know if Husquvarna is a good product?? I'll stay with Kawasaki engines for sure.

I'd hope for a fabricated deck instead of a stamped deck because they're more durable.

@RMSpeltz Farm - ReefDVMs ... I just got the Gravely ZTX42 (same co) quite similar if not identical. 22hp Kohler, 3blades, 2.8gal., (915255). This is just right for my ~10K sq.ft yard. I'm in S. Jersey & got it from a local dealer...tx/prep/del...$4089.13, ca$h deal out the door! I wasn't going to go >$5K or Big-Box (almost went for Troy-Bilt). Still have my push mower but hardly need it. Start w/string trimmer in tight spots then the machine. Never had 1 of these b/4, jerky @ 1st but I soon got the feel of it. I did good. No need 2spend big$$$ 4commercial-grade. DLR will svc if nec. #### Couple caveats/minor stuff: 1) only 1 key 2) no trap door to deck belts 3) no mat [$40 fm Grav], so I cut an old rubber doormat 2size : D 4) tarp, [$100 fm Grav, found 1 on amazon-$40. Minor stuff--great mach.

This review is nice, great job but i would take an Ariens Husler shit even a Cub over John Deer if you want to pay for shit lawn mowers pay an extra 300 bucks for the Name JD and colors green and yellow! just my opinion have a great day friends👍

I've been thinking about getting a new John Deere Z3 series but I don't know if are to good quality. Its between this one and a John Deere, I want a John Deere since I work at John Deere. But I also only want a twin blade deck, only thing i can compare a zero turn to is my early 2000 Murray rider 18.5hp 42in cut, and my dad's husquvarna 25hp 48in cut garden tractor class mower. I like the murray alot from the cut quality and how reliable its been the past 12 years of ownership. But the husquvarna I love its 25hp Kohler Command engine but it being a three blade deck it will shred belts every few lawns I cut. We keep the deck clean top and bottom and it has no excessive pulley wear to destroy belts. Am I just caught up on my thoughts of a three blade system because of that mower only? I only cut family yards, not a business.

You are not suppose to fill the tank up into the neck, only to the top of the tank!

You don't know what your talking about, Fabricated welded decks are way better than cheap stamp steel decks. I used to work for wright manufacturing production factory. (the wright stander) And the deck is 10 Gauge steel not 11 Gauge,

Why on earth would you use seafoam on anything? Throw that crap in the garbage.... Not being able to keep a Kubota running? What on earth were you doing wrong? Been around a lot of equipment from tiny little mowers that you refer to as green "beasts" to actual heavy equipment and Kubota has be some of the best stuff I've been around. From garden tractors, mowers, skid loaders, and even mini excavators.
