These videos are incredibly helpful for those of us living in some extreme challenging climates and soils. The videos are such a treat I'm beginning to get more excited to see a new one posted than when I see there's another episode of the British "Gardener's World" to watch. "Gardener's World" is a delight for those who love green and growing things, but the soil and climate conditions most presenters hail from are rarely to be found for those of us in low desert. I live in the African Sahel, so while I"m not truly low-desert (thank goodness, no caliche, though), Growing in the Garden is much more relevant to my gardening experience. There are NO extensive gardening videos to help those of us gardening in the Sahel. South Africa has some videos, but that climate is vastly different from the Sahel. Keep up the good work! Truly a delight and welcome aide.

Try spraying the plants with baking soda and dish soap formula. 1 gallon water, 2 tablespoons baking soda, and 2 tablespoons dish soap. I use one of those end of hose sprayers. I have sprayed all my plants, except the veggie garden. Spray in the sun down. Hope that helps. I got the tip from a good friend who’s big on gardening

This channel is so inspiring and always gives me hope, even in the middle of July in Arizona! But this year was BRUTAL. I lost nearly everything in the month of 110+ temps. I water daily, and my plants have gone from full and vibrant to suddenly toast in about 2 days time. It's so discouraging! I had a beautiful and thriving fruiting passion vine, and now it's completely dead. :( What am I doing wrong? Are others struggling right now? Everything in your garden always looks perfect, no matter the time of year. Thank you for the videos! Maybe someday I'll get there.

Thank you so much for this real-time tips on what to plant and plan for. Very helpful. I do have one question, which may sound silly, but I always hear gardeners talking about "adding" compost and "adding mulch" but I never hear any issues about taking anything out of the garden beds. How does that work? Do you ever have to take old soil out of the gardens to make room for new soil and compost?
@GrowingInTheGarden
@GrowingInTheGarden 4 года назад
Good question. The organic matter in healthy soil continues to break down and decompose. New organic matter needs to be added to keep the soil alive and decomposing. It’s amazing how far the beds go down each season. It’s important to fill the beds back to the top to give the roots as much room as possible each season.

This is very helpful, thank you for putting these videos together! I'm a new gardener who got a late start this spring, and it's confusing seeing the 'second summer' in the UofA extension guide but not mentioned anywhere else online. So many online guides say it's too hot to plant anything in July or August here, but the extension guide suggests squash, pepper, and tomato in July and August.
@GrowingInTheGarden
@GrowingInTheGarden 4 года назад
Glad it's helpful. Thanks for watching. Timing really is critical here in the low desert. I use the extension guide as a resource for my posts (modified a bit - based on my experience) and add a few things to it as well.

I took your advice for sunflowers and planted them around my beds in the soil. Thank you! I planted beans in late April an May. They didn't do well and I haven't gotten much of anything and most of them died. If I try them again starting in July will they make it through the heat? I did plant them in containers so maybe that's why they didn't do well? Getting a raised bed put in this week so I'm thinking of trying them in a bed as opposed to containers?
@GrowingInTheGarden
@GrowingInTheGarden 4 года назад
Raised beds would be better. The trick with containers (especially in the heat) is they heat up more and dry out more quickly. I just planted beans this week in my raised beds as well.

Thank you so much for these videos on what to do each month. I'm trying to work out a routine and these should help a lot. :) I finally started using mulch in my raised beds. You say to add compost this month, but is it ok to add compost over the wood chip mulch, or do I have to scoop all the mulch off first, then put it back on top of the compost? I ask because I've read that you shouldn't mix the mulch into the soil because as it decomposes it'll rob the soil of nitrogen.
@GrowingInTheGarden

I have a serious question for you. I live in Mesa and have high bicarbonate levels in my 8+ pH hose water. I have horrible success every summer no matter what I try. I was thinking of injecting sulfuric acid into my water to lower the pH to 5.5 or so in order to release the barcarbonates to Co2. I know bicarbonates bond/tie up to mag, cal, zinc and a few others. I have bad chlorosis every summer and end up only feeding aphids and mites. I am using shade cloth and it is keeping plants alive, but they are still struggling. I just tried Iron sulfate and some other things I found out in a soil sample but no luck so far. I think It's this hose water as in Winter I do much much better when it finally rains. What are your thoughts for this dry climate with no humidity? Thanks
@GrowingInTheGarden

The water this time of year is very hard on plants. As for amendments for lowering the , I don't have experience with that. I know some people use filters to help with city water. I wish I had more help for you, I'm sorry.
