Thank you so much for highlighting Arizona in a very fun video. I just wanted to share with you that I rode to Douglas Az and picked up US 191 spur that begins at the International Border and rode it north to the routes end at the International Border with Canada in Morgan MT and crossed into Saskatchewan at Monchy.
US 191 is probably the greatest motorcycle road that nobody knows about. I think we saw 6 cars the entire ride....and a cow in the road....and some elk crossing the road. We rode SB to Morenci. When I was done, I was just exhausted from all the shifts. But it was totally worth it. I had a smile stuck on my face.
Great , beautiful views, gorgeous bike, high styling adventuring, wonderful host, and perhaps one of the best, creative titles for a video I've seen in a long while😛! Ride safe out there! Glad you enjoyed your pie!
Me and a Brother rode it a couple years back. Raining the entire way in approx 40°-50°, had a steak dinner and stayed at Hannagan Meadow Lodge. I saw 2 Mexican Wolves that crossed the road right in front of me about 7 miles north of the mine, what a road in the rain! Just beautiful. Amazing video greatly appreciate your work. Ride on! 👊🏍️
I’m so excited to find your channel!!! At 42, I’ve only been riding for 6 months but your videos are inspiring me to see (and eat) what the US actually has to offer! I’m planning for May 2022 and am thinking The Grand Canyon from South Carolina. Thank you!
@@meon3wheels Oh, wow! That's pretty neat. I dont know much about that area other than what I've read on google regarding the mine's history and saw while riding through. I feel like it would've been really interesting to see it "back in the day"!
@@ridetofood My husband just retired from the mine last year. You can find pictures of the old town of Morenci on RU-vid. It was unique. BTW, we love to watch your videos!!!
Awesome ride!! Yes, I would ride 500 miles for pie, especially a pie that looks as good as that one!! I've been up to Morenci mine a few times, work related, but never had the pleasure of going there on my bike. I hope to do that now that I'm retired and have the time. I agree that roads can be very intense and certainly require due diligence while riding!
Niiiice! If I had any advice on that, I'd say be sure to do the second stint of it in the daylight. once you start to climb up out of western AZ and into the mountains of eastern AZ, the deer and other animals get a bit bigger and more frequent at night. That'll be a fun trip! :)
Me and six friends rode Devil's Highway a few years back, and once you're up on the mountain the scenery is beautiful all the way to Alpine. Still haven't made it to Pie Town but it's on the list!
Agreed! Definitely check out PieTown if you ever get the chance. There isn't much there other than pie and a free campground, but, that's a great combo if you ask me! haha. thanks for watching! :)
I really enjoy your tone and pace for the narrative portion. You made feel like even a chili cheese burrito from Taco Bell could be worth a full day ride! 🍺
Great video! The wife I and I have ridden that many times. HWY 180 just over into New Mexico that parallels 191 is in MUCH better condition and is a beautiful ride as well! Ride safe and eat well! 🏍👍🏻🇺🇸
I knew nothing of this road until I drove it as part of an off the cuff Ironbutt ride the end of the first week in November. I drove south thru Arizona's High Country and Grand Canyon just ahead of a winter storm two days before. I headed east to the state line and then turned north to go back to Durango, CO. My friend to whom I was staying informed me that the winter storm was moving into their area and that I might need to get a room in Farmington, NM because the pass into Durango might be icy. Neither one of us knew anything about this road and assumed it was similar to the parallel road in NM we drove a few days earlier. The sun had already set when I got to Clayton. My GPS had gone crazy as I drove through the copper mine. Apparently they moved the road. Shortly after that I entered the Apache National Forest and immediately started my assent into total darkness. I have auxiliary flood lights and accent lights on my bike so I could see the road pretty good. After a few curves I saw what I though was a single snowflake. A quick check of the bikes thermometer showed it to be in the mid 40's and the road was dry. I reasoned that the flake had to have been blown off one of the surrounding mountain tops. As I continued up the grade, the snow got heaver. I checked and the temp was still in the 40's. I passed a SUV going in the other direction. I got around to the other side of the ridge and now I knew it was snowing because the snow was coming from my right and the mountain was to my left. The temp had dropped to the low 40's. 43 if I remember correctly. I finally started to descend and the temp was 39. After a short decent the road started going up hill again. I went up and up and the snow started to stick to the pine needles that had blown onto the road surface. It was still above freezing. I the road started to descend again. It was now 30 degrees. The snow started to stick. I had slowed to where the engine was barely pulling me forward in 1st gear. Even at that speed I had to dodge animals running across the road in front of me. The temp was in the mid 20's and unbelievably the road once again started to ascend. Another vehicle passed me going the other direction. I stayed in the powder snow and continued my trek up this road. I reached a spot in the road where it looked like several vehicles had turned around and traveled in the same directions as I was traveling. The bad news was that they messed up the powder snow and ice had formed where their tire tracks were. I switch my travels to the edge of the road where their tracks weren't. I had to stop and duck walk my bike across the icy center a few times to stay in the powder. My front tire eventually locked up with ice and down I went. I was able to call 911 and a passerby helped me pick my bike up and put it on it's kickstand. I got it started but it didn't go anywhere because the front wheel was frozen. I took the front part of the front fender off and removed the ice but as I was looking to take the rear part of the front fender I could feel the heat coming off the radiator so I wrapped my rain gear around the front of the bike and it took about an hour for the ice to melt. By this time the local Sheriff Deputy arrived on scene it was down to 8F. He escorted me up and over the summit which was over 91K feet to Hannagan Meadow Lodge. What a nice place. I stayed there until the road was cleared of ice and drove on to Durango. A few day later, I drove US 191 again on my way home. If you decide to travel this road make sure you are topped off because there isn't any services.
Another Awesome Video. We got got back from a motorcycle trip to Yellowstone. We got to see a grizzly eating a bison carcass. A trip that was inspired by you. Thank you!
I just did Devils Highway 4 weeks ago and was not that impressed. I’ve been wanting to do it for the last 40 year and finally did the loop in one day, Phx, Sanford, Eager, Payson and back home. 542 mile loop. The road is rough and torn up pretty bad. The run from Morenci to Hannigan Meadow is 2 hrs of under 25mph. After Hannigan Meadow the road gets really smooth and more high speed bends and corner. 30-40 min of 50-60mph is really nice. If you really want a nice road to take in AZ, take 89 into Prescott or 89a into Jerome. Much nicer roads.
I wish i was young again all my adventures are now just a memory in my mind never to be repeated. But From watching your video i made the right choice in Alpine at a fork in the road by going to Silver City .
Stunning video & filming! We Go hiking up KP Cienega - Apache trail - but seeing the view from the "back of the bike" - is AMAZING! Many thx! Enjoy Everyone! x
Very cool I just found your channel today because flip na mentioned you, ride to food anyway excellent channel hope you keep making content I know it takes a lot of work but your doing Good 👍 I have a V Twin cruiser but recently switched to a Triumph Tiger adventure bike yes I’m getting old I know LOL oh but I still have the V Twin as well 🤪
It's funny that some of the most awesome scenery in your video were probably times that you were "white knuckled" while riding. The no guard rail parts would have had me riding at a snails pace. Godspeed
Loved your video! I grew up in the area, and frequently camped off of 191 near Hannigan Meadow. Now we go up that way to get our Christmas trees! Such a fun place!
Thanks for the memories ! My very favorite ride of all tmie ,I've riden 191 north to Alpine then over to NM to go south through Glenwood then 78 back to AZ . Very nice ! But not for beginner's lol.
You did have pie at the original pie place in Pie Town. The original is called the Pie-O-Neer just 1/4 mile east of where you stopped. Which I think is a good thing. Every time I pass through Pie Town I stop for pie. Last year I stopped in and the pie was not very good, this year the pie was a little better but every time I stop they do not have apple pie. The Pie-O-Neer changed hands a few years ago and since then the pies have taken a step down in quality. Thanks for the video.
I loved this ride many years ago (not so many tar-snakes??) and arrived at the Morenci mine after dark and in a thick fog (low cloud). Dipping into a series of sharp downhill turns in a cloud in the dark was more than my previous experience had prepared me for. Going NOBO in daylight looks way more promising.
That was my fav ride when living in AZ from 97-03. Took many trips up there from Gilbert on multiple bikes (BMW R1100GS, Honda VFR800, Honda CBR929RR) and with multiple friends staying at Alpine most of the time. The food in Alpine was always a bummer though lol...
haha! yeah, I would do that entire ride all over again to eat there, except next time i'll call ahead so I can get real food ordered before the kitchen closes. hah! thanks for watching :)
Pie town is an interesting place. We spent about 2 hours there looking around and talking to the volunteer fireman and eating pie!! I had pear pie!!!! WOW!! AMAZING!!!!
I still live in Phx, and I have ridden and camped off 191. Great views for sure. One February I was in my car heading west from Socorro N.M., a snow storm hit and I could not see the lines in the road. Finally stopped in Pie town to sleep in my car. Man it was cold! At sunup the snow had stopped thank God.
Did you stay in one of the campgrounds or did you go full dispersed? There’s so much room to camp up there! ...bears and mountain lions definitely crossed my mind more than once though 😅🤣 yeah...I can’t imagine attempting that road in the later winter/early spring with the snowfall. I’m sure they see quite a bit of snow up there!
I just rode the Coronado Trail scenic byway yesterday (North to South), and you weren’t kidding - this was an incredibly technical ride. Beautiful, but technical. Road maintenance is poor, gravel and rocks on the road, tar snakes that grabbed my tires, gouges in the road, especially in the turns, and animals on or by the road (including encountering wild horses) all made for 2.5 hours of a physical and mental endurance challenge. Incredible scenery (for my pillion rider, not me) though. 100% worth it to do the ride at least once. For anyone contemplating this ride, you need to have really worked on low-speed maneuver and obstacle avoidance skills before heading up there.
I'm riding to Alpine on Friday. First time going "up" 191. I've ridden south a few times previously. Looking forward to the "better" direction. You had my mouth watering for pie! I'm heading to Boulder the following week and stopping off in NM at a friend's. Was looking forward to grabbing a pie. Unfortunately, I'm riding on Wednesday and according to their website they're closed Tues and Wed... Maybe on the way back to Mesa. Keep it rubber side down.
Nice! Hope the ride was a blast! Yeah, their days of operation are a little finicky but, everyone's gotta have a day off, right? haha. Hopefully you'll be able to make it out there on the next trek!
This is my favorite road in the entire United States. I’ve never seen a ‘Tube vid on it, never seen it mentioned in a forum (besides me). Amazing place, and Hannagan’s Meadow is a great place to spend the night along the way.
My Brother, me and like 6 other friends we ride that highway. From El Paso texas to Springerville AZ we spend the night there. The next day we rode from Springerville back to El Paso via devil's highway. Right before the morency mines my brother went down a cliff, luckily he jumped out of the bike and was able to grab himself from some branches and not slide all the way down the cliff. Thank God he was ok. If anyone it's going to do that ride highly recommend to go at the speed posted on the signs. Not for the unexpireance riders!! Be safe and keep enjoying the American roads.
That look so nice and the road look like something that you don't drive at 65 or 70 mph, take your time driving it and good that you got the full pie so you eat a little than and have the other half for supper or breakfast, take care and ride safe lot of nut out on the road.
Great Video, parts of the Devils' Highway would make my butt pucker, but the scenery looked great. If you take too big of a bite, that just means whatever you're eating is that good. Thanks
Wow ! Now that’s a ride . A very interesting route that I’m not familiar with. . From Phoenix I’ve gone to Globe then headed north on a beautiful road . I think it’s 60 which goes up to Snowflake area and I’ve gone into New Mexico from there . . Really enjoyed your ride . Enjoy Taos . I was there about five years ago. Beautiful area . May I suggest while in that area go visit Taos Ski area . You don’t actually have to go to the ski area it’s just a beautiful scenic drive towards it . You’ll be glad you did if you haven’t been there before.
Highway 60 from globe is awesome! Goes through the Salt River Canyon. And that ride through Taos is beautiful as well. I go there a few times a year to see friends and family. :)
Tar snakes and loose gravel oh my!! That road looked nuts, then it seem to turn into a goat trail! appreciate your content, so cool learning about the areas you are riding through. Thank you
