I feel like a lot of people don’t know this but when using a glider if you hit the ground at a running angle you go super fast and then when you take off again you go insanely fast (the fast takeoff is kinda tricky to get but it’s very noticeable when you do)

When you are using the Tropeo hold spacebar when the green arrows appear in the bottom right corner, it allows drafting. You can also do it behind other dinos when you see the air deflecting off of their wings.

For all the people wondering where the Rock Drake would stack up, I did this same exact test and got to the rock in 7.2 seconds, and all the way back in just under 16 seconds.

Oh, also, tropeo has a diving boost too, but the momentum doesn't carry over to straight flight like the griffing, or even swooping upward like the owl. Tropeo also gets a drafting boost from other flyers being nearby.

I wanna see this with the managarmr and rock drake included

Do the test again but use a measured line of like pillars or ceiling to keep you flying on the same path each time. In a count of seconds slight path variation could add up to make a difference in your results.

It should be noted that the speed buff is only on Tropical Crystal Wyverns (not on Ember or Blood). The buff that it gains is the Hydrated buff and works the same as on a Spino. Touching any water that causes the swim animation on a character (even while flying, say just brushing the water with it's talons) Grants it a 20% movement speed boost as long as it remains touching water or for 30 seconds after it no longer is. But the buff also gives it sharper turning, 15% more melee damage (which does effect it's breath attack), and 25% more health. The Tropical Crystal Wyvern can also drape damn near half it's body in swimmable water before it dismounts the player. When it dismounts you over water it's fairly easy to remount and keep going, given that it dismounts you as standing atop it. As long as you let go of pressing forward reflexively when you accidentally dismount (so you don't run up it's neck, off it's head and into the water). Even if you mess up and end up running off it into the water when dismounted, It usually will have some large portion of it draped in the water, so it's really easy to get that "ride" prompt before even breaking waters surface. This actually makes it really good for getting underwater drops, as you can park right over the drops, dive down, grab them and be back on your flyer before surfacing. Functionally the constant refreshing of the buff is like long shallow dive bombing. It takes practice to get good at. But when well practiced and on the right map (The Center and Crystal Isles or ideal maps for it. The Center even has entire areas where the buff is always active) this thing is the fastest flyer. It can outpace a tropeo with that buff. On a PvP map it can even make the tropeo effectively slower as it's breath attack does both ticks of health and stamina drain and can be fired at full speed. So in a race you can cheat a little, blast a tropeo while passing it and ensure it doesn't have the stam to catch up when you loose your buff.

U can speed glitch on a snow owl tho to get a very large boost of speed

i use tropical wyverns for everything other than farming at this point, they outrun anything and are so easy to tame even on official

The Owl hands down does not have the same conservation of energy as the Griffin. It's MUCH worse on the owl, I have tested this. However the Owl slaps the Griffin in strait flight no dives.

You also forgot the tropeognathus has the speed boost ability that increases speed considerably when holding the jump button when the status affect appears on the bottom right. You can see it here in the video as it appears as a wing icon. Idk what causes this affect but it seems to be location based as while playing on crystal isles it always activates in the griffin trench.

Ok...so if you're going to include gasbags you should probably include the managarmr and rockdrake. It would also be great to see a race between the top 3 flyers + a player in full TEK armor and the new hoverskiff. You can't really say what's the fastest until you've tested it all 😋

the 20 dislikes are the other creatures that can fly or technically fly like the drake, mana and argy that werent added to the speed test

Properly controlled. The gasbags should be the fastest here. The key is to angle it low and hit the ground before the return trip. Also, unlike the other fliers, you can level speed on a gasbags. Plus, you can take a gasbags to aberration zones. It is the most versatile and fastest mount here.

This is moderately unfair to the gasbag, since of those tames it is able to increase its speed if you put points in it, thus the basic speed isn't op.

Like others have said, snow owl and Griffen both can do a running take off move which is difficult, but insanely fast. Also why no.. is it called magmar, the ice one. If you included the rocket bird it should count too.

Pro tip i discoverd: if you fly up a bit with the snow owl, then dive straight down and barely land on the ground, the owl will get an high speed buff for like 2 seckonds, id you start flying right about getting this buff, you will fly damn fast, then you just fly up again with the buff and with a bit of training, you can get super fast

Rock drake, he can even be used on Genesis.

If this test was performed over a longer distance (like most flights you take in ARK), the Griffin would perform far better. It takes a little while to gain altitude, but then once you have that, their dive bomb speed is faster than anything else, and that makes every subsequent dive bomb easier to get - Wyvern only appear better in a short test like this because they have nearly instant acceleration: their top speed is far less than the Griffin. And by requiring a 180 in the test, Tropeos get a clear advantage. Over a long distance they might be better (especially if you use utilize their drafting mechanic) but they cost gasoline to keep up.

Of course it depends on how you use your level-up points. If one is just for travel speed put all of the points in that.

i still think that the fastest way to move around is a rockdrake, also bc it wont kick u off if u have to land on water, it's as strong as a wyvern, but can carry more, u lose the posibility to carry another dino but cryopods exists so

Liking purely because of the Peter griffin laugh. Made me straight up punch my desk

with the owl if you pull up and just touch the ground it will auto land and then you immediately hit space it will give you a massive boost.

Snow Owl with 100% imprint is faster. Both it and the Griffin will reach its full potential if you can dive bomb at an angle at the ground so they run on the ground then you immediately take off and get an insane speed boost. This is a fun glitch or exploit that both creatures have. The Owl is one of my favorite creatures overall and to steal Wyvern Eggs with as it can heal itself and even you if you get hit with a Poison Wyvern Attack. I have 500 health so no Poison Wyverns can one hit kill be and then I just heal so I no longer need to wear a mask when I go into the trench.

The snow owl if you touch The ground it does a fast walking animation and if you press fly it has a huge burst of speed

Update version for gen 2? I'm curious how the bloodstalker would compare and if anything else would compare

Oooo someone just gave me a tropical crystal wyvern on official, and the speed boost from touching water only last 30 seconds.

I think the Phoenix and the divers are gonna be the best for long term travel (aside from Trope) among this list.

I consider the managarmer in the flyer category and someone that knows how to use it well can out class the others
