This week we’re having a look at the straight leg by ARKET. This is a jean that has been recommended to me by a few people and if you have the time to google “the best jeans 2021” usually this one makes an appearance.
Hi I’m Erin and welcome to the Bad Denim Review where we order and try on jeans for you.

They’ve kept it simple and straightforward which is great and can be deceptively difficult to nail when designing jeans. Nice and clean, no whiskers or abrasion or other simulated wear.
I ordered it in a few washes, the light blue, dark blue and black and I also wanted to have a look at the regular and cropped length.
So firstly, the fabric is great on all of the jeans. It’s nice and substantial, both the stretch and the non-stretch have a very similar signature meatiness and substance. The hand feel is perfect too, nice and dry.
Should we try it on?
So the regular length doesn’t work for me, let’s have a look at the cropped.
Nice leg length, at a 26” inseam it’s a bit shorter than I usually go so these do feel cropped not just swinging barely above the shoe. But it’s not too short, just intentionally cropped.
They’ve got a traditional felled inseam, which can create the issue that we’re seeing here a tiny bit, see how the hem is pulling up a little inside the leg. They could have remedied that by either switching to a mock felled seam or adding a bit into the seam on the pattern.
But overall this is hands down the best high-street jean I have seen. At £59 it is an absolute bargain and the fabric they have used make it feel from a higher price bracket. The trims are subtle and not overly branded. They’ve used a classic style of rivet that you don’t see too much, the underpin presses through the top piece pushing a tiny bit of fabric through and is the way that all rivets used to be. Really nice heritage jeans detail and usually something you just see on men’s selvedge purist brands nowadays.
The top block is nice and square on this, I would say they have referenced the mother of all straight legs, the 501 as their inspiration for this jean. The fit is lovely and this is 100% an everyday jean.
The black has a tiny bit of stretch in it for that ease of wear but it is constructed and has the look of a non-stretch fabric.
They also come in the light blue wash which I would strongly recommend, it’s a non-stretch so a bit less comfortable but I suppose it depends on what you’re up to in your life. I’m either actively running after kids or sitting on a chair exhausted so I want a tiny bit of stretch.
So am I going to keep this jean? Yes, yes and yes - it is a great pair of jeans, it’ll go with everything and the length feels perfect for the impending summer. These have clearly been designed by a denim purist and they’ve packed quite a punch into a tiny price tag. I would strongly recommend you check these out for yourself so I’ve put a link below.

Arket stopped shipping to the US 😭😭 is there another brand that’s comparable? More expensive is fine too.

Hi! Thanks so much for watching. Have you checked out Everlane, Reformation or Madewell? I think they’re pretty on-par with ARKET.

I agree in my experience Everlane does run a bit small

Could you recommend a premium jean for an apple-shaped size 16W? I love Agolde, but they do not cut for plus sizes. I have been looking for a jean with a long zipper (to combat camel toe!) and great pockets. They are so hard to find!

Hi Kristine! Thanks so much for watching, have you tried Madewell Curvy? They have a great cut that doesn’t gape and loads of washes and fits. What country are you in? X
