Oh, heavenly days! I've listened to Anna Netrebko, Joyce DiDonato, Renee Fleming, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Jessye Norman (which had always been my favorite version) sing this song prior to hearing this and the studio recording from the same year. This is by far my new favorite rendition of the stunning song. Such grace, such control and she makes it sound so easy.
For heaven's sake, PLEASE IDENTIFY THE SUPERB PIANIST HERE! There would be no performance of this without him!!! How ignorant and disrespectful can you be?
Perfectly stated, my friend! She seemed to have no ego at all, offering herself as a transparent conduit for the composer's thoughts to be transmitted directly to the listener. Angelic is the word, all right.
Yes Arleen ...I never forget your "Aus Liebe will mein Heiland sterben" (Matthew Passion) in Amsterdam Concert Gebouw... I never in my life was so touched🌈 See you back in heaven😘
Almost certain it is Irwin Gage. Two of the more celebrated recordings they have done are the one they did of Strauss & Wolf songs for CBS Masterworks and the subequent & stunning Wolf recording on Hyperion just before she succumed to cancer. His playing has always oozed humanity.
I know! It's like she's lip syncing. It's all in the breath control and glottal closure. Masterful. I've never seen this in anyone except Julie Andrews. (Yes, I said Julie Andrews.)
I do not know why in the concerts, there is always someone who is coughing equal to a tuberculosis person and could cough lower or indoors. Arleen Auger was a " Angel " of music and sang with her soul associated with technical perfection in the voice she possessed and this song of Strauss in her voice makes me cry a lot and pity that she passed away very early. #RestInPeaceArleenAuger
What a profound interpretation that came from her heart. I loved the evenness of her soprano tone complemented by a poetic sound from the pianist. Indeed a magical combination.
Herrgott im Himmel! When I heard Jonas Kaufmann sing this live in 2011 at Zellerbach Hall at UC Berkeley, I thought I would never hear it so beautifully sung. Eyes closed, tears rolling down my cheeks. Jonas, get in line! Behind Arleen!
Do you also know Barbara Bonney singing this song? More tears...just beautiful. There is so much love coming from those singers. Just what I need right now ;-) Music is the healer!
Strauss...what a nasty way to treat singers. Having to creep gingerly into the song after the interminable 1 minute intro (1/4 of the piece). Most all singers--no matter how famous they are--sound like hell on those first tenuous notes. I think Arleen Auger does it better than almost anyone.
Indeed it is the pianist that sets the tone of the performance she can sing "nicely" because she doesn't have to give a moments thought to the accompaniment that is played so beautifully.
It's always odd to me to hear this Lied sung by a woman. The author of the poem wrote it as a love song one man sings to another, and I always have a man in my mind's eye when I hear it. Auger is lovely, but Fischer-Dieskau does for me.
I have yet to hear a bass-baritone who can approach his rich tone, musicality and ability to convey the emotion of the music to the listener. No one comes close! I would have loved to hear him in a quartet with Auger, Hunt Lieberson, and a tenor as yet to be determined. Any suggestions?
@@brookeggleston9314 I was always partial to Anthony Rolfe Johnson, but if we're talking ultimate Dream Team, the only one who fits the bill is Fritz Wunderlich.
