@@ivancorreia602 Dude, what are you talking about? Gigueiredo, Sterling, Volkanovski and Islam all started their martial arts in wrestling. E.g. Volkanovski was national wrestling champion before transitioning to rugby. You really should read their bio before commenting. The other 4 champs are strikers though.
@theemperorcharlemagne

@@kallepikku4991 either way, the man is showing unbelievable ignorance. What is Sambo? Sambo is a mix of Catch Wrestling and Judo. And in MMA it’s no-gi and therefore a lot more Catch than Judo. And as far as most of the strikers on this list goes, they’re lucky to have avoided good submission wrestlers.

I like how the interviewer immediately called bullshit on the "strength is nothing" myth in grappling. The truth is when you roll, the stronger you are the sloppier your techniques can be and you still win. Strength is usually only overcome with a large technical advantage, whereas a small strength advantage will produce the same result
@kaliyuga93
@kaliyuga93 5 лет назад
Patrick Boebel a smaller guy also has to be tough to take the pressure that is going to be put on him and he needs a game plan centered around beating bigger men. We can see with Marcelo Garcia that smaller guys can beat bigger guys but then again there were no heavy weights that were close to Garcia in his prime.
@GokuInfintysaiyan
@GokuInfintysaiyan 5 лет назад
I’d say it depends on the level. At high level strength means a lot since technique can only get so perfect. At lower and mid levels technique changes a lot. Then again if someone is stronger than you, you could be way more creative and kind of render the strength useless since they will waste it on the wrong movement.
@RandomBJJGuy
@RandomBJJGuy 5 лет назад
It's important for sure. Strength is important. But, at some point, either can become irrelevant. If you are grappling an MG, idc how much you weigh, if you don't train and aren't high level, you lose. On the other hand, if I'm fighting a gorilla, all the technique on the world won't save me. ON THE OTHER OTHER HAND, small weak humans keep gorillas locked up in cages, hunt them, even eat them...

My family lives in the North of England, about 20 miles West of Wigan. My brother worked in Wigan at a McDonalds in the 80s and I remember him telling about how "hard" the Wigan lads were. We had notorious soccer hooligan gangs at the time and my brother used to say that some 16 year olds from Wigan would sort them out no problem. The other thing that makes me laugh is the fact that in 1975 I was learning Judo at the Red Triangle club in Southport and enjoying the freestyle rough housing before the class much more than the actual judo. If only Billy Riley had been more of a marketing man, we had our own martial art just up the road.

Plus in the old days catch/pro wrestlers competed and learned from judokas. Or how one of the father of bjj was PRO/catch wrestler maeda matsuma. Remembered pro wrestling evolved from catch wrestling and is a STAGED form of catch. And bjj actually evolved from judo. And catch wrestlers and judokas learned from each other in the old days.

angel666 I don't see that at all. Certainly there is a push for more BJJ masters. Just cause of popularity. BJJ's main advantage is newer gi techniques otherwise it's the same. Judo and catch wrestling have actually benefited from being sports. Cause pins will tire out someone who wants to be on the bottom. Sports might of also have led to some bad habits as well. Especially if your not fully sparing. It was free style and greco roman guys that were the first to beat bjj guys. They resorted to brute force. As they could obtain dominate position and defend themselves. The answer was ground and pound. BJJ guys had to adapt and not be so limited. Typically if you fight in the octogon with one style, its not gonna help you. But other than that it comes down to the practitioner.
