God of Catch as Catch Can Wrestling Billy Robinson and Jake Shannon demonstrate the fine details of the Grovit/Groffit. Known in contemporary Wrestling Circles as the Front Face Lock or Front Head Lock, this staple of the Catch Wrestling arsenal was originally known by the Wigan Wrestlers as the Groffit or Grovit.
Coach Robinson shows how to apply this devastating submission hold as well as how to use it as a set up for a single leg takedown.

Excellent, when I was young about 30 to 35 years ago this was still practiced in areas of England , mainly around Yorkshire and other coal mining areas. I remember learning face and neck cranks from my late grandfather about 40 years ago

As a former Judo grappler and a current Sambo grappler, I admire and respect all Catch Wrestlers. They are the all top of the food chain in submission grappling. I personally believe that Catch Wrestling is one the best submission grappling art in the world. I wish we had a good catch wrestling school here in northern Florida.

With great respect I say this. It’s because of my experiences in martial arts and because of seeing folks like this that I take nobody for granted and do my best to underestimate no one. I imagine these guys (like some of my teachers) although dont look to tough sitting on a bar stool or big and their not huge or fearsome looking but they’d hand you your ass with a candle in it just as soon as you thought the fight started. Been following these guys for awhile now and although this is an old video it’s a fav of mine. So cool Billy could pass some of what he knows on. Would’ve like to met the guy

@thewelshviper While I have my doubts about Hogan's story I suppose it's possible for a young Hogan to catch an Old Verne with something like this. However I would like to point out that when it comes to actual Wrestling a young Vern Gagna was miles better than Hogan. Although Hogan was alot bigger and a much better showman. Maybe I'm getting old but I'm starting to gain an appreciation for some of the real oldtimers that could actually Wrestle. Like Gagna and Lou Thez.

Thats the point. Supposedly Jericho used it on Goldberg in a backstage fight. Point being that Goldberg - ex NFL player will prob be bigger and stronger than any guy you will fight on the street and if it slowed him down - it will slow anyone down.

In the video "War Department Martial ArtsTraining - Part 1" at 5:10 they do a similar move but instead of the left hand grabbing a tricep it secures an underhook which establishes more control. However both moves will snap your neck in between c3-c5 which control breathing and other vital functions. So be careful with this one!!!

@hitlergoonie4life Yeah, a broken neck doesn't hurt that bad when you think about it. It'll just kill you or leave you without sensation from the neck down. I'm with all of you about respecting the legends. And the best way to show that respect is to attend their seminars, buy their DVD's and their books. Help them put food on the table sharing their art. And when I see you at the next Scientific Wrestling Certification you can show me how you stoically take a submission.

I think it's pretty natural to laugh a bit when you feel pain, IF you trust the instructor enough to know that the pain won't lead to injury. Kinda similar reaction as to when something tickles real bad. I don't really see anything wrong with laughing and having fun neither, as long as you keep focusing on what you're doing.

I've been training BJJ for 3 years, and man do I love the catch wrestling moves! A lot of it may be banned in BJJ, but all in all it is very effective! Good for MMA! This front face lock is a perfect example. It is banned in most jits comps, except it is still a legit submission haha and it is freakin' nasty! Attacking the cervical vertebrae of the spine, and also the fact that it can come on so fast is what makes it a dangerous sub. Must be careful with this one!
