We've been practicing with the new rules (and the fabulous new boxed set "Battle of Pelennor Fields!"), and this video series will focus on the major armies in the game. We'll show you tips and tricks we have picked up, how to build a list and what allies to bring or not bring. Join us in this epic adventure to explore the Armies of Tolkien's Middle Earth!

Awesome video and eye opening. Would have liked to know a little better how to play in reconoitre and agains terror causing armies. Thanks for the tips.
@ERRACuinCaladrim
@ERRACuinCaladrim 5 лет назад
Estanesse may change my comment here, but I'll say first that his strategy for reconoitre is to burn might on heroic marches with the goblin captains, and use the scribe to call more goblins onto his board edge (which is where they are required to enter) to block and stall your opponent from getting off the board... if your opponent can get past your hord! For terror causing armies, he literally throws the horde at them. You have so many models that can take courage tests that some of them are bound to pass, so just roll until you can charge successfully, and then leverage the chittering horde special rule to make sure that you always have spear supports, and make sure you swarm around behind as many models as you can so that they become trapped. If you fail to charge, then you can at least try to make sure that you trap your opponent so that you'll have more dice rolling to-wound in the fights that you win.

I just found this video. Thanks for the info. I do have a thousand point Goblin Town Army (with 150 total models), but it isn't the best for a two-hour time frame. It is fun to play with, though. I have another thousand point tournament coming up in a couple of months and was considering taking the Trolls and 600 points of goblins to make it a more manageable number. Losing the Army bonus, I will only have 57 goblins and the 3 trolls, which is still a lot of models. Any experience with this or recommendations?

At a thousand points I personally would never play Goblintown. Just too many models to keep track of. If you do want to run it though, the three trolls would a fun but not necessarily strategic include. They add some serious hitting power, which isn't necessary for the strategy of Goblintown but it gives you something fun to play with. At a thousand points I would strategically take as many goblins as you can + the king, scribe, grinnah and Gollum. Even at this point level people will struggle to grind through 75 models to break you, and the only scenario you need worry about is Lords of battle (1 of 12!). I wouldn't take the three trolls. Past experience would lend me to believe that at 1000 points people tend to take bigger expensive models, not more models. This allows Goblintown to absolutely dominate in all missions. Goblintown is a good choice for 1000 point events, but I just don't do it b/c it is far too much monotonous play. That's my take, hope it helps!

Thanks Roenan! @Bobby Boy, you're right that 2hr games with high point values don't lend themselves well to horde armies. The higher the point values and shorter the game time, the smaller the army you need. If you wanted to talk about strategic alliances with Goblintown then you might consider taking red allies and adding in Azog/Bolg. Roenan is a Goblintown champ and knows that army well, so his comment has some authority, but that's my two cents. Either way, the Three Trolls are fun, and a great add to any collection, so go ahead and give them a try. You'll still have a boat load of goblins either way, and that's where the heart of the strategy comes from. Happy gaming!

Thanks for the responses... I am currently experimenting with 730 points worth of Goblintown (91 models with no army bonus) and taking only Bill and Tom the Trolls (Bert was sick that day) to get me to 1000 points. With 93 total models instead of 150 it seems a good compromise of still having a lot of models without being quite as annoying to my opponents. I play more for fun than being competitive, but I obviously don't want to lay down and die, either. We'll see.

lol yeah, I won't argue with that. As GW's sculpts go, they're not the prettiest models they've made... but they are faithful to the depiction in the movies, so I think they work. Now if you meant that we need to improve our painting skill then I'll swallow that with a laugh and say that yes, we definitely have room to improve in our painting ability :-) This was one of the first armies Estanesse painted, so we're growing as we go.

@ERRACuinCaladrim
@ERRACuinCaladrim 5 лет назад
@@michwis it depends on how much you'd like to spend. Captains are key in this army, so you'll need several of them, but you can easily convert them from warriors by building up a special base under them to make them stand out a bit and look more important than the standard warriors. Estanesse may correct my reply here later, but I'd suggest four captains, including the two generic captains that come with the Goblin King.
