Making a Game of Thrones Lannister Helmet out of metal. Watch as I transfrom sheet metal and leather into a beautiful medieval Helm. I guide you through this project revealing tips and tricks and showing detailed closeups of different tools and techniques utilized in the crafting of movie costume prop armour.
This project is a built using mild steel and shows techniques which include hot raising as well as cold dishing. Using a jewelry saw to do pierce work on brass and how to pattern draft for metal. It gives a detailed description on how to age and chemically patina the metal and how to use textured hammers to create a decorative rough surface. Brass rivets are used to hold the whole helmet together and this build requires no welding. The large decorative crest is cut with scroll saw using a metal blade and other tools demonstrated include the beverly shear and bandsaw. Hope you enjoy.

To someone who is completely incompetent when it comes to this sort of thing, you absolutely amaze me with your skill. I don't think I could do even a single step of this successfully. Your skill in this area really does show.

Thank you for your compliment. Every step is easily learned. Dedication and patience go a long way when learning this type of craft.
@teutonieth
@teutonieth 7 лет назад
One thing i didn't see you do was harden the metal. Did you leave it out purposefully? Just saying, that in its current form it's not armor grade.
@LightningForce4427
@LightningForce4427 7 лет назад
teutonieth Why need to make it armour grade? It's just a prop, anyone trying to make use of it as actual armour would see how ineffective it's design is to actually protect the wearer.
@DrawbridgeProps
@DrawbridgeProps 7 лет назад
This was built from mild steel so I am unable to harden it. Also this version is too thin to make an effective helm for actual combat. Technically speaking all of the brass except the faceplates were hammer hardened. Hope that answers your question.
@alfonsosanchez766
@alfonsosanchez766 7 лет назад
Just as I was watching this I thought "that sheet metal is too thin for actual combat" then you commented on the actors and such, and then I saw this message, and confirmed my viewpoint, nevertheless I am doing a master in steel manufacturing engineering and I am very impressed with your technique, congratulations, love your workshop too...

Lannister helmets always reminded me of Samurai helmets. Impractical though, like Knightsguard helmets, as they leave the face unprotected and limit visibility.

Fantastic work! I was just wondering how the medieval people would be able to mass-produce all the armors and helmets at such a level of complexity and texture for thousands of soldiers, given the absolute absence of all the tools you have.
@DrawbridgeProps
@DrawbridgeProps 7 лет назад
Thank you!!! There are quite a number of comments and discussion on this video regarding this topic. Quite a few people have chimed in. You can read below... the summary is that this is fantasy movie armour not medieval style. In medieval times there would have been thousands of people working to arm thousands of soldiers.

I haven't started on anything yet, but August 22nd I'm starting on a school hoping to become a blacksmith. So I'll be learning to forge on school 10 months ahead from then. I'm really exited to start. I hope I find somewhere to be an apprentice as there is limited numbers of how many there can be each year, just so people don't get an education and then they don't get any jobs when they're done. I am however prepared to move out of country to do my apprentice-ship.

+Armure Dubé Thanks so much for this!!! I have to say you have been a huge inspiration in my armouring career. Your videos have taught me many, many techniques and you have set a very high bar in the world of modern armourers.

god, it would take FOREVER to outfit your personal army with such unnecessarily complicated armor. i see why many medieval armies just had mass produced ugly, plain, but practical armor

keep in mind that once you make one of each of these parts you have a template to work from which makes the process much faster.. but yeah the logistics of equipping an army in medieval times sounds like a nightmare anyway

jn6305 no doubt. no wonder their armies were (relatively) shitty in terms of organization, arming, training, etc only the knights could afford halfway decent equipment

Not very true. Some medieval armies had nice looking armor like the Germans (Holy Romans). What made European armies so well armored is that they had a working infrastructure to mass produce these things. It has been said such places like Innsbruck Germany or Milan Italy and other places like them can produce amrs and more so armor for a full army of 30,000 men in one to three days! This was because of such infrastructure in some parts of Europe had like automatic hammers and such. Also I herd from some of the armorers (that made armor for 5 or more years) got them selves a automatic hammer (even a historical accurate one) it made life so so much easier and cut the time less then half to make most armors.

+Landsknecht 86 Well, giving the fakt that Innsbruck even in the 1800's only had about 25,000 inhabitants I call this "armor for 30,000 in 3 days" this total BS. More like armor for 30 men in 3 days.

Keyboard runner LOL So what if the inhabitants is about 20,000-30,000 the infrastructure and the tools is what counts more. Things such as automatic hammers and other automatic mechanisms can do a lot. (This maybe way Europe industrialized before everyone else) No, 30 men is not an army and anyone would know that. An Army will be in the thousands. So lets say 30,000 is too much of a number as we always assume in texts, so than well than it may be in about 5,000 to 8,000 men in three, or hell, lets say four or five days. Plate armor was not super heavy and not extremely expensive, in fact plate armor became cheaper than mail armor! As it says: “As the century passed the difference between the arms and armor of the knight and common soldier became less marked and the richer retainer became almost indistinguishable from poor knight.” (David Edge & John Miles Paddock: page 97) This is referring to the coming 1400s.

the lannister armor looks a bit like the one from last samurai movie, and they painted it red.
