Bill and Britt are huge fans of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies. On their quest to build everything from EVA foam they teamed up to create a LotR dwarf style helmet from just a few sheets of EVA foam. Follow along as they use simple tools and materials to transform this humble material into an epic, wearable piece of art.

Remember non American folks, you can get the digital version as well to avoid the shipping cost, and it is just as good. Personally as much as I love physical books, having it on the screen while you are doing it is actually a lot easier. So, buy their books!

Another way of doing the recessed parts is cutting all the was through, then gluing it back together. Then after you glue the parts back together you can run a knife along the backside to even it out. This also preserves the "finish" of the foam when you use something like foam fitness tiles. I'm not 100% sure who I saw doing that. Might have been you or Ted? But I found it to be a bit more forgiving.

I was thinking the same thing. I sliced my finger the last time I used 1 of those sliding snap blades. I will admit it was doing something dumb. I was scoring a craft stick and my finger was in the path of the blade.

Years ago I had just slapped in a new stanley knife blade and was cutting through some foam card, went a bit too far down and sliced off the top of my left thumb above the nail. Thankfully as they are wonderfully sharp I didn't notice anything until a few seconds later when there was blood everywhere. So now days I always wince seeing people using craft knives and hope they dont repeat my mistake. Though as crafters and cosplayers we all have scars from our battles with our creations!

It's always so cool when that first layer of primer, plasti-dip, paint, etc goes on a project. It instantly transforms a project that looks like nothing but a bunch of material with visible seams and noticeable defects into a smooth surface that's just screams perfection. Great job Bill.

My favourite video so far! Since I’m a weapons and armour nerd in both the historical and fantasy context I’m definitely going to try make this. with one alteration, I want to try make the back piece hinged because I feel like if this was a real (meant for battle) helmet, it would be, do you have any suggestions how to accomplish this without creating a huge weak spot?

Justin Cartwright assuming this was a real helmet, having that second piece move would increase your range of motion. You actually see that on a lot of later medieval and even early modern helmets.

How about pushing a few pieces of long iron binding wire into the foam from the edge, parallel to the plane of the foam, then gluing the ends so they stay in place. This would (I think) create a stiffener that would make the cheek pieces hold their shape really well? You could also make a jig that would push the wires in - nice and parallel to the flat surfaces of the foam. Also sharpen the end of the wire first - before pushing into place.

A suggestion (and a cry for help). Please make a Warhammer 40k Space Marine helmet (classic Mrk. 8, not Corvus or Primaris). The compound shapes and transitions are kicking my behind. :)

Was there a Patreon uprising or something to get Britt back in the videos? Does this video seem slightly awkward somehow or just me? Happy she's back if it's of everyone's free will etc - just wondering if I missed something...

We just have a bit less on our plate during the Pandemic, so we're making videos together and having a good time :)
