The funniest thing to come out of Armored Core 6 to me is that people figured out that they can import the models from it into elden ring... to scale! Some of the AC bosses are big enough to be fully explorable regions of the Elden Ring map. Hell, an unused satellite boss' model is actually even bigger than the enitire map!
@puffleperson
@puffleperson 8 месяцев назад
I'm a bit shocked that they'd develop the game like that but I suppose that modern hardware is powerful enough at this point. Reminds me of how someone ripped those strange almost NURB-y models from Garten of Banban and found that they all had obscene polygon counts.
@kevingriffith6011
@kevingriffith6011 8 месяцев назад
@@puffleperson Do remember that scale does not equal polygon count. At the distance you'd be viewing the models from they wouldn't need a huge level of detail (even though the model is *very* detailed), so they could use a relatively low poly count model at a huge scale and just use the same sorts of level of detail tricks as you get closer/further from parts of it. Still, the scale of the things in AC6 along with how good everything looks is still a technical marvel.
@KyteM
@KyteM 8 месяцев назад
Keep in mind scale is just a number that says how many meters an arbitrary in-game unit is. For simplicity's sake most developers set it so one meter in-game is one meter IRL, since it lets them use IRL references more easily.
@kevingriffith6011
@kevingriffith6011 8 месяцев назад
@@KyteM Of course. What I'm getting at is that if you upload an Armored Core model into Elden Ring, it comes out at the appropriate scale. The giant robot is actually a giant robot and not a person-sized robot in a tiny set. It gives you a rare opportunity to experience the scale of the things you fight in AC as a person on the ground would see them, and that's amazing to me. The strider boss is 5 kilometers long, so it's very impressive to look at while standing on the ground in the Lands Between, stretching all the way from Castle Morne to the Erdtree.

I think that the weirdest thing about Armored Core 6 is that every single person I've ever watched play it has ended up finding that to them, a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT build is the "Oh yeah this is the best and breaks everything except for these few bosses" build. I've seen people go with teeny zippy zoop builds, I've seen people build actual tanks, I've seen people build attack helicopters, and now with Yahtzee I've seen the inbetween. It's kinda fascinating how everyone seems to end up with an almost unique opinion on which is the "best build".

The joys of customization are many in this game… and all without the need to spend $5 a pop for each color you want or $19.99 for the DLC with the strictly better gear. It’s all part of the base game… It’s kind of sad that I genuinely feel that this is both a major differentiator and selling point for this game in today’s market.

So much this. My new save file, I've been using gradually smaller and smaller guns on lighter and lighter frames with no OS tuning. I've gotten really good with the sampus and six pack missiles, to the point where I can't beat the final final final boss because it's tuned for... Well, tuning, and having more ammo than the sampus got. And I've been playing AC's below 61k total weight so long I've forgotten how to play a big boy, so I'm kinda stuck lmao

Fun fact about the sense of scale, models actually are made using the correct measurements so the giant robots are around 12-20 meters if you load them into Elden Ring. Dataminer Zullie The Witch has made a bunch of videos loading AC6 maps and enemy models into ER, you can see the starting Loader build tower over the Fringefolk Hero's Grave monument and the Strider is large enough to reach from Castle Morne to the Erdtree.

I think Yahtzee kinda nailed the appeal of the game here. There are a bunch of little things you can get frustrated with for a bit, the numbers can be a bit overwhelming if you aren't an RPG aficionado, and the basic concept is a touch ridiculous, but at the end of the day the game is just raw fun. It's pretty, plays well, and supports an extremely wide range of approaches while still remaining difficult enough to be challenging. Solid game, 9/10.
@Spo8
@Spo8 8 месяцев назад
I think the difficulty is so well done, too. It's not uncommon to run up against a boss fight that you aren't configured well for. Might lose a couple times, have to pivot your mech, study the boss mechanics a bit, then succeed. Difficult enough to challenge you, but not so difficult you get hard stuck. Just great stuff.

It’s definitely more enjoyable when you DON’T treat the game like a souls-like because building your mech is a lot more versatile. Switching your play style is as easy as changing the gear and weaponry of your mech. You want to move around faster? Change your legs. You want to fight from a distance rather than up close? Change all your weapons to rockets and cannons. You want to hack-n-slash your way through enemies? Equip all melee weapons. You never feel like your restricted to one class the once you start the game which is what makes it fun.
@jzpowell2108
@jzpowell2108 8 месяцев назад
Been part of the formula since day one… never hurt that you got back all of what you invested into parts neither… usually to change builds mid game for modern RPGs would end you up running into red… AC eliminates that problem allowing for quick and easy changes to the core setup of your mech… go from rolling fortress to zippy hit and run glass cannon in a matter of minutes
@matasa7463
@matasa7463 8 месяцев назад
Or a healthy balance of them, so you can use the melee weapons to help you conserve ammo. It can also be used as a gap closer if you know how to do melee cancel. The most incredible thing with the assembly is that you can build some incredibly unique builds with unique mechanics, like high energy weapon specialization generator builds that dish out tons of damage using super fast charging energy weapons, or using hovering tetrapods to use weapons like the Taiyangshou and HMMR without being rooted to the spot. There's so much potential out there.

Mobile Suits were developed to fight in space and proved to be effective against Federation's big spaceships due to having similar firepower, but much higher manoeuvrability as well as for being able to get in close, where it was hard to shoot them down and destroy ships with melee armaments. Later they were adapted to Earth environment, but to much less success, which lead to the development of gliders, mobile armours and eventually transforming mobile suits.
@itsgab5745

Simple. Legs make for good use in maneuvering when it comes to space. Why waste fuel for more thrusters when you can just use the heavy limbs to move and swim through space. Why put so many fine tune parts in a complicated clamp locking mechanism to land when you can just magnetically plop on a surface and walk. Plus your standing hirer than a squat tank and can fully view a landscape. More mobility in running and jumping without the need of finding some ramp. The uses go on.

What basically sums up Armored Core is actually it's strength for longevity. Even if you get distracted from it due to some other hotly anticipated release, you can pick up and play it on a whim thanks to it's mission structure when there is a lull in waiting for new games. The perfect put down then pick up at anytime experience. It also preforms fairly well on the Steam Deck due to that reason. Now for inconsistent difficulty? superiority of ACs is clearly demonstrated in AC6 as a flexible platform for different objectives.. sure there are giant MTs, huge tanks, airships etc.. but ACs can do one thing they can't do.. which is the ability to adapt to any situation by modifying your parts to counter enemies strengths or abuse their weaknesses.. which makes ACs limitless in capabilities unlike others which are limited despite their strength.

The tiny helicopters were the thing that really made me realize the sheer scale of the game. In the first mission, I was like, what are those tiny drones flying around? They don't seem very useful for the enemy, why bother with them? And then I realized that they were attack helicopters instead of tiny drones, and I was shocked at how the scale of warfare had grown so much.

There's a level in the game where you attack a giant wall with all these weapon installations, and while im sure 500 tanks could maybe bring it down, 1 mech rushing through it in order to destroy 1 specific target in order to avoid having to bring down the whole wall makes more sense to me. I just think that aside from the research that would be needed to make one, I think a fleet of mechs is a better investment than a group of tanks

Worrying about how a giant robot wouldn't work given real science is like worrying about a fantasy story not making sense because magic isn't real.
@DeadSparkMan
@DeadSparkMan 8 месяцев назад
Not really. In fantasy, most weird elements are introduced with magic, which by definition doesn't make sense. But the giant robots, that's supposed to be all human-made technology. Very advanced technology, but still.

@alexanerose4820 8 месяцев назад
Hey if you explained the science of the technology we have now to somebody just 200 years in the pasty it would seem highly futuristic or magical (there is a difference between the two but that's another topic) to them. And that's just 200 years. Can you imagine a space setting where traveling from the starts is common? Technology there would make modern NASA cream their pants
@adreamer5920

@DeadSparkMan my point is that its very picky to suddenly pick on the concept of mechs not making sense when it's the entire premise of a story
@BrimWiz
@BrimWiz 8 месяцев назад
It comes down to suspension of disbelief. Fantasy suspends disbelief by saying "it's magic", mecha suspends disbelief by saying "it's advanced technology ". The problem for many, myself included, is that mechs don't make sense in their own context either. With the technology in AC6, you could equip the same firepower on several smaller, more mobile units that are hundreds of times more resource efficient, and also more robust because they don't have to account for collapsing under their own weight. This awareness unsuspends disbelief and makes it hard to take anything in it seriously. Fantasy can fall afoul of the same issues, like the famous "why didn't the griffins just fly the hobbits to Mount Doom" or the numerous issues with Harry Potter. But mecha are especially vulnearable to this
@Suimega
@Suimega 8 месяцев назад
 @adreamer5920 Yeah it's picky but it's also fun to revolve your head around how it could make sense, depending on the fiction. Like Evangelion gives you a neat justification as they're more like giant cyborgs that have the capacity to generate an AT-Field. In the case of Armored Core tho, the sheer size and versatility of mechas make up for a pretty decent justification in the lore and the infrastructures you're presented. They're a perfect compromise between speed, mobility and firepower on what is a basically 3-Dimensional battlefield, and their anthropomorphic features actually makes them relevant because they're heavily adaptable whether the tactical context they're involved in is large-scale, medium-scale, aerial, terrestrial or even exo-atmospheric. Like, Good luck conducting the Underground Exploration mission with regular units when the topology is completely unfit for tanks, and way too cramped to fit in fighter jets without crashing a whole squadron into the walls. They make sense because the infrastructures of the game make them relevant.

The point about scale is something that always gets to me in games and other media. Perhaps standing opposite AC, Mechwarrior 5 did a good job of making the scale feel believable. You genuinely feel like you're a person piloting a huge warmachine, and the fact some mechs can't fit down smaller city streets without scraping the fronts off the buildings adds to the sense of weight and power. Then you get to a mech factory and everything feels scaled up because the factory of course has to be big enough for mechs to get in and out of, but you can still see all the catwalks, cranes and platforms that ordinary humans need to work on these huge machines. And then you can easily walk straight though those platforms and structures, smashing them to bits as if they were made of cornflakes. I don't think any game has made me really feel as genuinely big and powerful as that before.
@Gamer3427
@Gamer3427 8 месяцев назад
I have seen some people complain or be baffled by the fact that most of the explorable areas in AC6 have big enough doorways and interiors to support the giant mechs, but people rarely seem to take into consideration that with a society that has been using giant mechs so much for so many things, it makes sense to build the scale to allow them. Particularly since the game doesn't take place on Earth, so there's no structures from before mechs were a thing. It does make it hard to get a sense of scale at times, but it also fits from a worldbuilding perspective.

The thing about giant mechs that people don't seem to know is that if reaction speed scales with size then a mech dodging an anti-tank round is equivalent to dodging a nerf football thrown at you. Giant mech combat is basically playing a high stakes game of dodge ball with rocket propelled grenades. Also at 3 stories tall it's not impossible to think that they'd sport armor that would be impervious to small arms fire and any possible infantry sized weapon and nearly if not outright impervious to the best modern tanks can fire. So basically that leaves it all down to "how good is air support?" for plausibility. Air to surface and AA missiles would be the biggest threat to consider for an in universe setting. ACs are stupid crazy fast and could for the most part easily evade any modern missile so there's that. Meanwhile an AC would absolutely chew through 500 tanks.

It's quite obvious to anyone who thinks a bit about what they're doing, when they play the first level. You quickly notice just which of your weapons has the most damage potential - sword > missiles > rifle. This means that if you want to kill something with a lot of AP, you have to hit it constantly with all of your weapons, especially the hardest hitting one, and ideally when the thing is staggered. I saw the helicopter, hit it with missiles and rifle rounds while slipping between buildings, and noticed I did no damage. In the end, despite trying to boost up to hit with the sword, I ran out of missile ammo and ended up getting exploded. Then I realized the best way to get to the guy was to just assault boost from below the damn thing and never stay in front of it where it can rain hell down. Just repeatedly assault boosting up, sword, and then back down again to cooldown and all the while hammering it with the other weapons to build up stagger.

I define a souls like approach as the opposite of button mashing. The stamina bar and commitment to completing animations means you have to make your inputs count otherwise you’d just buffer like 8 useless moves like panic rolling off a cliff. That’s what defines soulslikes to me. AC6, Bloodborne, and Sekiro ARE more button mashy due to the accelerated pace but you will get checked hard for mashing. That’s what defines soulslikes to me. It drops the pace, raises the stakes, and makes you play carefully for your satisfaction of mastery over the game. Like shit the deflect timing in Sekiro isn’t even that bad compared to something like high level DDR, touhou etc but it’s so intimidating and the stakes are so high that you hesitate. It’s like really good Doom Metal or Black Sabbath like that.

Think of it this way: an AC only needs the one pilot and the relatively small crew to maintain it out of the helicopter mounted hangar. 500 tanks would need an astronomically sized maintenance area and staff and at 4 people a tank that's 2,000 times the supplies needed to keep them in fighting shape. The amount spent on the groceries alone would probably cover the giga-nerds needed to keep the thing running.

I have spent an unholy number of hours learning all the parts. I have mechs of all builds, with their own playstyles refined through hours in the AC Test area, but _my god,_ I *cant* stop coming back to the Pile Bunker. There is no amount of Chef's kiss for landing that, and with double shotguns to stun into a well timed *B U N K E R B U S T E R* I've killed almost every boss or arena duel inside of 30 seconds. I literally replay fights a few times so I can actually hear their dialogue first. *I'll offer build tips if anybody wants

@@funybirbman3813 Sorry I took a while to get back to you man, so what kind are you going for? I know thats a big question because there are even types of mech that dont even seem like an option at first; like I have a guy thats really slow with heavy armor but he has a unique booster with crazy Assault Boost, so you use it to always stay close to enemies with close range weapons and kicking (which does more the heavier you are). So if you've got a weird build in mind I'm here for it too

The awesome part about the shop is that you can a full refund on anything you buy at any point you want Missing 100k for a new fancy thing you want to buy? Refund that one crappy thing you never used anyway for its full value.

1:36 I like how Yahtzee basically recited the names of games that had AC on that meme, plus Ascensions Call. Obviously, AsaCoco was excluded since it isn't a game title, -it's a fictional drug and news show- , and isn't the punchline of the joke, which is the Air Conditioning. On the topic of scale, it just reminded me of one of the things I didn't like about Gundam Evolution. Most of the arenas look like it was made for regular-size humans.

Yahtzee is legitimately the best wordsmith of our time. This man can make me laugh so hard and so loud I think sometimes he's trying to kill me.

The pants falling off meter is a good name for a game mechanic that points out an enemies weak point.

Funnily enough, people have ported the assets from AC6 into Elden Ring and confirmed that, yes, the robots are actually programmed to be about the size of a small apartment building.

Speaking of Alice Cooper, Prince of Darkness is a great movie to watch around Halloween. Enjoy everybody!
