Hey SFC Swartz, I remember meeting you a long time ago when you went to John Jay College to recruit. I'd spoken to you about commissioning out of curiosity because I was an enlisted in the Navy and wanted to commission but wasn't sure which branch to go for. And that's when you introduced me to the 09S program. Really did not know that one meeting with you out of the blue was gonna change my life. Fast forward to 2021, I went thru RSP, basic training (unfortunately again), OCS at Fort Benning and SBOLC at Fort Gordon and now a certified signal butterbar! Just wanna say that you put out some pretty good materials on here, and thank you again for being the very first part of my journey, even thou you probably don't remember me.

This is probably the most helpful video I have watched as a civilian wanting to join the military as an officer. This video is worths it’s weight in gold. It’s reasonable to see why enlisted soldiers don’t like off the street civilians because of lack of military experience. But if that officer knows his trade from the civilian side and can teach them a thing or two, it’s fair to say that civilian officers aren’t that bad. 😊

SFC Swartz, You did a great job explaining the OCS options in this video. I am a former active component Soldier who was commissioned via the federal OCS program at Ft. Benning, GA. Prior to my commissioning, I served as an active component Non-Commissioned Officer and as you make a point of in the video, my prior experience as an NCO was invaluable. The in-person board appearance and officer recommendations are key in the selection process for active component Soldiers. Often, a Soldier interested in this career option will not speak with their Commanding Officer until they are applying for the program. I would recommend letting their First Sergeant or Sergeant Major and Commanding Officer know of their desire as early as possible. This way, they will know in advance, if the leadership will support their decision. Also, they must be a Soldier who embodies and reflects the characteristics for leading as this level. Lastly, they must prepare for the in-person board appearance. I can't stress this enough! Best wishes to all who pursue this opportunity!

Very good information with the exception of State OCS and federal recognition. I commissioned through a FL OCS and received Federal recognition very early as a 2LT. It gave me the opportunity to serve on Active duty, in the Army Reserves and National Guard throughout my military career. E-1 grunt to a SF O-5 🇺🇸

I do have a follow up question I get asked from time to time and I haven’t found a solid answer to help these individuals. Did you go active at the end of your contract or through a conditional release? I was told you as an officer have to go through HRC? What was your process like and share with those who want to switch from Guard/Reserve to Active Duty. I need to do a video on this. My local OSM wasn’t very helpful neither lol

@@TEAMSWARTZ The process may have changed since I my commission, but I received Federal Recognition prior to finishing then IOBC now BOLC. But transferring from the either of the components was always done through HRC and usually required constant communication and patience… With the exception of an AGR tour that I did. Not sure if this helps. But keep up the great job of educating soldiers and prospective officers.

Reserve recruiter said I am likely too old to get age waiver but National Guard did not. The reseve recruiter said he is going to ask his supervisor if there is any way I can get age waiver. I was hoping to attend the federal OCs route regardless who I signed with. So am I correct in saying both reserves and guards can go to federal OCS but reserves/active duty has a stricter age requirement? I have to contact the NGR recruiter again maybe she meant I could still do OCS but only through the state program. Thanks

Hi I’m Ethan. I just saw your vid about the officers. I’m currently 24 years old and my bday was on the 12th of August. You think I’ll be old compare to other Lt’s or officer if I become an officer? I think and I could be wrong that majority of officers are usually 22 or 23. So if I go talk to a recruiter once I’m done studying for the asvab, it will take at least almost a year to be fully accepted to OCS and that is if I do get accepted cus I know you have to go through a process so when that happens I’ll be 26 and OCS and bootcamp is idk how long and I’ll still probably be 26 but probably won’t become an Capt at age 30. Hi! I am currently getting my discharge upgraded by the Air Force BCMR, and I know the new DD-214 or DD-215 will show the updated discharge and such, which supersedes the old one. If I was wanting to commission as an officer with the Army National Guard, would it be possible to do State OCS, based on the factors of being married, currently working, etc.? I know that it will depend if the discharge gets upgraded, yet I was wondering if I commission as an officer, then how do I talk to a strength manager for OCS as to my circumstances and let them know that based on my circumstances, I would only be able to do State OCS?
@TEAMSWARTZ

If it’s an Honorable Discharge you should be good but if it was for disciplinary reasons originally, it should still be in record and may hinder a Secret Clearance. That won’t be identified usually until the background check is completed. Without details I couldn’t say one way or another but worst case scenario, you’d revert back to an enlisted soldier status for the remaining portion of your contract. @@TEAMSWARTZ Right now, it’s in post adjudication status, plus on my DD-214 the narrative reason is currently showing as personality disorder, the RE code is 2C, and the separation code is JFX. By the time I graduated in May 2004, I was ready to ship out to Air Force Basic Military Training in Lackland Air Force base in San Antonio, Texas in late July. I got to Lackland Air Force base late at night, and was processed into the training squadron. As soon as I got into the dormitories, the first couple of days or so, I had to take care of the administrative paperwork for direct deposit, etc. After that, the two military training instructors started calling me Osama in front of the flight of recruits that were also under the same two military training instructors, and they laughed at me, then subsequently did the same thing to me. A couple of other military training instructors (male and female) also did the same thing, but only one other flight’s recruits did the same thing along with their assigned military training instructor. This happened anytime and anywhere I was around. Whenever I did shave in the mornings, and because of no fault through my own, I was told to shave my five o’ clock shadow, and was still called Osama, even after shaving. Whenever we had a class, whether outdoors or indoors, and if it was with my training instructors or any other that were being racial towards me, it was never in the presence of their superiors. If the supervisor or the commander of the squadron came in to give a class on chain of command or a lecture, the military training instructors would not be racial towards me. The other time I never experienced any racism was on Sunday, due to church and such. Due to the racism that I experienced during training, I was sent to the supervisor for multiple infractions, and I did tell him of the issue going on, and even though his order was issued throughout the squadron, this had no effect, as it kept happening even behind his back. The racism still continued, and it got to a point where the commander already had in his mind that I was refusing to train with all the infractions that I had from the past three weeks, without the slightest consideration of the racism that I was going through. Based on this, he sent me to another squadron to be phased out of military life and back into civilian life. While waiting to be processed out, one recruit from the same training squadron still kept calling me Osama and viewed me as an inferior person, until his subsequent departure from the United Air Force. Hey DS Swartz, so I will be over age of 34 when my initial contract with the ARNG finishes up. According to the goarmy.com website, it looks like I should still be able to enlist in the army nurse corp? (Age requirements 21 to 42 years old with a minimum of a bachelor degree, associate degree or diploma from an accredited nursing school required for reservists).. I recently graduated with my ADN (Associate Degree in Nursing) but was told I wouldn’t be able to commission until I got my bachelors; which I could’ve done my research and realized wasn’t true. Regardless, I wanted to do my first contract as an enlisted personnel anyhow. I’m curious, would I be able to try and transition to the nurse Corp somewhere in the middle of my current 68W contract once I get my bachelor degree in nursing (approximately 2-3 years out) or will I have to wait until my contract ends, and then re-enlist in the nurse Corp? www.goarmy.com/content/dam/goarmy/downloaded_assets/amedd_rpis/nurse_corps.pdf

I don’t agree with your opinion regarding the officers that get commission without any enlisted experience. Enlisted and NCOs are one kind and officers is the other. All due respect, a highly experienced and trained nurse doesn’t make a doctor as paralegal doesn’t make a lawyer. There are just different how they are supposed to be. In my opinion, a commissioned officer should be of that particular mindset from the day one.

Respect goes both ways. No, you’re not going to make everyone happy and that’s fine. Be approachable but firm and always fair. Allow your NCO’s to do their part and “trust them” until they give you a reason otherwise. Not for this option unless it’s for special cases like joining the Chaplain corps. Everyone completes BCT. Only exception is some ROTC Cadets who do Basic Camp instead… Thank you so very much for watching this video and I hope you stay blessed! 🇺🇸🙏🏼
