Seiko Field Watch OD Men's SNE095P2 (shown): amzn.to/2cvIWko
Citizen Field Watch OD BM8180-03E (shown): amzn.to/3e5Z6hN
Timex Field Watch (very clean, simple, effective, affordable, various colors): amzn.to/3qf8l5f
Hamilton Field Watch HML-H69419363 (over twice the price of these but nice, day only, Khaki): amzn.to/3EgnaJA
Hamilton H74451833 Khaki Field Analog (actually very nice, reasonably priced): amzn.to/3sgsdYd
The Excellent NAVIFORCE $15 Japaness mvt watch (shown): amzn.to/2dfZGgu
A combat field watch has history. It was used in World War II and many other conflicts. Its pedigree means this: it tough, slim, easy to read, simple, and accurate. Enter two super high value field watches that combat each other here. Each hails from superb Japanese watch makers: Seiko and Citizen. Each is SOLAR POWERED positioning them above any other automatic or manual field watch [for me]. They will run for 10 years before needing a battery! Each has the military look including olive drab nylon bands. The specifics such as crown, bezel, stem, markings, lume, second hand precision, and value are examined. In the end the winners takes the race by the narrowest of margins. Each is a phenomenal and smart field watch choice.
Nutnfancy Likability Scale Seiko SNE095: 3.5 Stars, Citizen BM8108 3 Stars

That citizen was the first watch that I bought a few years ago when I rediscovered my interest in watches. Initially I put on an olive rubber strap similar to the orange one in this video, but eventually switched out to an oyster style bracelet and that's how it remains today. Even with other watches in my rotation, this one still gets a ton of wrist time and is still one of the best looking watches out there in this style. Absolutely love it. Clean, crisp, light (even with the bracelet), and a great everyday watch for all situations.

I own both Seiko automatics and Citizen Eco-Drives, but I have to say that the Citizen watches are more practical. Never have to worry about servicing or changing a battery, and if the capacitor ever wears out, Citizen will replace it.

Correct. I have my seiko5 snk809 for two years and it stopped and required service maintenance which is expensive. Citizen ecodrive is indeed practical choice.

I have the Citizen. Not that exact model, but it's similar (AW1410-08E). Classic and not flashy. Uses the larger band and a little 'chunkier' than the one you're reviewing. Take a look. Much preferred over the blingy watches that seem popular nowadays.

I prefer the look of the Seiko. It was the one I wanted but at the time I could only afford a Timex which is very similar. I have a Citizen BM8475-00X and the lume on it is amazing with a blue/green hue. I just ordered a Seiko SN107P2, I loved the watch but your video pushed me over the edge to commit to it. Many thanks.

Hey Nutn. SSC293 Seiko. Land one and you'll love it. Basically the same as the one reviewed, but comes with chrono, alarm, higher quality nylon strap, and a rotating compass bezel thingy that will never be used. Slightly complicated presentation, but for the alarm, chrono and upgraded strap, I totally think it's worth it. ~$175 I love mine.

I've said this in all of your watch videos but you've not seen it yet so I'll comment again. You will still need to replace the battery in a solar watch. it has limited recharge cycles. Casio gshock/protreck last about 3 years average use. Don't know about those on the table.
@ThePmfan

Nice review. Can't go wrong with either so no need to show a preference. These are the two most reasonably priced quality watch companies, and add Casio/G Shock to that list. I have a WaveCeptor Casio that cost 36 bucks and I use it to set all my other watches because it talks to the atomic clock in Colorado almost every night.

When I was in the Marine Corp I was issued a Hamilton--which was the original "green strap" watch; that was THIN. Where can I get one for sentimental/collector purposes? I carried 3 heavy-assed radios, including one fm: I coordinated and controlled the various firing firing agencies involved in SEAD missions with nothing but the second-hand sweep and my brain housing group. Suppressing fire from arty/mortars to suppress anti-air with a lume round on the deck to mark the target, suppression stops, dash one does a pop-up maneuver and then announces "wings level," then drops. Dash two did the same, and then suppression from a different firing agency would resume suppression. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

Nutn the Eco drive from citizen is an excellent movement and power source just like you stated. I have an Evo drive Skyhawks Blue angels edition that I purchased in August of 2004 and it will still charge up fully according to its battery indicator. I still wear this watch almost every day at work and it keeps excellent time and no service has been required whatsoever. IMHO that's a watch worth the money you pay for it! Once I get to 20 years I'll update you!

I bought my first Seiko self- winding watch in 1972 while in navy boot camp in San Diego. I knew nothing about Seikos but bought it because it was strikingly beautiful and apparently someone else thought it was beautiful too as it was stolen while in the pocket of my foul weather jacket. Bought another Seiko self-winding chronograph. Sold it a few years later to buy another, fancier Seiko chronograph and bought another since then. The last two were quartz movement and all but the very first were black face with stainless steel bracelets. All had thick, rotating bezels which, I think, rounds out the rugged look. My latest watch purchase was a Bulova with Citizen movement, same style. Very nice!

Thank you Nutnfancy for the review. I’m having to retire a Fossil Blue (I forget the model) due to the crystal cracking, and water getting into the inner workings. I’m looking at the citizen military inspired watches, just because I love their look. Battery powered aren’t really an option, due to work being so busy in recent months. I don’t have time to go to a watch store to get the battery swapped. I also would like to pass my watch on to my stepson once he’s older, and wants a watch of his own. Thanks again! Have a great weekend!

I'm not much of a watch connoisseur but I have a couple I like. I have a Momentum Titanium Pathfinder and a G Shock GW 4000-1A Aviation. The latter is solar powered and automatic, both great features. One thing I cannot recommend enough if it is an option, is to get your watch with a sapphire crystal. I have worn the Momentum for years, daily HARD outdoor use and you cannot find the slightest scratch on the crystal. Even if you scrutinize holding it up to oblique light. My newer G Shock I have worn for about two years is still running fine but beat to hell.

I have to say, watching your first watch video pushed me over the edge to get a nice watch. I've always ran 30$ digital timex watches. Love them, but wanted something fancier. Really wanted a field watch and almost got a Seiko 5 SNK809 (B style dial) but decided I wanted something fancier. Started looking at the 300-400$ seiko dress watches and really liked what I saw but eventually purchased a used Seiko SARG009. I fell in love with this field watch! Someday I'll get a dress watch, but my heart went to the field watch first! Sapphire crystal, domed crystal, hand wind plus automatic movement, hacking function, classy look... this watch *does it* for me.

Another win for Nutn! Needed a new watch, so figured I run over to your channel to help. Picked up the Citizen because I preferred the simpler face and MAN I LOVE THIS WATCH! I bought the Seiko SNE095P2 and absolutely find it an awesome watch for less than 100 bucks! I have several expensive watches and end up wearing this one more than the others. I like the big numbers at 12, 6, 9 and the way it illuminates at night... makes it easier to see, especially for someone that uses reading glasses. The band it comes with is ok , but I will most likely change it soon. As far as keeping accurate time... I give it an A+... spot on! Give it a try... for less than 100$ it's a great watch.

I'm on my second Citizen, had this one for over 5 years, and it's still running strong. The illumination isn't as strong as when I first got it, but I also don't purposefully charge it. I lost the first one swimming in a lake, but both of the ones I've had take a beating and stay on time. Out working on my car, hiking, hunting, general farm work, etc, I only take it off when I take a shower. It's amazing the level of abuse it's held up through.

Please keep up the watch reviews, Nutn. I've been enjoying all of them so much. You are so thorough in your testing and reviews. I have the Seiko 5 SNK809 field watch myself. Apart form the inherent limits of automatic watches regarding shock resistance and accuracy, I've had no issues with it. Best $60 I ever spent. Should you be looking out of the box for new watches to review, a very cool option is the Victorinox Night Vision line, variants of which can be found on Amazon under $200. Such a cool watch, it has a built in flashlight. Need to pee in the middle of the night in a new space? Just tap twice and light your way. Anyways, please keep up the watch reviews. Speaking from experience from managing a watch/jewelry repair shop, citizen always was much more reliable than rival seiko. Seiko in the past has usually excelled in style compared the citizen, but not in reliability. In fact from my experience, citizen's quarts movements outlasted many swiss movements like gucci, and movado. Another thing to consider is that citizen has been in the solar powered game much longer then seiko. Citizen started with their solar-tech while seiko had kinetic garbage. I cant count how many times ive repaired the seiko kinetic weights that just loved to fall off. Seiko now gets the point that simplicity with fewer moving parts leads to reliability. Automatic watches with mainsprings are even worse. Mainsprings dont like temperature change and prolonged exposure to heavy impact. Hands have a tendency to fall off with impact. With that being said, id take a casio g-shock digital over any analog watch for reliability.

NF was wearing his new hammie a couple days ago, I was quite surprised. I always thought we shared a sort of tired attitude about them. As cool as they are it is kind of old hearing all about it being the "essential field watch" all the time as if it were the only option. It's great, but it kind of turned me off to it after seeing it was almost the only thing allowed in 1000+ EDC posts until people started branching out. It's died off now, as people have kept adding to their collections so there's a bunch of variety. Thanks for the info. Good to know, it's funky how much maintenance some of these little buggers need. -doodle

Never had an issue with a Seiko band fraying. I used my SNK 805 as an EDC for over a year, I wore it to work and got it wet and full of polish and dirt almost everyday. It always cleaned up nice and looked perfect afterwards. My current "work watch" is a Casio G-Shock DW9052 which after three months of everyday wear at my job does show signs of use. It's nothing bad just light scuffs and such but compared to the Seiko it's something worth mentioning. The Seiko was dropped once and bumped allot. It has nothing to show for it.

I have a Seiko self winding watch. Had it for 2 years. Freaking awesome. $70. Canvas band, which comes apart with heavy use. Great watch overall. You should check it out, just for your own purposes.

Nutn, I'm not gonna lie to you and say that the watch reviews are my favorite content you produce. I'm into everything you do in the project to some degree, watches included. They may not be my favorite, but as long as your producing it, I'll "watch" them. (Couldn't help that pun). Anyway, thanks for all the work you out into the project! Love it, and you'll keep me as long as your producing. P.S. I could always use more cooking vids ;)

Bought the Citizen, looks cleaner. Plus I took your advice and got a Barton silicone band.

Citizen watch wins - hands down! Better Luminous and they were the first ones to introduce Solar powered watch (ECO).

Your commodity comment is spot on. Amazon currently lists the Seiko at $180!

I'm not interested in a weekly or even monthly watch review BUT I really like this video - have been interested in the Seiko for a while but saw some negative reviews on Amazon. Thanks!

If you intend to do aviation watches I'd suggest looking into the citizen Skyhawk line. Pretty great. A little busy in the face but super cool IMHO.

This is the third watch you've reviewed that I already have. I will say I think you have a great sense of taste when it comes to timepieces. I love the Eco drive but im not crazy about the wristband increments.

I enjoy your watch videos. I've been into watches as long as I've been into knives. I'm looking at the Citizen solar powered, radio controlled watches now. Keep them coming. Wouldn't hurt to do more old fashioned knife reviews too. Just saying. :)

The citizen is easily available. The BM8470-11E is an updated version i believe. The Seiko SNE095P2 is much rarer and really hard to find. I went for a Pulsar ( Seiko around 100 dollars ) PX3219X1 which was also pretty hard to find. Also solar and the lumes on the dial were just as good as the Seiko in the vid. Gotta love Chrono24 :)

I despise ghost hands, so gonna have to go with the Seiko. Even though since Christmas of 2010 I've owned a Citizen Eco-Drive watch that has served me well as one of two EDC watches I rotate between.

I wore the factory band on my citizen eco drive for about two weeks, and I grew to like it. I did end up taking the band off and I put on a brown leather nato strap, which looks great. Overall Im very happy with the product, for look and functionality.

This is the type of watch video I've been waiting for! I really dig the other watches you've reviewed, but they're way out of my price range. I hope you get more views on this video, I'm enjoying the watch content! Maybe you could a video explaining the technical terms of watches, like what the different movement types are, and what jewels are. I'm a watch newbie, and a video laying out the basics of what to look for would be awesome!
