I was a kid in San Diego when this happened, years later I was attached to that same National Guard unit that tank was stolen from. Just note that those tanks were there just for weekend training, they weren't ever armed or close to being armed. The only time there are armed tanks is at national training facilities/military bases for range training. National Guard facilities are just buildings in a city, they are not what you would call a military base.
@vermontmike9800
@vermontmike9800 2 года назад
I think that depends on the guard unit. The ones in VT are separate from city buildings and are fenced off just like any other base.
@gpaje

Wow. This has been enlightening and educational lol Thank You. I genuinely mean that haha I love learning random things. So, some tanks are armed and some are not. What are these tanks for? Training, protection, or what? We have old Cannons in our local Parks in Australia, to pay respect to our fallen soldiers and those who fought for and with us. But they are ALWAYS filled in with concrete so if we ever get invaded, they cannot use them against us. Are these tanks in use or for something similar?
@gpaje
@gpaje 2 года назад
@@ozzybloke-craig3690 Absolutely, but to clarify, when I say armed, I mean ready to shoot. That tank was capable of being armed, but there is no live tank ammo kept at a National Guard station. Those tanks are for weekend training of National Guard troops. Live fire training is done using different tanks at large military installations far away from city centers. This event happened 27 yrs ago, they are long retired, M1 Abrams are now the main training tank. Those tanks are for training in case the National Guard unit is activated for wartime, such as the middle east, where they would join active army tanker units.

As a San Diegan, I remember this well. I have travelled all of these streets/freeways all my life. Watching the live news coverage was crazy, a bit surreal. I don't recall the number of crushed vehicles there were but it was quite a few. Can't imagine how the people in those neighborhoods felt, knowing there lives, homes, vehicles, businesses were in jeopardy. Unfortunately, this was before everyone had cellphones or there would be more footage as there were witnesses all along the route the tank travelled. And yes, it's often said we have the best weather in the country.

Losing my mother messed me up for a long time. I knew that I would lose her eventually but it was the way she died that pushed me over the edge. My father died years before but he passed away peacefully while asleep so it was a little easier to deal with. My mother died a horrific death due to cancer and at one point she begged us to shoot her and put her out of her misery. Having disiplinary problems while in the service isn't really something to take into consideration. The military is often very strict, and just like in the civilian world, the people you work with and for can be out to make your life miserable. Especially in the Marines back then, if you weren't very good at running, they'd view your every action under a microscope. 1/2 a second late to formation? You get the book thrown at you. Your alarm clock not go off? You just got written up as UA and your first seargent labels you as a flight risk, sending you to the brig for a month.

The OKC bombing happened my senior year of high school less than a month before our senior trip to Dallas,Tx. On our 1st night at the hotel 4 of us tried sneaking up to the rooftop pool we got off the elevator and as we were trying to find the pool alarms went off and we thought we were busted and turn to run back to the elevator and the door to the area the elevator was at closed & locked automatically and we were freaking out!!! We had to run down like 13 flights of stairs, alarms going off and insanely loud in the stairway and didn’t see anyone else the whole way down and all we were thinking about was the OKC bombing and if we were gonna get blown up before we got down to the ground. We did make it and when we got to the lobby we could see the parking lot full of ppl and being told the hotel is being evacuated we needed to go to the parking lot.

He drove ALL THE WAY to Clairemont Mesa before coming back down the 805. He could have gone the 2000 feet initially if he wanted to hurt innocent people at the hospital. He was looking to destroy property until the police would put him out of his misery cause he didn't want to commit suicide. So it was suicide by cop.

Wow!! I had never heard about this. But I was a mid teen at the time so obviously my biggest interest was not the tv. However I did see lot's of footage about the Oklahoma bombing and being that it was a big part of his decision to do this I am surprised that I didn't see it or hear about it from anyone else. Regardless of his mental state and the bad luck that lead him to do this. Lethal force was the right call especially when you are dealing with someone that is trained. He definitely went into this knowing it wasn't just a mission to retaliate with the hospital. You know he had to have gone into this knowing it would ultimately be a suicide mission. He knew they would have to kill him to stop him. But in his mind he clearly had nothing left to lose. A person with nothing left to lose and in the mental state he was is extremely dangerous!! As you stated it could have easily been much worse if he started out with killing civilians!! I am sure by now especially after Oklahoma and 9-11 they have much better security for any kind of access to things like this!!

A tank on the loose without anti-tank weaponry is just about unstoppable. There could of been 50 police cars surrounding it and he could of simply ran right over all of them. Cars would provide zero resistance against tank treads. He could of even probably drive right through homes if he wanted to. No standard firearm would of penetrated the tank and I highly doubt any police force was rocking anti-tank missile launchers, lol. Until perhaps the chopper showed up with missiles, I'd say that guy was wide out in the open to cause as much destruction as he wanted. Thankfully he literally didn't have that completely on his mind because he could of done far worse within the areas they showed him driving through.

It is sad from an overview, what happens to a person to make them do this... they had to stop him at all costs, but maybe they could have done other things before the shooting. But maybe there are things we don't know about it. He didn't deserve to die for what he did, but if he had to for it to be stopped then that's justified.
@jeffreyphipps1507
@jeffreyphipps1507 2 года назад
I think the only person who gets to say whether it was justified was his family - they say it was. If the military had to shoot, collateral damage could have hurt others. Mace wasn't going to stop him from trying to dislodge the tank. If someone has a weapon, sometimes the police have to take lethal action. It's unfortunate, but the greater good takes precedence.

He didn't destroy a town, he destroyed a very specific list of properties of people in the local government that wronged him. They were so sure during his rampage of the motive they were even calling ahead and saying he was probably coming there.

Of course it was justified, what a dumb thing to ask by some people. There have been people shot for far less offenses by authorities. The officer did what was needed and he saved countless lives in the process.

Everyone in life has things happen to them that are tragic and untimely. It is what and how each of us choose to react to those things and WHO WE CHOOSE TO BLAME! This guy made a conscious decision to steal a piece of armor and to use it to terrorize innocent civilians. I am sorry he had a hard time in life, but honestly, there was nothing that happened to him that has not happened to MILLIONS of other people, and yet none of them used a weapon against another. It is sad he died for his actions, but if I were the police officer standing atop that tank while it was being gunned back and forth, I would do the same thing and fire...I would have no other choice. I still remember hearing this story on the news, even here in WAY Norther CA.
