Arnold, Arnie, A-dawg. It's time to learn how to hook up the textures we created in the previous video into a shader in the Hypergraph. In this video I go through everything you need to know to get your textures into Maya's Arnold and rendered, the tips and tricks that can catch you out and how to do some basic lookdev inside you shaders.

My name is Michael Wilde and I'm a professional VFX artist, I have been working in the industry for nearly 7 years and worked on many Hollywood blockbuster films, including a couple of Oscar winners! I'm here to demystify VFX and try and teach what I know to others :)

I'm a compositor with a basic knowledge of Maya and trying to learn Lighting to improvise my skills. This is the best tutorial I've found till date for a beginner like me. Thank you so much.

So happy you made this! I wanted to bug you before in a previous video where you said "I'm not a lookdever" -- that may be, but I appreciate your presentation skills and tutorial style. Cheers!

I'm really glad it can help. I have done lookdev on some films like Fantastic Beasts 1 and The Mummy (which I still haven't seen...), and some others I'm sure that I've forgotten but I don't really enjoy it so I try to avoid it. I don't know it as well as an actual lookdev-er so I want add slight get out clause incase I get anything wrong ;) That said, I know enough and I have to lookdev any personal work or freelance that I've done so I feel I know how to do it well enough to impart knowledge onto those that don't!

Really lovely tutorial! Transitioning from redshift to Arnold , some of the settings were slightly confusing for me and and your video really helped clears things up! Thank you so much! 🎉❤

I know you mentioned this, but it will be great if you do a video about setting up a proper colour space im Arnold (in Mari as well). It is difficut to find a video that explains this in a simple matter. Thank you for the helpful videos!

In terms of colour space in Arnold, the main thing you need to know is what your textures colour space are, then you just need to make sure in the file node you have it correctly set. I want to do one on Mari but it’s such a complex topic that it will take a while, I’ve been writing the script for ages and I’ll need to run it by some people to make sure it’s all correct

@@MichaelWildeVFX Thank you for the explanation Michael! Yes it is a complex topic - it would have been a lot easier if it was straightforward. The one on Mari is a very good idea too. Thanks!

Honestly just habbit at this point from the days of using Mental Ray as it made your textures crisper, I haven't looked it up in a while to see how it affects Arnold so if you're curious I'd have to suggest doing some research on it! I think it's fine to ignore it don't worry.

Did you find out if settting filter type to "OFF" or left it on "QUADRATIC"?
