Britannia Panopticon will be celebrating 120 years of film being shown in this building. This video shows footage of that year around the world with added sound to bring it to life.
What amazes me is how well dressed and clean everyone was, even children, yet they didn’t have washing machines, dryers, modern irons or cleaning products!!!
Удивляет отсутствие конского навоза при очень густой перевозке на конских бричках!?!?!Люди снуют прямо между повозками, не боясь вляпаться .а женщины длинными юбками метут улицы. Массовые съемки фильмов, как по мне.
@@GeoStrum3 Yes, we will look odd to future generations. How much longer before "photos" are 3D and interactive? The word "photo" itself will be a blast from the past, like photo album, record player and tape recorder. My mom has photo albums and records from her mom and I guess they'll be mine one day ... But all that stuff seems so dated and weird ...
Both of my fathers parents were born in 1895. This is the world they were born into. It's helpful to remember that some of the people in the 1930s and 1970s videos are some of the same people here. Their childhood in the 1890s, their middle age 1930s/40s and then their last years, when I knew them in the 1970s when I was a child. Now it's my middle age. Amazing.

I cannot describe to you the greatness of the Qur’an. It is the word of God. You will know that when you read it with contemplation. Do that by yourselves and do not get distracted by others. Then ask your Lord to guide you to the right path so that you can see the proofs, so you will win this world and the Hereafter with the pleasure of your Lord upon you.
Absolutely amazing to see. 1896 my grandfather would have been age 7, he was a great deal older than my grandmother. He was a pall bearer in WW1, and head gardener for a big mansion near London, UK. I think that's where he met my grandmother because she was a ladies maid in the same mansion. That was back in the day of big houses having live in servants. When they got married they were one of the first working class people who were able to afford to buy their own house because they were high up in the servant pecking order, had good wages. When I was 7, my grandfather was a really old man, I can't remember much about him apart from his garden was always perfect, other than that he mostly sat hunched up in his chair. When my grandmother was really old and I was married with my first child, she told me that she'd seen such change in her lifetime, we had gone from a slow paced horses and carts to super fast men on the moon. Now I'm in my 60s and bouncing my own grandkids on my knees. :D

Oh geez, gimme a break. What an un-original comment. I’d bet my life savings you typed that silly comment out on the same cell phone you were just using to scroll through FB.
They were still not exposed to gmo, fake, artificial food, no tv, deception, no “modern” medicine. Man were man, women were women, families bigger, healthier, connected and cared for each other. Also most of the clothing was custom made and tailored.
I'm blown away when I see these video's. Makes me want to jump in this era and experience all of it. I love going back in time. Wish they had video's that went back even farther than the 1800's, but they didn't so this is as far as we can go. It's so great!
Interesting that you say that, I was thinking what would be more difficult, someone from that Era being forced to transported to today's world, or from our Era forced to live back then ?
@@doug3819 Hi! Very interesting question; I think I'd have an easier time adjusting to life in previous eras because it's going back to basics, like when I go camping. Plus, I've had the advantage of a life time of movies depicting life in every era back to ancient Egypt and beyond. I'm not saying it would be easy or enjoyable compared to now: it would be much harder physically, especially if you went back as economically disadvantaged, and underprivileged. But I would just be dealing with simple, everything-by-hand technology. Learning to use a rock or a washboard to do laundry would be much quicker and less mind-boggling than for someone from the Middle Ages, or even the 19th century to learn how to operate a high efficiency front load washer and dryer. My husband from Magadan, Russia, became nervous and light-headed, and had to leave the store when we were just shopping for ground coffee. I asked him what was wrong, and he put his hand on his forehead, and said, "Is too many!!" He was mentally overwhelmed by too many choices, and the culture shock of being in a large grocery store for the first time. In Magadan, almost nothing had a brand name, except cigarettes and vodka; and he had never seen a zucchini, or green pepper, or MOST of the produce we take for granted. To me, being suddenly transported to a world of advanced technology would be so alien, and mind altering compared to suddenly having to do things the hard way, in a simpler form, with fewer choices, and closer to nature. Thanks for the question!
@@varonadee6980 you may be correct, my grandfather born in 1889 never adjusted to the modern world, when I was a child in the 1960s he would always say he wished he could go back to horses over auto's ! My late father would always say he was nuts ! I myself born in the 50s are nostalgic for the 70s or early 80s. I would ask my late father at times could he go back and live in the 20s again, he would always say you would have to be guaranteed good health, same with his children, be European in race, live on the edge of a city in order to have some utilities, otherwise life would be too difficult ! I do agree with you that it would probably be overwhelming for someone to be sent to the future. Thanks for your comment.
@@doug3819 So interesting; my great grandfather, born in 1872, was like your grandfather. He continued to use the outhouse for the rest of his life after plumbing the house. He maintained that indoor plumbing was for the women folk. He died at 92, in 1964, when I was 12. I admired him greatly! Thanks for your comments!
Its so odd to see that horses were an integral part of everyone's lives when today just to see one on the street is a novelty. Will they one day say that about gas-powered cars? Thanks for this window into the past.
It’s crazy to believe every single person in this film is passed on and we are their descendants. In 150 years people are going to be looking at footage from our time and we will all be passed on as well.
It is really a beautiful and simple time. We thank the photographer who took us back to 126 years to this beautiful era and made us feel and live the feeling.
Yeah it wasn't so simple back in these days Everybody assumes that Don't forget people in the 18 and 1900s live through a lot of war and disease and famine and death
Just incredible that this part of history has been preserved, and so well too. Fascinating that we, in 2022, can see what active life looked like so long ago. They were all so dignified, had humility, nothing was easy, moving about took real planning, and were respectful 126 years ago. Manual labor was the “primary ticket” then. Wonder if they could see us today, they’d run like hell the other way….. and never look back! TY for making this available.
The thing that always jumps out to me about these old films is how many people wore hats. Not everyone, but close. I would be interested to hear ideas about why hats were so much more popular back then than they seem to be now.
warms my heart to watch an earlier time, soaking up the scenes. As a man I think I fell in love a few times. Imaging myself in my gentleman attire, hat in hand saying "after you ma'am." Then I come back to my senses to the year 2021 and get a little depressed and disappointed in todays society.
I'd love to time travel but only to observe it, not to interact with it. Can you imagine how confusing the timeline would be if you could influence it?

Absolutely brilliant ! I could watch these fantastic archive films all day. 1896--the year my dad was born. What a world he was born into, he was involved in both world wars, and he witnessed so many amazing inventions and changes in the world. He died in the 1970's.
@gangsta homie Its impossible for people to be 80+? Most people die in their 70s, I dont think its unreasonable for someone to live just a few years more.
@gangsta homie What? Do you lack basic reading comprehension? Have you ever attended elementary school? I said its possible for someone to be 80, not that I totally believe the story.
If your dad was born in 1896 and you're alive today then you probably saw more change than he did tbh. Imagine trying to explain youtube or the internet to somebody from the early 1900's
The times of our forefathers whose relentless efforts of yesterday benefiting us today. Their soul may rest in eternal peace. Amen. Special thanks with love from Pakistan.
Truly amazing. But it got me thinking. Have things really changed that much? People back then were going about their lives just like we are today. Going to work or relaxing, trying to survive in the big city..worrying about their lives and not really fully comprehending how fleeting it all is. I don't believe time exists at all.
1 You had to wind up your mp3 player. 2 People consumed more mustache wax . 3 No Nintendo. 4 Most Americans believed, deep down, that anyone named Wilbur or Orville probably wouldn't ever do anything important. 5 Computers were made out of wood. When one wore out, you could go to a computer farm, and pick out a fresh one. Now we have Best Buy. 6. Many young couples rode a bicycle built for truth.
Off course there were accidents, if you were poor you just got left injured or to die on street. In those days they documented just the positive and wealthy non of slums with cholera etc
I'm 23 years old and I absolutely love watching footage from the early 1900s and before that. People were so charming back then and everything looked so simple even tho I don't believe life was that easy in these days. It's crazy to see how much we have evolved and progressed. I hope we never lose this footage. Thanks for sharing!
I was there in Lyon, Place Bellecour, 69 years after - for the first time! Always a magic number for me, because of the F-69 Rhône, and more and more of the cars having that number when I approached Lyon hitch-hiking from Denmark to see the love of my life having met her in Germany. Just wish I had STAYED there already the first time. ... or at least one of the following times...now I am stuck in seemingly unsolvable problems in Swizerland, immobilizing me - and thinking about her and Lyon all the time. .being utterly sad...
Why does everyone keep saying, "damn those people are dead" as if we didn't know that already??? The main point of this video is to take a look back through time and appreciate what life was like in the past. Appreciate each and every single individual as they were and keep those memories locked inside our hearts even if we weren't there.
And all the people that keep saying “I can’t get my head around the fact that these people are dead” like what. Are your great parents still alive or something lol. That’s literally what life is. We all have our lifespan.
Because they're ignorant of the fact that they are us and we are them. It's the circle of life, they think they're special and aren't going to die. It's this self absorbed generation.
Well some of us still marvel at the reality of moving photos, that an exact image can now be captured permanently for thousands of generations later to see. I get it.
But who built them? Was it the people there before them? Look at their streets, the horse and wagon the people who were there before them were much more advanced in technology to build such grand structures these building are way older before their time a RESET of the pass look deeper what do you see.
Very unlikely but an interesting thought all the same, so sad everyone who was alive back then are long dead, but years seem to fly by and don't seem that long when you think about how quick each year feels throughout our lives
Incredible! It makes you wonder, how the world has changed so much since these simpler days. Who were they? Where were they all going? It was just another day in their lives, yet now they’re all gone, their whole world is gone forever. Only buildings remain. I wonder, if 100 people from those days could come into our time for a month, how many do you think would choose to go back to their own time? My guess is over 70%. I know I would go back with them.
Whoever recorded this is a legend! And whoever saved this video is also a legend! Going through the early 1900’s and late 1800’s footages gives so much nostalgia! That’s when the cameras were created! Black and white I know, but this is amazing!

I wonder if "horsefeathers" was really euphemism for horseshit back then. Or is that common knowledge to everyone but me? Don't mind me it's just the the weed. Lol
It also appears that these people just appeared here. Walking around lost. Silent. Confused. Like they woke up from the dead. Or Like the Bible says, resurrected.
@@anthonycarroll6546 ??????? How on earth do you get that from watching these films? Some of us have relatives who lived back then and were around long enough for us to know them, if only for a few years. Has ANYONE talked about be "dazed and confused" or "waking up"? No, they weren't that much different from us, with hopes and fears, loves and hates, and goals to pursue every day. No magic, no shazam moments.
Each and every one of these people have passed away, and that world has passed away. The same will happen to us and the world today. For some reason it doesn't feel sad, watching the video and thinking about this brings a strange, soothing sense of tranquility.
People don’t realize that the city outdoor was a theatre and people saw themselves as actors thus they dressed, walked, spoke and behaved in a manner to impress and attract admiration and respect

Justin Brooks "We all will be dead" hmm not really. I will most likely be alive in 20... something. But in 21... that's another story. But who knows... with modern science who knows when we'll die, maybe we're all cyborgs or something.
Willie Gordon Yes that's true though. One of the films, was "l'arrivée du train en gare de La Ciotat", "the arrival of the train in La Ciotat station". And already in 1896, the brothers Lumière, send teams of cameramen throughout the world, even in Russia! It's amazing!

There are enhanced versions of these if you look for them on RU-vid, which really are astonishing. Missing frames have been created in order to smooth it out and they are also colourised.
In school they taught us that the first video camera wasn’t invented until the 1900’s. We were taught that the first silent film was made in the early 1920’s.
Amazing vintage....amazing...just travelling in Time Travelling machine...a wonderful world 100 years ago...what a life at that time...if it's possible I would like to go back to those days to enjoy my life of that particular era. Yes, I am professor of history...millions of words can't make such great picture as this video did...
Watching this, I realized that around the same time had passed from the American Revolutionary War, to until this was filmed as has passed from when this was filmed, to until now...around 120 years. It feels like time travel watching films like this, I only wish we could go back further.
imagine if in 1976 we could have watched events from 1776...the people in 2176 who watch something from 1976 will be doing the equivalent time-wise. (if the dems havent destroyed the world or sent us back to the dark ages by then)
Donna Barnbrook no one will be watching him or me because we are all not going to be unique people, we might just live ordinary lives forgotten by history
Aspect Memes That’s not really the point though is it?, the people in this video are average common people just going about their day. Who’s to say in 100+ years from now someone might discover footage from the generation we’re living in?...after all, this generation will non-doubtably be the most documented due to the amount of technology available nowadays ie. cameras, internet, CCTV so the possibility is still there.
Very interesting and informative. Women wore a lot of layers of clothing in those days. Almost all the men and the boys wore a hat or a cap, lots of "toppers" and "bowlers". Heavy traffic in the cities. The girls just walk straight ahead but the boys almost always stop and look into the camera and sometimes wave. Men tip their hats at times. Fascinating and very well done. Congratulations to Britannia Panopticon for sharing this.
It’s historical tradition from ancient times in historical times. It’s a tradition today in Judaism and other religious teachings to carry on. America still in ways carrying this tradition with cowboy hats and 🧢 caps. Even is Texas gals still wear hats both cowboy and caps! 😊
what is really strange is that there is not a single construction site to be seen. the buildings were mostly built in neoclassical style. that was around 1890, they should be all around
You need to look further than YT. There are plenty of photos of construction of projects like the transcontinental railroad, the Eiffel Tower, etc. but they tend to be in history books, engineering / construction archives, etc. Seriously, there's no mystery and no conspiracy. Just a whole lot of really hard work by our forebears.
Just the fact that we are watching this in the palms of are hands is incredible ... Maybe in 100 years from now there will be a way to travel in time??

These are people’s great great grandparents. Some families don’t have images of their family, but some of them may be unidentified on a film like this but we will never know who they are.
What gets me is the fact that people watching these films, may unknowingly be seeing distant relatives, or the similar thought, that some of those on film will have living relatives today. I love old film footage and old photographs, I still take film photographs with old analogue cameras, it is like magic. That is how these people must have felt about these " new fangled " invention, their reactions to being filmed are priceless.
