Important - This video is for entertainment only. It is not intended for instruction and should not be used for any training purpose.
In August on a beautiful VFR day, I had a business trip from Seattle down to the San Francisco Bay Area. Rather than share the whole flight, I thought I would do a more in-depth video of the arrival into Hayward Airport (KHWD). I’ve flown into Hayward several times but it is always “interesting” for a few reasons:
• It at the end of a ~4hr single-pilot IFR flight
• It is in the busy NorCal Approach airspace
• Hayward is not a difficult airport at all but it is buried in an area with a lot of development. It always takes me a while to visually spot it … even thought I know exactly where it is.
Despite all this, it’s a terrific airport with great controllers and FBOs. Its an easy place to rent a car and get on with your day.
I hope you enjoy the video. Please LIKE, SHARE and SUBSCRIBE if you do!
2018 Diamond DA42 VI with G1000 NXi (Phase II) avionics. Certified for Flight into Known Icing (FIKI). Also flying with Garmin Pilot on an iPad Mini. Three GoPro Hero 9 with RAM mounts in the cabin. Flight data downloaded from the G1000 NXi played back on CloudAhoy

Just discovered your DA42 videos and have been watching them over the last several days. Excellent work! I learned to fly at Palo Alto in the mid-90s, bought an Archer, and flew it out of South County (E16) up to 2002 before moving to the East Coast. The views of the Bay Area are very familiar -- I picked out Livermore Airport by Mount Diablo before you turned right to the Hayward approach. A video editing question for you: how do you generate the nice callouts for landmarks in your videos? I like how they reveal, move along as your camera changes, and then swipe away.

Mark, thanks for the kind comments. Yes lots of interesting airports in the Bay Area. I also flew into Livermore earlier this year and stayed with some friends who live nearby. It seems like a great GA airport. I started using Premier Pro earlier this year so all the callouts are done in that. I've been trying new call out designs in each video to learn more about the features. This video had some existing call outs that I modified with the animation features for tracking.

@@twmba65 Thank you! I'll have to give Premiere Pro another try. I searched the callouts topic a few weeks ago and saw that it could be a bit involved, especially with PP in which I'm not experienced, but I may just have to sit down and go through it step-by-step until I get it. Back to the Diamond, I forgot to mention that I flew a few hours in the Diamond Katana (DA20) with a Rotax 100hp engine in the late '90s. It was so much fun to fly; the visibility was excellent and the responsiveness of the yoke was really nice. The plane would just pop off the runway at rotation. I flew it out of South County to Watsonville and Hollister. Nice to see how Diamond has continued its evolution up to the bigger models and twins. Your detailed narration and closeup angle of the Garmin screen plus the full visibility out the windshield are really appreciated. I like paper checklists, too, even with all the automation. I also remembered that I did a few flights for Angel Flight West with another pilot in my Archer. I'm not instrument-rated, but once the two of us had to pick up a AFW patient out of Arcata (or maybe it was Eureka) up north, and there was a big cloud deck/marine layer around there. My instrument-rated pilot friend took us down from altitude and we broke out well above minimums. That worked out well. AFW is a wonderful organization. On another trip, we were returning at night, skirting the SFO Class B along the Diablo range like you did on your approach to Hayward, and the Archer's alternator died. I quickly shed the electrical load by turning off what I didn't need, and my copilot talked to SJC to shorten our route and we landed at South County just fine 10 minutes later. A capacitor wire had broken off from the vibrations in flight. That was a good learning experience. Check out my 48-state tour at www.flight48.com (under Pilot's Log), all VFR. That was before blogging, iPhones, iPads, ForeFlight, Facebook, RU-vid, GoPros, etc. Affordable aviation GPS receivers like the Garmin III Pilot ($799, I remember) were just starting to come out (no moving map, 16 levels of grayscale, but hey, it ran 10 hours on AA batteries). I subscribed to your channel and I look forward to more videos of your flights and plane ownership adventures. Very high quality!

@@marklstern Thanks! That route you did around the US is amazing. I love long xcountry trips. I really do like Premier Pro but nothing is easy when you are first learning it (and I still consider myself a neophyte!). It feels a bit like flying. You get better as you do it a lot but if you slow down, your skills quickly atrophy. There are a number of RU-vid channels that have useful tips and tricks. My favorite is Premier Gal. My plane has been in for its annual for about a month and now I'm off with the family for the holidays ... so its been some time since my last video. I do have some good trips planned in Jan and Feb, so hopefully you'll start seeing some new videos in the 2023!

@@twmba65 Based at LVK myself, and just want to say..... Really enjoying the videos! Great flying, camera work (wish I could get mine to work that well..!), and editing. Please keep them coming.

@@twmba65 And also: Flew a DA-42 from LVK to RNT a few years ago, so feeling a little kinship based on that. Heading to PAE next week too, weather willing!
