www.deeranddeer... What happens when a broadhead tipped arrow meets a deer's shoulder blade? Dan Schmidt and the Deer & Deer Hunting crew explain how arrow penetration can be tested by shooting at boards of various widths. These quick examples aren't foolproof and do not represent what will happen when shooting at a live deer, but they underscore the importance of shot placement when bowhunting. Then, in the product of the day, learn how skinny arrows like the Easton FMJ can improve arrow penetration and lead to more efficient harvests in the whitetail woods. Deer Talk Now. Season 6. Episode 21.

Very informative I experienced major penetration problems with a top brand expendables with a HTR set at 57# with a 400gr Axis switched to Wasp Drones with a razor sharp Trocar tip unbelievable penetration complete pass thru and stuck the arrow a inch deep into a downed tree the deer stepped over it really depends on how some bows can tune that dictates what style of broadheads you can use.

This video illustrates why I hunt with 300 grain broadheads. My entire arrow weight is 650 grains with a 22% FOC back by an 80# draw. They're set up to kill Woolly Mammoths when the scientists are done cloning them.

You know you can kill any animal in north america with a 55# pound bow. And 650 is a good minimum arrow weight.

One of the biggest reasons behind mechanical broadhead failure is not shooting a hard hitting arrow. If you can focus all that energy in the arrow into a smaller area you're going to get better penetration. So many arrows don't penetrate down deep enough from the angle of a tree stand. Little more force and full pass through can save you and the animal a lot of heartache.
@BennyCFD
@BennyCFD 6 лет назад
That's why the optimal setup according to Dr Ed Ashby (leading authority on arrow lethality) says you should use an arrow of at least 650 grains and a good single blade broadhead. You can kill any land animal in north america even with a 55# recurve.

I did a test with a real deer scapula a few years ago after I was done butchering. I was shooting two blade fixed broadheads (Zwickey's). I affixed the scapula to a broadhead target. The broadheads easily penetrated the scapula, except for the area of the scapula that has the ridge. That area of the scapula is a different story and I believe is what causes the penetration failures most of the time. I was also shooting Carbon Express Heritage arrows which I believe are 10 grains per inch. Heavy compared to what a lot of compounds shooters use. Momentum is important.

Dr Ed Ashby is a great man with tons of research and years of experience on this Pass through is the goal! Small skinny carbon arrow shaft with a massive single bevel 2 blade broad head No such thing as overkill with bows But it sure sucks just wounding one I’ll never get the craze of super light mechanical broad hands

FOC will have a big factor on penetration of an animal and missed opportunity in this segment (unless you planned a future video on FOC), a heavy arrow build is great for quieting your bow. However, where you put that weight in the arrow itself can change how far or much penetration on an animal you will have. The FMJ are on the heavier side which is great for the point you're making, but if you were to use Easton's Hexx arrow shafts still with a 400 spine at 7.2 gpi assuming 28" arrows for both; there is almost a 75 gr difference between the two. Penetration being the motivating factor using the light arrow and putting in a 75 gr brass insert, you now have the same weight of an arrow but with a higher FOC. The higher the FOC the more the arrow wants to pull through the animal maintaining energy versus trying to push through which is evident in your slow motion shots with the arrow bending losing energy. Good luck this fall
@rpl5950
@rpl5950 5 лет назад
The arrow bending has nothing to do with FOC. All arrows whip and bend out of the bow. A properly spined arrow will recover from paradox and hit a target straight when it is properly tuned. The problem with massive FOC is that it masks tuning errors, it can also cause an arrow to hit the animal at an angle when fired in the wind. A properly tuned and balanced arrow hitting straight on with a sharp broadhead will always perform when shot into the pocket.

I've used rage 2 and 3 blade.. shooting PSE Surge at 55# draw and have not had a problem with shoulders, i hit one quartering away hard through the stomach(full of grass and grain) and hit the opposite upper leg bone, and broke it. Penetration is not an issue. The biggest key i shot placement.

I hit a doe the other day in the shoulder. She was walking directly at my stand, when she cleared the bush, she was almost under me on an Oblique Angle. I called to get her to stop and she looked up at me. I wanted to put it into the neck on down into the chest. But she moved and it hit her shoulder. Threw the arrow about five feet and ran off. I saw her a couple days later. I'm glad I didn't mortally wound her, just to find her days later.

Hi Will, several options available including the Rage Xtreme. I would recommend not taking quartering shots and also limit shots to 25 yards and under. Best, Dan
@100embark
@100embark 6 лет назад
The Rage Xtreme is NOT the way to go. It will get the job done well, but you will likely not have 2 holes. Any of the 2" Rages will be fine, as well as NAP Spitfire. 2" cutting diameter is more than enough and 25 yrds will be no problem with a heavy arrow and good FOC. I shoot 60lb 30" arrows that weigh 450gn with a standard Rage 2 blade 2" and get a clean pass at at-least 32 yrds.
@tenkara1309
@tenkara1309 7 лет назад
The video is good BUT, the issue with "shoulder shots" isn't well represented in the video.....all shots on the wood was taken at a right angle to the wood. In "real" life the loss of penetration is because the deer is moving by "ducking"/ walking and the shots hit the shoulder at angles other than perpendicular. I like how you stressed penetration via momentum over speed.
@DDHONLINE
@DDHONLINE 7 лет назад
You are correct, and we do address these in several other videos on shot placement on this site. The nature of this series only allows us to provide about 4 minute episodes. We should have stressed how NOT to take shoulder shots more, I agree with you, but the larger point was shot selection and the urgency to know how your gear will perform before heading afield. Thanks for watching and good luck this year!

a wood board is not the best material to to test a bradhead on. I spit a 4 foot 2x6 in half with a bradhead when it hit vertical with the grain of the wood. Then I shot it again and the blades hit horizontal with the wood grain and the broadhead got stuck. You are better off using ply-wood to test because the different laminations give different grain directions.
@DDHONLINE
@DDHONLINE 6 лет назад
Agreed. This was just an example.
@steveyd101
@steveyd101 6 лет назад
I was just saying that it could give some people false hope on their arrow setup. You can break a board in half with a 2.3" rage if you hit in the right spot. Thanks for preaching heavy arrows thought. I think the whitetail/archery industry has been pushing fast bows and not concentrating on the arrow setup. Most bowhunters are basically pushing a square peg through a round hole with a fast bow and bad arrow/broadhead setup.
@DDHONLINE
@DDHONLINE 6 лет назад
You are correct, Steve. We could have been more clear on this point, and do not wish to spread false hopes. The key points, as stated in the video, is to truly know your gear and setup and how they will perform while hunting in relation to deer anatomy. Thanks for watching!

I shoot several styles and brands due to my position here with DDH as editor in chief, which requires me to test all sorts of broadhead styles. This year I have shot whitetail, antelope, hogs and an axis deer with everything ranging from the new Rage Trypan to the TRUGLO Xtreme (4 blade expandable) and the NAP Crossfire. I personally prefer a large, cutting diameter expandable. That being said, I never take long shots with my bow and vehemently INSIST on super high-odds shot placement -- broadside and slightly quartering away are my preferred shots at deer. Nothing is foolproof in any type of bowhunting, crossbow hunting included. A broadhead kills by causing massive hemorrhaging. A large cutting expandable helps with this, as does it help with blood trailing. I also use fixed blade broadheads on some of my hunts. Fixed blades are still the best option for penetration and for sharpness. Probably TMI, but this is my mindset anyway. It has worked for me. I know for a fact that other bowhunters have their own preferences and what works for me might not work for others. Thanks for watching and have a great season! Dan Schmidt

If you get passthrough on a Pumpkin you will on a deer . I see to many TV shows the arrow is not a passthrough , and the arrow falls out . Im old school Finger shooter believe in complete passthrough Bleed them out both sides not just 1 hole . Toss them Junk Open on impact blades in the trash get a good fixed Razer head Cutting a hole not punching one , Kinetic energy Loss punching a hole. I use a 35 # women bow do to Injuries 250 grain arrow 100 grain Broadhead 11% FOC kill them , not wounding them. Know your Shots know your limits 25 to 30 yards . I seen guys take 40 to 80 yard shots . I have to ask why , Cant get up on a Deer at 20 yards ?? Take the risk of losing the deer .

Lots of things wrong with this test!! Using a piece of wood which is fiber and to compare that to bone mass that does not have the same properties . Any thing can hit a piece of seasoned wood and split it. Try hitting the bone and the results will be way different. You wonder why so many hunters are misinformed . You should have done a better job in trying to make your point. Not sorry that I disagree with this test!!

Actually bone is very much fibrous. It's structure is made up of aligned collagen proteins. It is not a solid homogeneous mass. And bone does split. Google pictures of bone splitting and single bevel. Wood isn't a perfect substitute for bone but it does share many similarities, enough to get the point across.

2:16 looks the grain of the dried wood split on being hit by the arrow, which doesnt give the arrow a fair chance to even attempt going through it. Also with such a light piece of wood the amount give is much higher. Deer dont have give. This is a poor attempt at an example from these so called experts.
