Just got this yesterday and honestly didn't know Arrow hooks up the special features like this. All in ONE disc too! Honestly Pitch Black is one of my favorite movies, really enjoyed it.
Yeah, I've been getting very annoyed with Arrow cramming everything on one disk too. For what they charge, we should get a separate disc for bonus features.
@@thematrixhasyou3521 1. You can't play UHD on a DVD player. 2. I didn't say anyone else was annoyed. Just me. 3. And a separate disc for extras allows more room for image data on the feature disc. Better resolution, and more data in the image. 4. By your own logic, a person shouldn't own ANY discs because playing even 1 disc wears out the player faster. Whether it's a movie or special features doesn't matter if a disc is still a disc.
Arrow weren't the ones who actually did the remastering of this movie (as with pretty much any other title Universal licenses out), Universal pretty much does everything in house and licenses out the masters to whatever company wants them whenever they say "exclusively restored" they're just saying it's the first time those new masters were ever being seen publicly, Paramount does the same thing whenever they license out
People cancel orders because it doesn't have a slipcase? 🤨 Just stupid. What is this slipcase obsession about? Who cares ffs. Are you a film lover or a slipcase lover? I find this whole obsession ridiculous tbh.
I love a good slipcase but I agree, it's hardly the most important thing. The film quality and special features are the main thing.... I like the latter to help flesh out a more thorough understanding of the film and it's history/production but ultimately if there's only a bare bones release then yeah the picture/sound quality are the main things.... packaging is a bonus though it's always appreciated and loved when that has some focus on it... (Like that magnificent Arrow Gamera set!)...
watched the pitch black trilogy last month - first and third movie still hold up well. The second movie shoulda gotten a major trim job only thing interesting is when he's underground.
@CoinOpTV I know what you mean (and i don't disagree), but I kinda love how *_The Chronicles of Riddick_* is so completely different to *_Pitch Black._* It takes the character from this lean 'n mean action horror into this ornate space opera. It's like if *_Prometheus_* was the first sequel to *_Alien_* or something. Bonkers. Plus, it gave us a world in which Vin Diesel and Dame Judi Dench share a film credit, which is just delightful.
@@JeffRauseo not trying to bust your balls. It is just when you show stills from the movie in the review, people assume that is a spot in the movie you wanted to highlight/discuss. So when you show a still from a movie that isn't the movie you are reviewing, it kind of hurts the credibility of the review. I always assumed you took pictures with a camera of the frames you wanted to discuss in the review

Thanks for mentioning Arrow videos several months back. I've been keeping out for them. Their stuff is clearly done with a lot of care and respect, and the quality shows. I can only imagine how good it looks on 4K from Arrow. I'll definitely be picking up this one. I've recently bought Miracle Mile from Arrow, it has to be imported from the UK since they're not available in US. Luckily for me, I have a region free player.
Picked mine up, one thing thats overlooked with arrow is their sleeves are reversible. I like that, you can change the look of it on your shelf whenever you feel.
Talking about Pitch Black but at 4:13 you used an image from the sequel Chronicles Or Riddick (hopefully Arrow will get their hands on that to do a 4k also).
i’m surprised yet slightly confused.. i hear you mention that this was Arrow’s 1st release, but that doesn’t match up with my experience: i was 1st introduced to Arrow because of the 2017 AMAZING 4K restoration boxset packaging of “Donnie Darko” released in 2017(imprinted on all 3 BD discs), yet i just got the Arrow “Pitch Black” BD restoration & both discs/packaging are (c)2020… so, hence my confusion on the mention of “Arrow’s first restoration”… but thanks for the review nonetheless!
Question for Jeff, I’ve never been able to figure this out but you’d be the guy to ask. So I use a 2.1 sound bar setup for my audio and any time I’m not selecting either a Dolby Digital 5.1 or a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 or 2.0 audio track for my movies it’s always mixed horribly and the dialogue is quieter than the sound effects and I’m constantly adjusting the volume. It’s mainly if it’s a Dolby Atmos or a Dolby TrueHD 7.1 mix where it does this so I find myself favoring discs that include those audio tracks I mentioned. Why is that? Is it because the Atmos and 7.1 tracks are downmixed to a 2.1 speaker?
I just got this a few hours ago. Haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but looking forward to it. I was surprised to hear people cancelling because if no skip cover. I personally don't like them, never do we the point...
Excellent review for an excellent movie! This movie as always been in my top 5, having the DVD, after the BD and now the 4K Steelbook limited edition, A/V are superb and this 4K is a must for any sci-fi fan 😁 The BD was looking great but the 4K is way, way, way much better 😆 Question : are you aware of a upcoming release of "The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay" in 4K, which is part 2 of the series? Can't find anything on the Net about it. Only thing I found is the info for the 4 part of the franchise which is made by the same director as Pitch Black 😀
I JUST watched this tonight and I was mostly pleased with the PQ. I disable DV on my setup as I'm usually not pleased with it (TCL R617) but the HDR10 image was good. I saw some noise in some darker scenes but the 5.1 mix is phenomenal.
Got this 4K release of Pitch Black as well and hope they will also do Chronicles of Riddick and Riddick on 4K. Looking forward to the sequel as well, Riddick 4: Furya.
I saw this movie in the theater before it went nationwide. They had us fill out a form with our thoughts on the movie to see if it had enough positive feedback to warrant general release in theaters. I gave it the thumbs up!
One thing I’ve noticed, is Arrow doesn’t include a blu-ray or digital code in their 2 4K releases thus far. I can do without the blu-ray, but would like a digital 4K copy to go with the movies. I realize they are just getting in the 4K game, but highly disappointed in how they don’t offer blu-ray/digital codes like most studio releases do. Not necessarily a deal breaker, just very disappointing.
Been so interested in hearing how this would transfer with the stark contrast in lightning. Thg 1st DVD I ever bought, serendipitous it's Arrow's 1st 4k. Hopefully Best Buy carries it so I can use some reward points 👍
I saw this in store bought it no questioned asked. Its one of my favorites and even if the release would have been a minor update i'd have bought it because I want to support Arrow and what they're doing. Companies don't want to bother to release on 4k as its not viable so I want to support what I love with my wallet. Money speaks.
Watched last night, was amazing. Very happy about my first Arrow purchase. Was surprised they use the ps3 case (probably has an official name) which I liked in the black. Would like to see other companies use this style.
Thanks for the review man. I love this movie and I've had the 4k Arrow release sitting on my desk since its release. This review has just bumped it up on the watch list.
Great transfer, however there's a couple of spots where the screen goes black but the audio goes on. I don't remember that happening on the old blu ray. It's like a couple frames went missing. One spot is on the planet. Since 4k players don't show the time on the display i can't tell you where this happens. I sent the disc back for replacement. Its not the the player or the tv since no other 4k disc i own does this.
What is the benefit/ advantage of buying an Arrow Video release? Why the premium price? Do they do a better job mastering the video? I checked their website and there is not much information. Any information would be helpful.
I recently bought the big ass Arrow Video Gamera set and boy, it definitely is my favorite thing within my collection. I would recommend it but sadly it seems it's only gonna have a one time run. So if you wanna get your hands on it, you might have to go after those aftermarket prices.

Great video. That box art is so cool. I love it when they go the extra mile to include like the reversible cover. Makes it so much more worth collecting. Have the other Riddick movies received a 4k release?

Lucky me, I am a big fan of this movie. So glad it looks great. Great price point to. Pre-ordered from Amazon the day this was announced at $50, but ended up at $20- can't beat that. Oh darn no Blu-Ray included so I have to keep my Steelbook Blu-Ray Edition. ... Lol 😂😁😂
Speaking of Arrow: I see from your collection in the background that you have the original MGM Blu-ray of The Apartment. Did you ever get the Arrow Blu-ray of that film? I understand it's a better video transfer than the original, though the audio is about the same. I got the Special Edition from the UK a few years back.
One of my favourite movies. On 4k at last! Too bad there are so many babies out there whining about no slip cover and calling it lame. Oh well, first world problems I guess. Thanks for the great and UNBIASED reviews Jeff.
