This fantastic and informative review was why I bought a Husky. I went for the Ultimate after watching one of your other videos (Grand Tundra I think) where you flew it on 4S but with a different prop and got great performance and great duration. It also gave me AS3X/SAFE which never existed when I last flew models so I had to try it out (though actually hardly ever use it, but it's fun to have!). With the kind of flying I like to do and that it likes, I fly a lot of half throttle and doing STOL stuff and I reckon the flight duration could be pushed to 15 mins with 30% remaining on a 4S 5000mah Lipo. One thing that I need to modify is those plastic undercarriage fairings - they have popped off more than once on a bounced landing. I'm working on the best way to modify them but all thoughts welcome if anybody reads this. I will probably modify the flaps to slotted at some point too, though flying off grass I'm finding the standard wheels adequate (though those fairings might not pop off so readily with more wheel suspension!). The Husky is a fantastic plane though - not the best if you have to rig on the field (I don't as my campervan holds it assembled) and I tidied up the wing wiring connections as best I could also. I'd have loved to buy a Carbon Cub but its too big to transport assembled and a lot more money if you have an accident with it!
That is awesome Mike! Love the Husky. On the gear covers...I held a lighter on the tip of a hobby knife, then burned small slots on either side of the gear wire in two separate places (slots parallel to the wire). Then I used small zip ties and zip tied the covers to the wire. You only see a tiny bit of the zip tie on the outside, and they stay put.
@@ModelAV8RChannel Brilliant advice, I was thinking along those lines but hadn't worked out the details. Multiplex hinged flaps also a possible winter project after your video advice 😉👍
Best review of this plane by far, hope the manufacturers are paying attention 👌 Dude you have awesome depth perception, I that that plane was going into the woods for sure on several occasions 😂😂 Good job.
Thanks Håvard! That's some high praise buddy! Man I have had decent depth perception every since I can remember, but it really got honed in when I got into long range rifle shooting. (now that I said that I'll put one in the trees...Lol)
Very nice. I love Cub Type planes. Looks like it fly very very nice. it was amazing to see it doing all that on just a 4S 2200... that is a big plane..
Love the reviews of all the STOL/Bush flying. Watched this review when I found one on marketplace recently and based on your review I picked it up in like new shape for $150. If you could post some upgrade ‘how to’ videos it would be awesome! Slotted flap hinge install, vortex generators, dubro tires, etc etc etc… Again awesome channel and reviews!
Hi Adam, Very late to the party on commenting, but what an awesome plane! Your review definitely got me off the fence and buying the plane. I did buy the Ultimate version, which is a powerhouse and super fun. I added the 4 1/2 inch dubro tires, which work great and makes touch and goes so fun! I usually run an 1800 mAH 6s in her, so weight is definitely not an issue. (I also use the 3200s and it flies well, just heavier.) I set the timer to 7 minutes and get great flights with it. This bird has the best landing gear of any plane I have. In fact, the whole plane is super strong! Really love it! Thanks for all your fine reviews. I get something out of each and every episode!
Adam. I love STOL planes and 100% agree with the dubro tire upgrade. Love all your upgrades to this model. Just spot on. These companies could use more common-sense down to earth folks like you to review these models (prior) to release. Thanks for sharing my friend.
Thanks very much...really appreciate the kind words! I think most companies get what they can for a very low price on this level plane. They aren't going to put a $25 to $40 set of tires on them. That's all good though...still a lot of plane for only $250. The 5s version though...that was a little silly. At least they came to their senses...Lol.
Hi Adam! Here's your admirer from Belgium again. For the second time I can't leave this video without praising your skills. I do like your flying style! That being said, I have the Funcub xl and now I bought the Husky. So I was wondering why Hitec (Multiplex in our country) made these slotted flaps and Arrows didn't. Ofcourse it has to do with selling prices in mind also. The Funcub xl is a lot more expensive. Now I 've seen your Husky with the slotted flaps I will certainly make the same mod. Thanks for the tip! I also ordered the vortex generators but still haven't got enough information about where, how to place them. I've made some calculations using measurements from some HH planes. Especially the little Sportscub. I found out that something like between 15 and 20% of the chord lenght would do the trick. That is measured from the front of the wing. Ofcourse it differs from plane to plane but it's always difficult to know the right place on the wing to glue them. Are there some aerodynamic theories out there about this subject? I have difficulties finding them. I do want to place vortex generators on the best effective place and I don't have a windtunnel ;-) What I would like to know is 1. Best form (construction) 2. Best space between them 3. How far from the leading edge to put them (front of vortex). Now I just take a good guess taking into account my before calculations. Actually playing "copy cat". There must be a clear theorie somewhere! Don't you think so? Greatings from Belgium and keep up your very, very interesting vids Adam!!
Thanks very much for the very kind words...much appreciated! Congrats on getting the Husky...great plane. I think Arrows did regular flaps as that is what the full scale Aviat Husky A1-C has. You see slotted flaps on Huskys but they are aftermarket. Airframes Alaska makes them for many planes (talking full scale). They even make some double slotted flaps called "PSTOL" flaps. As far as the VG's...I can tell you what I did- The VG's are the Grand Tundra VG's. The trailing edge of the VG's (the wider part FYI) is lined up perfectly with the front of the tiny molded in VG's. They start with the trailing edge corner of the first Tundra VG touching the front edge corner of the 2nd molded VG. They are spaced 1 1/16th in apart (from trailing edge to trailing edge) and there are 16 per wing, so 32 total. Check out the about section of our channel...the channel e mail is there. E mail me and I'll send you some pics. Hope this helps!
Good stuff! Having one of these myself, I can almost "feel" the airplane watching you fly... lol The only thing more impressive than the piloting is the camera work! Great video about an awesome airplane! I totally agree on the wheels too. I used the large Tundra wheels on mine and like them a lot.
Hey man thank you so much! I read your comment to Heidi (Lovely wife, camera girl extraordinaire)...made her smile! She is awesome. Yeah all these Bush planes need better tires than they come with it seems like. It is a really great plane!
@@ModelAV8RChannel I really think it would stand a chance, Adam, but it's a big beastie to store - I'd have to get rid of several models to give this hangar space. Probably won't hold me back from getting something like this in the future, though :o))
Absolutely superb my friend! Just watched from start to finish (as always...) and I can't say enough about the direction you're heading. Heidi crushed it as usual, and your flying style was/is very well polished indeed! A true bush pilot for sure! The foliage and scenery couldn't have been any better...what a backdrop to highlight a sport-scale bush plane! I've been eyeballing this thing since it was released so long ago, and NOW, because of you, I have to order one! I think she'll be PERFECT out at my secret dry lake bed testing facility! Could you post up the link to the Dubro tires as well? All the best to you brother!
Hey brother John! Thanks man! We try. Funny you said my flying style is polished...next week we will do some teaching, expose a skill set of mine that needs some polishing, and show you the practice...good and BAD...Lol. I think you'll LOVE the Husky...I'd have one over any other sport or sport scale Bush style plane on the market at this time....other than the CZ 150T...which really isn't a fair comparison as its a giant scale plane and twice the price. I actually got the Du Bro's from Amazon...they are a must in my opinion. 4 1/2 seems to be perfect to do the job yet allow the airframe to retain the aerobatic capability.
So so many good Stol Planes available these days but im really really happy i chose the 1500mm X-Fly Tasman its got the Largest Lightest Pnumatic Tundra Tires on the market. The Top Loading Battery Compartment is Enormous and you could get a 12s battery in it easiy. You should check one out Adam.
James you're right, a lot of great STOL planes out there. I've never flown a Tasman, but people with them like you all seem to like them. If I get an opportunity to fly one I'd like to give one a go!
Have always liked the Arrows Husky, nice review. I like the H King Avios Tundra and Grand Tundra tires for replacements, they are both very light and soft. Nice one Adam, Jeff in LA USA
Thank you Jeff! I've tried the Grand Tundra tires on my FMS Super Cub, but they tore up (chunks coming off) on the first day I took them out. They did ok on the grass, but when I landed on the gravel...they didn't like that too much...lol. Sometimes I'm rough on my Bush Planes.
Adam another great review I to have the v1 wonderful bird basically a puffed up timber kavan from sig have really sweet Ballon tires 1/4 of the weight of dubro and if those were turkeys I do here them terds all day I live in the northern rockies mountains my yard is full of them and crap all over the runway 👍👍👍✌
Thanks Fur Ball! It is such a great plane. I have some Kavans...they are light but a good bit harder than the Du Bro's. We do have Turkey's around that field...
Arrows has some really nice planes at good prices, I picked up a push glider from them, Prodigy, its a fun beginner's bird! Hobby Zone / Hobby King should give you a kick back on reviewing there product's for them, hopefully there paying attention!!! Nice flight and nice filming it in action! Semper Fi!
Thanks very much! I would think the grand tundra hinges will work, but I don't really have any to do a video with as mine is already done. The geometry is pretty easy to figure out though.
Hi mitch I'm very impressed with your assessment of the husky 1800mm, my tires are definitely been changed. I was wondering what you would recommend size motor and esc to upgrade as I'm on the recommended 3s and find it a little bit needed more power 🔋 anyway keep up the great work thanks.
Really like this channel. Have had my husky for a few months but not got a lot of airtime on it yet. Want to get a plug-in wing sorted with something like a max-loc / ashlock connector. Seen some people building-in MPX connectors but that looks a little involved! Would you consider building an Evolution Models Fusion ii or Mega Fusion? UK design and manufacture, but it's sorely lacking decent RU-vid content, especially of the level of analysis you do.
Thanks very much Mitch for the kind words...so glad you like our channel! Thank you for subscribing! We have some cool stuff for 2022 planned. That would be the one thing about the Husky I don't like...the wires from the wing are surprisingly hard to fish through the fuse. Luckily we store and transport ours assembled (Just does go in our Explorer). I checked out the Fusions...they look like a fun plane and a pretty simple kit. Their little micro Fusion is cool too. They seem to be an old school 3Dish plane?? Got a lot planned to put on the bench at the moment, but it is something we could entertain later possibly. Thanks again for the comment and the kind words Mitch...glad you are now part of the Model AV8R family!
Thanks very much! I studied the location on pictures of full scale Huskys...the way it ended up working is the new VG's trailing edge is lined up on the same line the molded VG's leading edge is.
I don't James. I used some old Fun Cub hinges. Pretty easy mod. You can use these hatch hinges, they'll work the same way - www.amazon.com/uxcell-Hinges-Adjustable-Hatch-Airplane/dp/B07PNRBY2R/ref=sxin_14_pa_sp_search_thematic_sspa?content-id=amzn1.sym.d17ca69f-1a39-4f7d-a62f-e5dff4cfd6d8%3Aamzn1.sym.d17ca69f-1a39-4f7d-a62f-e5dff4cfd6d8&crid=YO0NTZIGP09G&cv_ct_cx=rc+airplane+hinges&keywords=rc+airplane+hinges&pd_rd_i=B07PNRBY2R&pd_rd_r=2f464469-682f-4bc3-98f2-fdc29f6cc19e&pd_rd_w=1rdho&pd_rd_wg=vwk7W&pf_rd_p=d17ca69f-1a39-4f7d-a62f-e5dff4cfd6d8&pf_rd_r=PF2DDYMN82DJHPSW1Y6A&qid=1703621317&sbo=RZvfv%2F%2FHxDF%2BO5021pAnSA%3D%3D&sprefix=rc+airplane+hinges%2Caps%2C95&sr=1-3-364cf978-ce2a-480a-9bb0-bdb96faa0f61-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9zZWFyY2hfdGhlbWF0aWM&psc=1
Thanks bud! We get 5 min on a 2200 slinging it around like we did in the video, and 7 min if I fly it scale. It also flies well on a 3200, but I have more 2200s.
Hello Sir... I also have a Husky and would love to make my flaps slotted.. What hinges would you suggest for the mod? Can't seem to find anything in the size I would need... Would appreciate any advise. Thank You - Grant
Hey Grant. I used some hinges I had from an old Multiplex Fun Cub. You can order the plastic parts set for an E-flite SR-22T. It is 16 bucks or so, but it has hinges in it you could use to do that. www.horizonhobby.com/product/plastic-parts-set-sr-22t/EFL5965.html You also might be able to make these hatch hinges work... www.motionrc.com/products/benchcraft-hatch-hinges-white-10-pack-bct5044-019?gclid=Cj0KCQjw0bunBhD9ARIsAAZl0E2c0q1aImj-5YYJEcIjRm2Pa3YWBkL3J_LmQn1TrCZW3CSQXsmenC4aAlUWEALw_wcB
Thanks for the help.. well.. I've made the conversion.. found this hobby store online if anyone is interested in the hingess.. Grayson Hobby ($9.99) I installed 5 hinges for each flap.. tighten them up quit a bit... So Sir.. Question.. what mod if any did you do on the flap itself? Shaping for example... round the hinge side of the flap?? anything on the trailing edge of the wing...? Haven't flown it yet with the slotted flap mod... to cold to fly outside.. come on Spring....
Hi added the dubros to my husky ultimate. Seems nose heavy. It looks balanced at 80mm but likes to dip the nose. Did you do anything to correct for the added weight
Hey Stan, thanks for watching! Since you have the Ultimate version are you flying it on 6s? I'm assuming you used the 4 1/2 in Big Wheels like we did...any bigger and they get much heavier. We fly ours (original 4s version) on a 4s 2200 which is smaller than most use, that saves a bit of weight there. Also, the Ultimate is a slightly heavier plane right off the bat. It has heavier metal gear servos, a bigger motor/ ESC, and the air frame is reinforced in some areas. Plus if you are using a heavier battery I'm betting your plane is heavier than ours by several ounces, and maybe a lot heavier if you're using a really big pack like a 4s or 6s 4000 or 5000mah. I still think the Ultimate can perform fine. That wing can handle more weight for sure, but a lot more weight will present some real differences in our planes performance and yours, especially in slow flight characteristics. I recommend using as light a battery as you can and put it in the battery tray as far back as you can. You may also try getting the balance a bit more to the rear. I'd do that slowly though...a couple or maybe 3mm at a time and test the stall up high. The change in battery might be all you need to do to fix what you're feeling. Hope this is helpful. Happy flying, and if you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask.
@@ModelAV8RChannel I'm running 6s 4000mah placed as far back on the tray without sitting on top of the stability gyro and keeping 2 straps on it. Still felt nose heavy. Funny you mention wing load. Took it out on its maiden yesterday. 2 minutes into the flight after a vertical then running half throttle I heard a snap. Landed quickly as it was acting funny to find both wing struts pulled out of the foam at the back of the wing and one of the braces broke where it snaps into the wing. Landed safely with a little rash on the front wing tips
@@stanorlik5972 Wow, never heard of one doing that! That kinda sucks. Hopefully you can get her glued up better than stock. I think going with a much smaller pack will take a bunch of the weight out. Maybe a 2200 6s as far back as you can get it will do the trick.
What a good flying skill.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 I want to buy this plane. Wait already 3 month. It is available, but a lot of work and money goes to our home at the moment. So..... I hope in March I can buy this beauty. 🙂
