Today I learned that I want to be Georgia O'Keeffe.
@lauriebolles3149

When I was truly on my own and in my first apartment (upper floor in a house) I started making my own bread. When I moved out my landlord told me he was going to miss the smell of the bread baking. I was 23 at the time. When I came home to my parent's house, I would bake on a Sunday my brother and his family always came over for supper and always helped themselves to the fresh baked bread. After a while I gave up on making the bread. Of course if I just changed what day I baked that would have solved the problem. I'm now 66 living in my own house and you know I might just start making my own bread again.

Tiago Miranda In the US, health supplements are not regulated by the FDA which is...odd, to say the least
@DanThePropMan
@DanThePropMan 7 лет назад
+Tiago Miranda Not only are nutritional supplements not regulated by the FDA, there is a law specifically limiting their ability to do so. (The DSHEA.) Now, whether Sarah/The Art Assignment intended it to be a joke is open to interpretation. But CookiesXSugar was *calling* it a joke in order to call attention to this fact.
@thatjillgirl
@thatjillgirl 7 лет назад
"In the US, health supplements are not regulated by the FDA which is...odd, to say the least" Well it is and it isn't. Nutritional supplements occupy a strange grey area between food and drugs. Many of them are pretty much food products, but the way people take them in large doses means they behave like drugs. So yeah, they absolutely need to be regulated, but creating legal language to define at what point they become the purview of the FDA is difficult.
@cookiesxsugar9447
@cookiesxsugar9447 7 лет назад
Both food and drugs are the responsibility of the FDA (Food and Drug administration), so something being in between food and drugs would put it right in the FDA's wheelhouse. Nutritional claims about food are something the FDA regulates.

YES! I just discovered it about a month ago, and I have to agree. Life changing. Either I'd guess as to volume, or I'd dread it, so much that I would not do some recipes with honey, molases, corn syrup.... Yep, they're as easy as flour now. I'm so happy to see an art cooking video about O'Keeffe and her life - and especially about New Mexico. I was lucky enough to attend the Georgia O'Keeffe summer art school for girls back in the 90s and during that time they took us on a trip to see her home in Abiquiu - which I certainly didn't fully appreciate as much back then as I do now. Please keep making these videos, I think they're fantastic!
@theartassignment

I also took an underappreciated trip to Abiquiu in my youth. Very much regretting not being more awake to the experience and have begun plotting my return. Thanks for watching! And commenting! More Art Cooking is in the works.

aaa!!! This video was especially touching to me. I became obsessed with Georgia O'Keeffe when I was 16, and have loved her work and life ever since. I worked at a super greasy fast food joint for about 10 hours a day, and on my 30 minute government mandated break, I would sit on top of the restaurant's safe and read as much as I could from a biography about Georgia before i had to return to work. When I had time off, I would make bread, because it talked about Georgia making it, which got be interested in cooking as one of my creative outlets. I do have to say though, I've never milled my own flour lol. Glad your breakfast was yummy and thanks so much for the video!
@theartassignment
@theartassignment 7 лет назад
I think O'Keeffe would be honored to know she was a respite during your fast food shift breaks :). And I will say milling the flour was actually really fun and satisfying, if tiring. I have since tried it with different kinds of grains, and plan to keep experimenting. It feels less insane when you actually do it, and the flour is more nutritious having not been separated from the germ to make it shelf stable.
@KannikCat

That was incredible, not only for the art and the food but also/especially for the great and witty writing! So many wonderful lines in this episode, and all delivered with precision. :D Very well done! (Also... I couldn't help but think of a "100 Days: Wheat Milling Edition" episode ;)

Ok i get it now. I was reluctant to keep watching after I saw the Frida chiles rellenos video. I saw a bunch of people comment on the accent and the preparation and some of the commentary; I didn't add a comment on that video bc I thought that it had been said, but I've realized that maybe I was just being protective of Frida, spanish, and Mexico. I'm glad I got over it. So what if some people can't bear the heat of peppers, so what if the pronunciation is different. You cooked, you researched, and you are your own person. So thank you Sarah and thank you team. These videos are cute and entertaining and informative. And you know what my family's recipe and prep is probably much more different than Frida's.

I was just at the Santa Fe O'keeffe Museum! This was very neat to watch!:) As someone who moved to NM recently everyone would be appalled of your use of "Green" chile, it's the "New Mexico chile" they come in Green (not ripe chili that's been roasted) and Red (ripe)

I am very new to the world of art, so new in fact that when I decided to take an art history paper at university this semester I had felt a little like I was a child being dragged around the art gallery and not knowing quite what was going on, but with this series ( which has helped me grasp some of the key concepts) and some persistence, I've really enjoyed my time exploring the world of art history and visual culture. Thank you for this series. From Hannah, a now slightly less confused art viewer

One thing I've learned about breadmaking is salt kills yeast and heat kills yeast. So adding the salt to the yeast was a bad idea. it's better to add salt lasts after you dumped in your flour. Also you don't have to use hot water or milk at all. if the milk is pasteurized measure the amount of water and milk you need add the yeast and sweetener and leave to get foamy. You will have to leave it a bit long than the recipe will state because the liquid has to come up to room temp. Also beware of over kneading the bread and punching down to much. just use your splayed finger to poke the bread down don't pulverize it.

I loved this! Just FYI, in New Mexico "green chile" does not refer to any chile which is green, but a specific species of chile which is cultivated only in New Mexico (and Colorado, but the growing conditions yield a much milder chile and I'm pointedly ignoring their attempt to steal our native cuisine). Poblanos are delicious, but a very different sort of chile - milder, less fruity, more sturdy. I hope you have the chance to try true New Mexican green chile some time soon!

Enjoyable! 2 tops: Whole wheat bread doesn’t rise much, yours was normal. The temperature of the water is crucial, use a yogurt thermometer. Too hot will kill the yeast, too cold and it won’t go off.

"...but my arms are tired and i'll say we are there", that reminds me so much of john green deciding the asparragus were done because he was bored of waiting ... thinking of art and food, my art teacher would say things like "like Titan(?) who died eating ice cream in 14th century italy..." ' or cezanne, who "bought plastic fruit so it would not go bad and riun his composittion", and would point out some fruits in dutch still lifes, because back in the day for a dutch family to have x fruit was a luxury....
