Yan Sun Art Museum's building is a typical Art Deco style building. The former Ohio Power Company building, which is located at 604 Main St. of downtown Zanesville, is on the National Register of Historic Places of America.
It features many general characteristics of Art Deco. For instance, the building has an upward feeling; vertical lines; as well as combination of modern, geometric patterns and graceful, flowing shapes.
According to Ohio Historic Places Dictionary, it is the "finest example, indeed one of only three examples of Art Deco architecture in the city" and "the interior treatment using the smooth, shiny surface of the locally produced tile is another characteristic of the Art Deco mode found in this structure."
On July 26th, 1930, this beautiful Art Deco building had its Official Opening Day.
We are so proud to add new life into this landmark architecture through exhibiting wonderful artworks by many artists, making it a gathering location of artists, art lovers, and art collectors.
The architecture design was by Vernon Redding and Associates Architects. Vernon Redding was a famed Mansfield Ohio architect. Many of his architectural designs became landmarks and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places of America, including Ohio Power Company (Zanesville Ohio), Ashland County Courthouse (Ashland, Ohio), Ohio Theatre (Loudonville, Ohio), and The Kern House (Mansfield, Ohio).
The marvelous tile art on the wall and floor was designed and manufactured by The Mosaic Tile Co. They are painted and glazed with various shades of green, brown, blue, orange, and cream. The Mosaic Tile Company of Zanesville, Ohio, was established in 1894 by Karl Langerbeck and Herman Mueller. Its products included both plain and decorative tiles, as well as art tiles. The mosaic Tile Company Zanesville was among the largest ceramic tile companies in the country.
And the beautiful face brick of this building was made by Hydraulic-Press Brick Company Roseville, Ohio, a branch of Hydraulic-Press Brick Company founded by Edward Canfield Sterling in St. Louis, Missouri, and incorporated in 1868.
Hydraulic-Press Brick Company manufactured plain and ornamental bricks, as well as salt-glazing bricks.
Art Deco style became a major style of architecture and related fields such as furniture, design, and fine art from the 1920’s to 1930’s in numerous American cities.
The origin of Art Deco was the 1925 L'Exposition Internationale des Artes Decoratifs et Industriels Moderne in Paris.
The LeVeque Tower in Columbus, Ohio, is also an Art Deco architecture. It used to be the tallest building in Columbus from 1927 to 1974.
"A View of Columbus" by Yan Sun depicts the LeVeque Tower in Columbus, Ohio. This painting is acrylic on canvas, 48 inches by 30 inches. Private Collection.
