Another finished art journal! This is the first one of 2019: a Stillman and Birn Epsilon Series sketchbook, nicknamed the 'no thanks journal' because of the sticker on the front cover.
If you like the sticker, you can find it in my shop! www.etsy.com/ca/listing/65370...
This is probably my most personal video to date.... I definitely rambled a bit but I guess I had a lot to say about this one.
As per the usual, find my artwork on instagram or tumblr: @mercurialmilk
Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed this video! Let me know what pages stand out to you or any suggestions on videos you'd like to see from me.
xx

It's not trauma that makes you better, stronger person. It's overcoming it. Overcoming trauma is a good thing, so yes.
@MercurialMilk
@MercurialMilk 4 года назад
I dont think I explained it right.... Seeing the good that comes from overcoming trauma is important because being bogged down with negativity is no way to live.... but living a life free of trauma is better, ya know? like, if you could live your life again without a horrible traumatic thing happening, wouldnt you? Wouldnt you rather it didnt happen?
@AaAa-kv9fj

Oh shit, I would, everybody would, if there was a time machine give it to me right now, but there's none. I am very blessed, I'm really fine, but I acknowledge, some folks have really shitty lives because of trauma for many many years, and I would give much for way to overturn it! And I think it is also very important, that you spoke about this topic! People say: "what does not kill you, makes you stronger!" But really, what doesn't kill you, gives you trauma, and it is a loooong way, before it makes you stronger... Take care of yourself

@@MercurialMilk I know this is an old comment but trauma and experience in overcoming the obstacles of life is what makes you grow as a person. I wouldn't be the empathetic, caring person I am now I I had lived a life free of challenge. Its the soil that allows you to grow, people who have been spared from the harsh realities of the world usually live in their own and find it hard to empathize and connect with others

Mercurial Milk you are so spot on. Yes, getting over the trauma teaches you & can make you a better person, but what people don't appreciate is that getting over the trauma is NOT a given. So many people do not, cannot, overcome the horrors they have experienced. Jauntily claiming that trauma makes one better is dismissive of the agony & the horrendous amount of work that it takes to even recover let alone become a better human being. Thank you for your instinctive understanding of this & keep up your beautiful work

The trauma thing reminds me of how people often say the trauma made you kinder. Like, No Susan. I was always kind. I often think of this one quote from a book written by Brandon Sanderson: “Ten spears go to battle,” he whispered, “and nine shatter. Did that war forge the one that remained? No, Amaram. All the war did was identify the spear that would not break.”

I love ,love your journaling! I too donated a lot of my stuffed animals when I was a teenager. Every once in awhile if I go to a thrift store I will see one that catches my eye and I bring it home with me. I have an old fashioned type Winnie the Pooh and a big Eyore. We are never to old for stuffed love! I agree with you on the trauma also, sometimes it’s hard to overcome and I know I would be much more self confident and out going if it didn’t happen to me. I’m sorry for all the hurt and pain you have gone through, your journals are very inspiring and I found mine to be a great coping mechanism. Much love to you! ❤️🦋

I just found your work, it is simply beautiful because of your skill as an artist and your authenticity in what you show in your art. Trauma question is one I really started asking when I had my own children and they have grown up without trauma other than difficult times we had as a family in the 2008 crash. I see them unself conscious, comfortable in their own skin, unafraid to show their true selves. I was traumatized so young I do wonder who would I be if I had been able to stay young, free and happy. Of course I made a good life but it took a lot of work and I could have put that energy towards other things if I did not have so much trauma to overcome. Inspiring and thank you for sharing

My thoughts on the trauma talk: I don't think I want to belive, that you have to get through a trauma to become a good person, but I think it can be realy helpful to be able to see the positive things that can happen after a trauma. Of course it's not fun to have to go through a traume, but if you can't see anything positive and only concentrate on the negetiv parts, then it's way harder to overcome your fear and anxiety. Like the famous saying sais: if life gives you lemons, make lemonade out of it. Well, that is just my opinion... Do you kind a get what I mean?
@lucys.c.5307
@lucys.c.5307 4 года назад
Sarah Jokascha my therapist said the same thing. “No one deserves trauma” although people get some positive things out of it, what it leaves behind is worse; insecurities, fear, anxiety panic attacks etc. My therapist always says she doesn’t encourage anyone to enter bad situations only to get something out of it BUT if put into those situations, might as well use that pain to motivate you forward instead of sulking and regretting and having negative thoughts. I think that’s why a lot of people focus on the positive things that came out of it, I don’t think they are encouraging or grateful for these traumatic experiences. It’s just a change in mindset to help them self heal, more like closure so they can move on from these experiences if that makes sense. I could be totally wrong but that’s what I did to heal from my traumatic experience.

@@lucys.c.5307 yes, that's exactly the thing that I thought!
@MercurialMilk
@MercurialMilk 4 года назад
This is a great way of thinking of it! I think it comes at the end of the cycle when processing something traumatic. You have to see something good because that is the human condition. It's how we move forward. It was just hard for me to see so many people say the equivalent of "the trauma made me better" instead of: "I grew in SPITE of my trauma". If that makes sense.

Thanks, love your work! Xx
@MercurialMilk
@MercurialMilk 4 года назад
I'm planning a 'best brushes' video soon! but the choice between acrylic and watercolor is tough. It's really all about what you prefer so I suggest getting a intro pack of both (watercolor: Mungyo 12 color palette is the BEST) and (acrylic: liquitex basics is great). brushes for acrylic dont really matter, I just use a variety pack with stiff bristles. but watercolor brushes are more finicky. You want really soft and flexible and they can sometimes be more expensive. Hope that helps!! xx

I just did, and the only time I talk about my family is during the "ugh" page. It's interesting that you think I'm being ungrateful because to me, that page was all about someone intentionally disrespecting my boundaries. I guess art is interpreted very differently by different people, which is OK. But I dont think you're being very fair.... you dont know anything about my relationship with my family. It could be great or I could be exactly in the same position as you... I've never gone into detail about it. So, I'm just going to say: none of us know what other people are going through. I wanted to ask you what do you use to seal the paint in journals like that so the paint or led pencil ect is protected and long lasting?
@MercurialMilk
@MercurialMilk 4 года назад
Pencil, charcoal, color pencil: i use a product called SpectraFix, which is all natural and safe. It's a bit hard to find, and it needs 5-6 layers but it's much safer than clear aerosol sprays. If I'm really worried, I'll add a layer of really watered down matte mod podge on top to seal it all in. 100% no smudging. Acrylic paint: I make sure to use satin or matte paint as glossy paint tends to stick together when the pages are closed. I will also add a thin layer of dorland's wax, especially along the crease of the page. That will keep it from sticking.

17:50 i do see your point however life isnt a walk in the park. If nothing is a challenge then youre not gonna grow as a person. Yes, positive events can definitely help you become a better person and make you realize thoughts you never had before but trauma and negative events do this also. Its about having a healthy balance between the two
@MercurialMilk
@MercurialMilk 4 года назад
I think you are confusing negative events in life with actual trauma. Negative events = losing a job, family death or things that are unavoidable negative aspects of life. Trauma = abuse, surviving a traumatic event such as an attack or being in a horrifically violent environment. Negative events are very much a part of life and unavoidable, trauma isnt something I would wish on anyone and no one ever deserves it. It's also incredibly individual. Something that is traumatic for one person, may be something normal for someone else. And sometimes trauma buries itself inside a person and it never gets dealt with but comes out in other ways.

I think it would be easier to print out the text you want and cut it out and glue it down or put it behind your page and trace it with an lightbox or your window or when the paper is to thick cover the backside of the printed text with graphite or use transfer paper and put it on top of your page and go over the lines of the letters way less time consuming :D
@MercurialMilk
@MercurialMilk 4 года назад
all good suggestions and I've tried most of them. cutting the letters is really hard on your hands and the precision can be really hard to do. It's almost the same amount of effort as my current way. The lightbox idea is pretty good but I tend to do white lettering on dark backgrounds a lot. and I havent tried transferring before, I may need to investigate that! Thanks!!

Thank you so much!! I've encountered hand lettering a lot on social media and I love the look of it... but it's not really for me. Mainly because I prefer something more type-font. This is mainly due to legibility. I've seen some gorgeous hand lettering but I find it's harder to read - although this may be a dyslexic trait of mine!!

It's not saying that trauma is a good thing - it's saying that you can make a good thing come out of something bad. So you can turn the bad thing into good if you allow it to make you stronger or more compassionate etc. The bad trauma has happened anyway, you can't change that, but you can turn it for good. That does not mean you are justifying trauma. And nobody said that things like strength and compassion don't come from good things. They do - they come from love. A loved child will grow to have strength and compassion. But bad things happen, too. So why not make good come of it rather than leave it as just pain and grief ?

I have so many art materials and keep on buying them which isn’t really helpful for my budget.

Same! That's why I made a pledge to try and use so much of it up! It's been really helpful in experimenting more with art and also realizing what I love using and what was not the best investment for me. I highly recommend making a personal challenge to try and use some if it up! xx

I know this vid is from two years ago. But speaking about the trauma comment, I don't think people are saying the trauma was a good thing, but they are looking for a reason why it happened. A justification. Why do bad things happen to good people especially when we have a compassionate god supposedly? Or you don't know what good is unless there is bad. Or you don't appreciate the good unless there is something bad. It still sucks that trauma exists but if you're looking for a way to cope, to understand, you look for what good may have come out of it. A lot people justify the bad things that happen in their life by saying everything happens for a reason. I grew up in a single parent home, was pretty much emotionally abused by my father or just plain neglected whenever he was in the picture. I spent my entire childhood wishing he was in my life and that I had a "normal" family. But as an adult, I think my life would have been hell if my parents had stayed together. I think I was better off without him there and instead being raised by a loving, compassionate mother and two incredibly caring and giving grandparents. So in my case the answer is it wound up being the lesser of two evils.
