Do you try different sizes and styles of sketchbook or do you stick to just one? I used to only use one size but have been expanding and it's wild to see how my style changes because of that.
yep, even as a beginner I tried different sizes & for me very personal, when it gets close to A6, let alone smaller, it's too hard to work with dued to my bad eye sight. It's just too small for me to enjoy it. At the very first, I've got A4 & bigger but surprisingly to me, the most pleasure I've got with around A5. Am not really sure, why. Away from this, I'm still obsessed with the idea, to use one book for all my art, trials & errors. & since you recommended this certain Canson book, I'll use it with pleasure (but well, it's just a couple of days, isn't it) But still watch out, if I could get a payable S&B. That's why II pest you with another sketchbook question. I can't believe I do, but here I am... I also watched your book tours, of course I did! & on my research for S&B I noted that their Nova only has got 150gms, or am I wrong? The reason I ask is, that I'm surprised it took your wet media so good. Sure I know, Zeta is heavier but I'm longing for the toned paper Nova has.
As a professional sketchbook hoarder, I will have and use every format and style although I am developing likings for particular brands such as khadi and etchr.
how professional and unique artpieces!!! Love them all! Still havent use the sketchbook you give me for the giveaway, i must get started, and now im really inspired, thanks!
you are wonderful with your art... I just wonder, how you write down these sayings, it is inspiring to read them from others (you here) but I could not look at the world and write this down for myself, I wish I could do it.. it is like looking at oneself form outside, it seems very helpful and joyful. thanks for sharing it. :-) ( I also use different sizes at the same time...)
Thank you so much!! I guess I am really introspective so I spend a lot of time thinking and writing. I think it's useful to make it a habit really. I used to write down conversations I overhear in my phone notes all the time and then when I had time to think about it, I would write about it in my journals. I think it comes with practice, much like anything!! xx
I don't know why people feel the need to label the type of book they use. When I was at art college, mid 90s, the tutors called our books "workbooks" and they were kind of the idea incubator full of experiments. Then when I did my degree the tutors called them sketchbooks, they would be so cross with me as there was such a mish mash of idea, experiments, writing, cinema tickets stuck in and some finished beautiful pages. They wanted everything defined. Now I've filled over 300 books and I don't give a monkeys what people call them, they are just my books. I fill them with what I like and if people don't like it, they can scroll on by. Just be yourself and do what you want in whatever book you want. As long as you love your books it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.
completely agree! In all honesty, I want to call them sketchbooks because that's the term I prefer but I find it leads to lower engagement with my work as well as weird passive aggressive comments from some.
Thank you so much! I've thought about doing a video on that but there are already SO many videos on it that I felt a bit silly making something that was already well covered. In fact, I learned a lot of what I do from YT myself, so if you're interested in book binding, check out a channel called SeaLemon. I also did a super fast photo tutorial on my blog too: mercurialmilk.tumblr.com/post/185753752431/its-been-so-long-since-ive-done-any-journaling That is for super fast little notebooks like the green with white flowers one I showed in this video. But I'll see if a bookbinding video could be made in the future as well! Maybe some of the 'hacks' I've learned could be helpful to people! Thanks again!
@@MercurialMilk Thank you so much for your long answer, I will check out the other video and your blog for sure!😘 You really are an inspiration to me to create more art again!
any magazine works, really. you just have to find some with font that's big enough to read. you can also print out quotes you like and that way you have control over the size and font.
I buy them (the stillman and birn sketchbooks) locally from a canadian art store chain called Opus Art Supplies. You can go on their website and see where they are sold - they have a worldwide distribution range so there might be a location near you that stocks them!
