I just want to call myself out here for a second since I don’t want to see anybody asking why a part of the video is blurred: My immature brain somehow came to the conclusion that it was okay to use other people’s characters as examples without their permission. AND for one of the worst parts of the video in my opinion. I could’ve very easily just used my own characters for that example to show you the real limits of that description text box. I’ve already reached out and apologized to the people featured here and have respected their choices, I cannot believe it’s taken me this long to do that. Don’t be like me.
TIP: if you know someone’s username on the site and want to see them specifically- if you go to your profile, click the web url, delete your user on the url and put the name of the person you’re searching for their page will pop up
also another thing!! you do NOT need to have the best art skills ever to participate!! everyone is welcome no matter your skill level, and most people simply love being attacked by anybody >3
notes for new artfighters: 1. You don't have to revenge if you can't or don't want to, it is generally a nice thing to do but not necessary, so don't worry if you get burnt out midway and can't return the attacks. If you want to though, you can always do it next year or during the off season! 2. Archived vs Hidden: Both of these make it so that players can't see the character on the page, but they have different functions (this was super confusing to me the first time lmao) - archived characters: You can only have 100 characters on your page, so archiving them gets rid of all the info + images on the character profile but keeps the name and filters (other users can still see the page if it was linked in an attack) - hidden characters: The character is hidden from your page and no one can see it except for you (The character still counts to your 100 char limit, but images + information is still preserved on the character's page) 3. LISTEN TO THE VIDEO!! JOIN THE DISCORD!! You don't even need to be active or anything, but that is where most of the announcements are made, as well as site status updates. You can ask mods about attacks and how they should be categorized during artfight, and there are minigames during the off season + you can talk to other artfighters if you want to in general chats + show off your art in the art channels. 4. Don't stress about the quality of your attacks too much, there are options for even sketches and rough colors to be submitted, and most people appreciate any art they get 5. Some people do equal attacks which is when they will revenge your attack with the type/amount of effort put into it (e.g. full body for full body, sketch for sketch, etc) 6. Mass attacks can only be directed to one person but can have OCs belonging to multiple people. Also if I'm not wrong, the person who sees the private description is the person who is the main receiver of the attack (ie who you put in the "to:" part of your submission), not necessarily the owner of the first character you list happy artfight!
I want to start artfight, but tbh the character creation part is stressing me out bc i'm not that good at drawing fullbodies for references. Would it be fine to just draw a halfbody/bust and describe the rest in the description?
@@Someone-km3mx pretty sure that would be perfectly fine! (the fullbodies make it harder for people to get details wrong, but describing specific things about the character work just as well) Also if you have art of your character from other people, you could also use that as a reference image too (there are options for crediting people on site and off site) :D
Sooo, I am supposed to draw a fight scene including my oponent's oc fighting my oc or is it about "out-arting" the competition by drawing their oc better than they can draw your's?
@@krsmanjovanovic8607The competitive aspects are less on who draws better or worse between two people, and more on how many points an individual can contribute to a team. It's just an incentive for artists to participate in trading art. You draw whatever you and the target wants! (ie I draw someone's sona reading a book and they 'attack' back with my sona out on a stroll)

About team switching: I have barely participated but I remember this from 2023. There's a limit of how much you can switch teams, but this has a workaround. You should keep an eye on the event long before it starts (maybe like a week) and they'll let you pick any team you want before it begins. This is to reduce site traffic on opening day and a great opportunity to avoid the stress of having to switch if you don't like the team you're assigned
Uhh I might be worrying too much about this but I wanted to clarify some stuff: The part where I talk about character descriptions, DON'T take it too seriously. The examples I showed aren't even what I would consider an overwhelmingly long description. I'm scared that I may not have worded it in the best way(again, bad script). Also(according to comments) there is a search function! It's just for donors, but someone said that if you know someone's username you can just replace the name part of your url with theirs. this is a really nice video! Ive been doing artfight since 2018 and this covers it all very well- one thing for anyone reding this, know that the website is always (as tradition dictates) going to be incredibly glitchy to use for the first week or so due to overload. Saving a few references before the artfight actually starts is a good way to make sure you actually get to play! also love your little avatar :) EDIT: Also, whats your artfight user? i love how expressive and experimental you can be in artfight! there's limitless ocs you can draw including humans, anthros, objects etc, and i find it really good for practising drawing things you haven't before. and best of all, you're making art for someone else!

I participated in artfight last year and had a rough start figuring out all the basics and other things on the website.. but if I had this video back then it would have been a breeze haha! As artfight approaches, I definitely think this was a good refresher for me! Thank you so much for making this video
honestly i had that too earlier this month. but i find that artfight is the one time of the year where my art block doesn't show up, just because of how many characters and ideas i have for drawing. and the playfulness + encouraging aspect of the event really helps with getting out of a funk! i def recommend even doing one attack during artfight because it'll likely lead to another, and then more personal art in the future.
This is such a great video! I'm definitely sending this to friends I want to recruit for Artfight. Also, you mentioning the Artfight themes reminds me of something I've been doing. For these last few years, I like to make a new outfit for my fursona based on the team I join. I've been doing this since Steampunk vs. Cyberpunk (I have been around since Sugar vs. Spice) It's a really fun way to incorporate the theme into my characters even if they don't directly correlate with the theme. I would love to hear about what other people do and if they do anything similar.

this is a very good guide for those who may be new to artfight !! I wanted to note a couple of things, although it's understandable that you couldn't include them since they're attack based: Firstly, your attack can only target one user - while your attack can include ocs from many people on either or both teams, you can only target it at one person! n secondly, from what I remember, there is a 100 character cap on attacks, for anyone who wants to go a little silly crazy and draw a bunch of ocs. I don't know if youd be able to contact the mods to add more, or something, but 100 is a biiiiig number so I don't expect most users to be hitting it, haha.
5:20 you can get more username changes by donating to the website, and every year you get a free one on january 1st, although i think this was implemented only a year or two ago (have 3, been on the site since 2018, haven't changed before). you also have a free username change when you first sign up

This is the first time that I heard about art fight since one of my friends just told me that they joined it so I searched on RU-vid after they told me about it to get some more info about it
No becuz this tutorial is so good, I found out how to adjust a lot of things on art fight but I feel like this tutorial will be amazing for new participants this year
some extra stuff i felt like adding as someone whos been doing this for 5 years: -you get a free username change every jan 1st, and can get an additional one for every $2 donated -there are early bird team sign ups that happen a few days to a week before the event starts. this is for people who have a specific team they want to be sure they're on, because when it starts everyone who joins the event gets assigned to a random team. you can switch sides if you want as mentioned in this video, though you won't get the "[team] loyalty" achievement (and i think it gets replaced by a "traitor" one?) if you care about those -achievements. theyre a thing. you can find these under the "statistics" page on your profile below all the actual statistics. there are a few for how many attacks you've submitted, some shoutout type ones, and team achievements -there's a news post at the end of every event with featured attacks, site statistics (how many attacks were submitted, user growth, etc) just some cool trivia & you may even appear ooh 15 seconds of fame -there is not a public list for all the people YOU follow. you can see this in your settings, but others cant -after you donate x amount of money you gain the ability to edit your profile's css, this will be visible to everyone who visits your profile but there is an option to hide the theme which i almost always do because they give me a headache. this is in a dropdown menu next to the follow, pm, and report buttons at the top of profiles -hidden characters weren't gone into much detail so uhhhh Hidden characters are characters that.. are hidden... from your profile. people can't attack them or view them. they still count towards your active character total though. you can have up to 100 active characters at a time (i advise against having that many though because similar to how having an overdetailed character description or permissions it can get overwhelming for others pretty quick, decision paralysis) -archiving characters removes them from your active character total and cleans most of their profile outside of attacks (the profile can also be accessed through direct links, ie. attack info). its recommended to archive characters instead of deleting them, i think you can un-archive a character later? if you delete a character theyre gone forever. their url is destroyed, their profiles cant be commented on, if you want that character back youll have to make a new profile for them and none of the attacks they got previously will transfer over. generally dont delete bc artfight literally gives you all the tools to keep your characters while retaining control over if people can see/interact with them or not -if you are submitting a revenge on someone and want it to actually register that it is a revenge and not just a normal attack you have to actually include this when submitting the attack, it doesn't automatically do it. iirc there is a category with all the other attack info that, when the user/id of the person being revenged is inputted, will scan for attacks they have done towards You and if it finds one you'll have the option to link it so the revenge is counted as a revenge. i'm explaining this badly. it's pretty easy to figure out when you actually do it (but i forget to add revenge a lot and will have to resubmit attacks OTL) -PROTIP: you can access the attack categorization and maturity guides at any time through the "help" dropdown menu at the top of the ui. i always forget this exists -PROTIP 2: artfight is NOTORIOUS for going down at the beginning of the event every year without fail its like a tradition at this point. so, id recommend posting reference images & maybe IDs of characters you intend to attack elsewhere (eg. discord, personal social media, imgur, whatever) so you can continue to draw them even when the site is down or ridiculously slow. -i believe you can join artfight at any time, or at least join the event at any time. you dont have to join before the event starts (thats not even possible outside of the early bird sign up windows) and you aren't barred from joining after it starts either. you can join july 31st. hell you can join it august 1 and still probably get an attack or 2 in. it's pretty accessible. -for my fellow anxiety havers dont worry about the quality of your attacks or being good enough. dont worry about coming off as weird for attacking someone you dont know. dont feel obligated to revenge someone who attacked you. this game is about GIVING, not getting or exchanging. 90% of the people ive attacked have been total strangers & for those whove commented they have always been very happy and thankful. the only thing you need to keep in mind when attacking someone is their permissions & boundaries. would you be happy to get art of your oc? EVERYONE would! thats why this event is so fun! -PROTIP 3: you can go to someones profile by typing in the url artfight.net/~(username). the profile urls are always just a tilde and then the user, so if you know someones user you can just type in the url and get there instead of finding a hyperlink -the tagging system, while new and a little janky is very useful for finding characters you want to draw. use it! dont wait for people to attack you first! especially if you havent put any tags on your characters and dont have like 10k on some other social media where you plugged your artfight profile -i kinda disagree with a point made in the video that was that you shouldnt repeat information on a reference sheet in the characters description. you dont NEED to, dont feel obligated to repeat walls of text on a ref (i wouldnt do that anyway), but especially if you have handwritten notes or used a kind of hard to read font/text color, it's good to type out that info for people who use screen readers or just cant read your handwriting -you can upload custom thumbnails as was mentioned in the video, & you can do this for attacks too! if your old art is embarrassing to you you can hide it with a custom thumbnail. lots of people do this thats all i can think of for now LOL

I always try to include everything important in descriptions but always end up writing a lot (mostly for profile and permissios) I can't narrow it down more no matter how much I try ;-; I really hope people don't skip me cuz of it.. I usually just copy the images for reference and lower the opacity. Idk why you'd keep scrolling on the character page, I guess if you don't memorize and know what you want to draw the character doing? Idk that's the weirdest part of the video pff, on 4th year now hehe can't wait 12:00 also you get a search option for users or something like that if you become a supporter or something like that

extra thing: playing without having characters is totally allowed and okay (according to multiple moderators on the discord) i got hung up on it because i didn't have any characters i cared enough about (and because people were telling me that it's supposedly bad)

I may have just found your channel but I absolutely subscribing and excited to see your videos, this videos very helpful, I joined art fight like 3 years ago and I was sooo lost and learned as I went along and it’s actually really hard to keep track of the book marks so I use external VizRef on my iPad or photos on my phone to keep them organized, I found out about art fight from Olivecow videos and was amazed by how many artist drew for art fight and it’s not going to mean you get revenge art it’ll take time and reputation just having fun and knowing it takes time ot actually draw them , and time to upload. (Pardon the paragraph I just get excited about art fight)
ah I wish I could join artfight this year, I'm trying to stay focussed on my own stuff this summer so I'll def look back at this tutorial next year :))

idk if anyone has said this yet but usernames can be changed multiple times provided you have allowances! you start with one and get another january 1st, and can get more by making donations. it's all laid out in the information box above it
