This is the more interesting part of the process to me. Like... okay, so if this is the whole story, why can't you crack your knuckles *indefinitely* by creating negative pressure, generating and collapsing a cavitation bubble? Also, if this is the case, and there's no precursor event, why does every knuckle cracker know when they can crack their knuckles?

When cracking your fingers, toes, shoulders, elbows, back, or neck, the sense of relief is achieved when that tension is released. The joint feels relaxed again, which helps to alleviate stress in the body.👍

Hi! Classical musician with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome here, a condition that affects joints and often makes patients like me crackle a LOT, in joints all over the body, without trying to! I get told it's rude for me to crack my joints in public, when due to my condition, I'm actually in a lot of pain if I DON'T crack them. People try to explain to me all the time, "Oh, that's so bad for you!" and I keep having to tell them, "No, it's not! The science says it doesn't do any damage, and I'm in pain that gets relieved (to an extent) when this joint pops!" So thanks for making this video - I'll be linking it next time anyone tries to tell me what they think I should and shouldn't be doing with my chronically ill body!

I tend to believe they do based on my own personal experience after dislocating my left shoulder. 30 days after the incident, it constantly felt like someone punched my arm and I was unable to extend it past the midpoint. Was scheduled for lengthy PT, but decided to talk with a chiropractor who moved the humerus back up (almost passed out) and regained full range of motion within 10 days.
@JP13795
@JP13795 3 года назад
All depends on the chiropractor. Gonstead chiropractors tend to be the best though. Like any profession there's a large number of mediocre people, a few really good ones, and then a bunch of bad ones as well. However we tend to pay most attention to the really bad ones and make a judgment based on those ones, even more so if you are biased against it. Dr. Ian and Dr. Rahim are two incredible Gonstead Chiros worth checking out. A few of the biggest distinguishing factors between good and bad practioners is methodology, as well as the understanding of basic principles and foundations (which can really translate to any profession).
@JP13795
@JP13795 3 года назад
@@seattlesix9953 sounds like a sublux. Not surprised a chiro fixed it. I had 2 dislocations. On my second one after I woke up from the drugs, I knew it was still out, told the doctors and they stood there and laughed at me and told me it was the drugs talking, sent me for another X-Ray and when they got it back they realized how wrong they were (which probably hurts as a doctor, especially when your patient is drugged up). Also to add to their pain, that dislocation wasn't even bad and shoulder reductions are quite simple.

I love how a few years of schooling makes someone think they know the 'science' behind everything in medicine, and even how that process works. Most physicians I knew growing up said it was bad for you, but I also learned as I got older that half of all doctors finished in the bottom half of their class.

Greatly appreciate the nuanced explanation about how science is a process in this video! Some people see two conflicting theories and think A is newer so B is wrong and dumb, when in reality the work of one often *leads* to another, and sometimes we come back to old theories when the data suggests. Science isn't a fight, it's everybody trying to figure out the answer together.

This is kinda scary. Yesterday a Dutch vlogger was discussing whether it was bad or not. They came to the conclusion it wasn’t bad, but it’s always better to not do it. Now hearing it from an actual doctor I do feel better about my “habit” of cracking my knuckles.

I crack every joint on each finger by bending it to the side and crack them again my pressing down on them then open my finger straight out and my a fist slowly while stiffening them to crack again like three to four times a day for the past 16 years. I always thought something was wrong, now I can rest easy after seeing your video. Thank you.

I once worked at a company that held an annual Useless Talent Show, where people would show off the crazy things they could do. One woman's talent was being able to crack every joint in her body, including her spine. You should have seen the looks of horror on the people in the audience as she demonstrated this.

There's something addicting about cracking your knuckles, once you do it once, you can't just not do it ever again. Maybe that psychological effect would be a fun thing to research.

I would love for you to go farther into this. For myself and my father we have this thing where everything cracks. When we walk around our knees or toes or whatever crack all the time simply walking around. If I get a big, arms over my head, stretch things like my sternum will crack or my collar bones crack at my shoulders. We can never sneak around lol. My wife always laughs at me cause she says she always knows when we are coming. I wonder what something like this says about a person or their long term health or if it is something that can be treated or simply a weird quirk. Love your videos I would LOVE to know more about this sort of thing.

It would be interesting if you could do a video on Reynaud’s Disease. I have suffered with this most of my life and haven’t had much medical support. Docs say I just have to live with it. My city doesn’t have a Rheumatologist and my doctor doesn’t think it would be beneficial to see one.

For me personally, I HAVE to crack my knuckles, neck, toes, etc because they cause pain and even cause their corresponding body parts to lock up and not move. I even have some days where my neck down to my fingers locks up and it can only be relieved by cracking a certain finger on the hand that is affected. A good question that I've never come across an answer for is, "Are there things that can cause a building up of gases, or other things, in the joints that make them need to be cracked?" I know that may seem odd.. But I swear a short while after drinking a carbonated soda, I seem to need to crack things more frequently.. Thanks for an awesome video!

I crack my knuckles, back, neck, toes, and even the arches of my feet! I used to be able to crack each side of my jaw, several times per day, but now I can only do it on rare occasions. My sister can crack her hips! It looks so funny when she does it, as she will jerk her knee upwards and towards the opposite side of her body, but it makes a really, really loud and deep cracking/popping noise! I've never been able to do that one "on command," but, like my knees, my hip joints will occasionally crack on their own, when I least expect them to! My sis and I used to have contests on who could pop the most joints!
