The Home Depot co-founder, Arthur Blank, candidly shares details of an impromptu meeting in an airport hangar when he was asked to step down, the company’s short-term mistake of replacing him with Robert Nardelli and how the brand righted its wrongs and returned to a values-based business culture.

You are spot on Arthur! After my real career as a CFO, I needed something to do, so I went to work at my local HD store which was the one at Merchants Walk in Atlanta. As a customer and as an ex-associate, Nardelli was a disaster. Associates were very thinly staffed, and morale was low not only among associates, but also store management. When Nardelli would visit it was as if the President of the US was visiting.......multiple limos, trailing sycophants on their Blackberries, the hubris was palpable. Then, mercifully, Nardelli was gone and Frank took over. Soon things improved. More aprons were on the floor, inventory was there when and where we needed it. Associate knowledge increased through better hiring practices and training. One day I noticed a man walking the aisles alone in what I recognized as a suit but without the coat. His white shirtsleeves were rolled up. It turned out to be Frank Blake......no limos, no entourage. He truly wanted to visit almost incognito to see and feel what was really going on in a store. What a difference! Good for him! Great for Home Depot!

Home Depot’s service and management systems are a joke. I remember laughing at a Specialty Sales manager when he mentioned HD’s plans to compete with Amazon regarding online retail and services. Everything from third part service providers to courier contracts boil down to who is the lowest bidder. Home Depot has a Harbor Freight business model; buy cheap and sell at a high markup.

I had business with them as a new vendor . I made my pitch , got set up ( a real big win for my career and my company) . At my follow up appointment, I’m told the buyer I saw was escorted out of the Atlanta office by security! They changed and treated people like soiled underwear !

I help in all departments? What a joke. 95% of the upper management don't even know what item a department is in or how to use it. 80% of those promoted to DH know just as little.

This isn't about Arthur at all. They are losing control of quality management and are unable to recognize that the better healed you are in education doesn't translate to good management. As a trouble shooter for two Fortune 500 Companies in the past I can tell you most all companies can improve their operational effectiveness. The major problem is Companies preach customer service but rarely are able to deliver it consistently. The one Exception is Chick-fil-A. Why Lack of training Lack of hiring the right associates for each job task. Lack of consistent communication not only with the customer but with the associates. Sending out Memo's doesn't feed the Bull Dog when you have so many people with bad people skills. I could go on for hours but competition is coming in many ways. You hire people that already care because you truly can't teach that!

@@davidbrown7213 i’d argue its a lack of appreciation or lost appreciation for soft skills that’s instilled widespread across all of the company from the previous ownership in most of the cases where customer service is thought of as tremendous and falls off. HD, imo, did a phenomenal job of that under blank.

If you work at Home Depot go find a better job. This is unless you work in corporate management and you're like a director or some shit

Mitchell Mitchell I use to work at home depot. I got fired for some bullshit 4 years ago. I dont drink the koolaid kills and think its the best place the work. Believe me. It's not. They will constantly send you home early just to avoid paying you overtime, but would be so quick to call you into work on your day off.

I used to work at Lowe's and what I enjoyed about them was that you got a 10% discount as an employee !Home Depot doesn't do that they really do not value their employees as much!!
@danniblaire4702
@danniblaire4702 2 года назад
we legit get part time benefits? i’d prefer that over 10% off any day. besides, i’d say medical benefits show they value their employees more than if they gave us some measly discount that won’t even cover taxes lol (edited for spelling)

What ever "values" Arthur Blank is talking about, I don't see them today at Home Depot. Years ago, Home Depot hired a lot of trades people, and hardware store veterans and they were knowledable and helpful - but today at home depot - you're on your own.

Thank you Authors... Reality They always mess with the good ones and they got The wrong team as a management at how they lose money with the employees no service means no business. Self and demand that's how I learned it. Those type of people don't believe in ther logic when it comes to working together.

I used to live in Atlanta, GA and came to love Home Depot as my number one store for all purchases. It wasn't until I had moved back to Texas that I learned of there anti-gun stances against the 1st Amendment. I haven't been to a Home Depot since and am PROUDLY a Lowe's customer now. The bad part of all this is that Arthur seems like's he's a stand up guy, IMO.

Here’s some advice Arthur, next time you speak with the Liberal Management suggest they stay out of the Political Culture War!! We don’t care who or what you sleep with in your bed!!! This is why LOWES is kicking your butts in growth!!! We stopped shopping at HD when they held their first GAY PARADE!!!! My point is concentrate on sales not Human Anatomy!!!!
