Where a man with good intentions is immediately seen as a threat because of what we hear happen in the rest of our society. If a man broke into your deep wood cottage in the middle of the night, you'd wait for him with a gun or a baseball bat because the automatic assumption is that the person is malicious . It's completely possible however that he might have just gotten lost in the wild for weeks and yours is the first house he ended up finding. Instead of treating Arthur like a leprous freak, he could have been nice to him while keeping Bruce away from him. But since he's a stranger, he is automatically treated with contempt. Something else that I haven’t heard anyone talk about is their outfits. Arthur is wearing a cheap brown hoodie and a wrinkled button up shirt, while Bruce has a nice white turtleneck and a nice brown overcoat. Really highlights how similar yet disconnected they are.

This film takes place in a universe completely separate to ones we've seen, everywhere else Joker's name is not Aurther Fleck. Like how in Batman '89 his name was Jack Napier. In main comic continuity I think Joker's name was revealed but I'm not sure. In Batman The Animated Series it was said his name was Jack Napier but I think was revealed to be a false identity.
