The issue is NOT that they scored, it's that they lined up in VIctory. There is a reason for VIctory, and that is to tell the other team that you will not be running a play, so we can all prevent injuries. If you use Victory as a fake play you are asking for trouble and it is a dirty move. They could have audible'd to another play to signal their intent to keep the game going.

Fire both coaches is my take. Arthur felt disrespected but was awful all year. Dennis Allen was disrespected this game by his play not being ran on the 1, but again, was awful all year by not gaining the respect of his locker room and underusing his very talented roster. Williams was underused so the offense felt it was their time to give him something to at least say he didn’t waste a season on. Everyone was right and wrong at the same time. Fire both coaches and move on tbh, they suck lmaoo

It’s more because of his role on the saints compared to the lions. He got way more carries on the lions last season than he did this season. His role with the lions was also goaline RB which explained almost all of his TDs last season. Let’s not forget how many times swift or someone else set him up to come in for a 1yd rushing TD. In general I'm against "don't score" unwritten rules because the team that is losing is still trying to score. But I do think it is bad to abuse victory formation in this manner. If something is explicitly written into the rules to prematurely end a play a la knees, QB sliding, and spikes, I don't think they should be allowed to be faked.

What this does is gives defenses a reason go all out and possibly hurt someone who has lined up in a known formation that signals they are taking a knee to run the clock out. Then when someone gets seriously injured, they can say “You saw what the Saints did. Not falling for that trick.”

I'm a Falcons fan (pain) and I'll say this: this adds more fuel to the rivalry, which I think is fun, personally, but taken too far by some. I want to enjoy football and trash talk. I don't want to be enemies. Haha. But I see both sides of it. I'd be mad if I was a player or coach for the Falcons. You're winning by so much, why fake a TD? To make it easier for your guy? We can get injured by not knowing, which was mentioned. If I were the Saints coach I'd be upset because that was a "dirty" (faking a knee up by that much with so little time left) play and they disobeyed you. You have to know your players are going to follow your direction as a coach. I'd celebrate the success of our boy but they'd all be running more in drills for sure. Lol For the Saints players, I get it. You want to have a victory for your boy. You should celebrate not only the victory for your boy but the win of the game as well. Maybe not the best way to go about it, but it's done already. Celebrate, pay the consequences (probably more drills), and move on and try to do better than that. I'd just say don't do plays you wouldn't want run against you. Trick plays, or plays like this when it's the game on the line or a really close game are one thing, but it just seems really poor sportsmanship. If anyone disagrees, I respect your opinion. I'm not gonna be getting into it with anyone. I'm here to love the game and have comradery with fellow fans of sports and JomBoy!

It puts players in a vulnerable position where they are no longer safe using victory formation. It's equivalent to a fake glove tap in boxing; it's cheap, dangerous, and unsportsmanlike. Few years ago the Seahawks wanted to get David Moore (#3 WR) an extra reception for an incentive bonus at the end of the game. And I'm pretty sure Russell Wilson went to someone on the defense (49ers) and said 'hey we're just gonna throw this guy a little touch pass behind the line and he's gonna go down' - and that's exactly what they did. They came out in a normal formation, said exactly what they were gonna do and did it. I dunno if Jameis or the Saints said anything to the Falcons but to me you shouldn't be in victory formation *when the game is out of reach* if you're gonna run at them like that - because victory formation is both teams saying 'the game is over' and it breaks that unspoken agreement. There was that instance at the end of regulation in SB 51 (the 28-3 game) where the Patriots had it tied up and the Falcons punted the ball back to them. They ran a fake out of victory formation and got a decent amount of yards - didn't score though. To me that's fine. But yeah, I don't have a hat in the ring of the NFC South, but I'd be mad if someone did to me what the Saints did in that situation. So.

As an Australian I find it so weird that there are these hidden rules of ethics in American sports, because of Jomboy I have seen it happen in Baseball, NBA and NFL. In Australia if there is that big a gap of skill, you get dominated, take the loss and get humiliated. I could never imagine a game of AFL, Rugby or NBL etc. where an opposing team starts to coddle the other team, if you loose by 100 points you get laughed at as you come off the field/court and the winners celebrate even harder.

its the injury factor in this point, its a ceremonial play where the offense immediately kills their own play. the defense will do nothing, but if the offensive players are going full steam against a defense that is expecting no contact, an injury can easily happen. its kind of like pretending to help someone up after they fall…

100% agree with you. Running a 1 yard play to score out of the victory formation in the final seconds of the game is a chicken shit way to score. What are you proving by scoring against a defense that is expecting you to take a knee. Nothing at all. Such a hollow gesture, despite its well intentioned motivations for Jamaal Williams. I wouldn't have had a problem with their choice to go for the touchdown out of a typical offensive formation (pistol, deep I, trips, etc), but doing it out of the V formation feels so cheap and underhanded.

On one hand, I think it's great that the Saints coach came out and said that. Shows strong moral character and commitment to sportsmanship. On the other hand it's kind of wild that he came out and buried his team in public. He could definitely have ripped them one later, in private, but at the press conference I think he maybe should have evaded the question or just said there was a miscommunication, or that he appreciates the competitive spirit of the players or something. Unless they were all just second string guys who he doesn't care about, or something.

@realpillboxer

Exactly what I said in a comment elsewhere. Saints coach had plenty of time between the TD and the presser to formulate some spin and back up his players while agreeing it was not the sporting thing to do. Instead, he comes out wearing a visor like he's in Len's "Steal My Sunshine" music video from 1997 and decides to chuck his players under the bus. Please tell me this clown isn't coming back to NO next year.
@proteuswest1084
@proteuswest1084 8 месяцев назад
@@realpillboxer His players chucked him under the bus. He was the one who got yelled at after the game, he was the one who everyone thought was a classless jerk. At the end of the day, a coach is evaluated on the decisions he makes for the team, so when the team doesn't follow your decisions, that reflects poorly on you because people assume you made that decision, and when they find out they just did it against your wishes, then it reflects poorly on you because people assume you lost the team. Why should anyone with any self respect back what the players did? It was dangerous, it was unsporting, and it went against what the coach stood for. If you can imagine any successful coach in the history of the NFL coming up to a podium and backing his players up after this, then you haven't been paying attention. If Jameis ever gets another job in the NFL, the team that signs him should be investigated. He hasn't been good enough to justify this type of behavior in a LONG time.

If the NFL can make a rule that QBs are down once a slide is initiated, they can create a rule that if a team is on victory formation, the ball cannot be advanced past the line of scrimmage. The team doing this absolutely puts players at rick of being injured.

Most of us saints fans that I’ve interacted with this season want DA fired. The players shouldn’t have defied his play and run it in under v formation and DA should have just let them run two plays and given a polite explanation that they did it for Jamal and but as a snub. I hope this makes the front office rethink giving DA a third season, he’s lost the locker room at this point and I’m not sure how he gets it back.

Yeah, this type of season was the worst thing that could have happened. We squeaked out a winning season against a garbage-tier schedule, but still missed the playoffs. So we won’t make any major changes and we won’t have a good draft pick for the future of the team, all while being in cap hell. It would have been better for us to bomb at 5-12 and do a full rebuild. The Saints will never achieve anything under Dennis Allen. He just seems like a loser the players have no respect for. But we won’t fire him or Pete Carmichael for going 9-8.
